r Great Question! This feature takes the content of each Study Tip in the Fifth
Edition and presents it in the context of a student question. Answers to questions
offer suggestions for problem solving, point out common errors to avoid, and provide
informal hints and suggestions. Great Question! should draw students attention
and curiosity more than the Study Tips. As a secondary benefit, this new feature
should help students not to feel anxious or threatened when asking questions in class.
r Achieving Success. The books Achieving Success boxes offer strategies for
success in math courses, as well as suggestions for developmental students on
achieving ones full academic potential.
r New Chapter-Opening and Section-Opening Scenarios. Every chapter and every
section open with a scenario based on an application, many of which are unique
to the Sixth Edition. These scenarios are revisited in the course of the chapter
or section in one of the books new examples, exercises, or discussions. The
often-humorous tone of these openers is intended to help fearful and reluctant
students overcome their negative perceptions about math.
r New The Lecture Series on DVD has been completely revised to provide students
with extra help for each section of the textbook. The Lecture Series DVD includes:
r Interactive Lectures that highlight key examples and exercises for every section
of the textbook. A new interface allows easy navigation to sections, objectives,
and examples.
r Chapter Test Prep Videos provide step-by-step solutions to every problem in
each Chapter Test in the textbook. The Chapter Test Prep Videos are now also
available on YouTube.

What Content and Organizational Changes Have Been

Made to the Sixth Edition?
r Section 2.3 (Solving Linear Equations) contains a new discussion on solving linear
equations with decimals.
r Section 2.4 (Formulas and Percents) speeds up the discussion on basics of percent,
a prealgebra topic, with the focus on algebraic applications.
r Section 2.7 (Solving Linear Inequalities) includes an additional application involving
an example about staying within a budget.
r Chapter 3 (Problem Solving) from the Fifth Edition incorporates its topics
throughout the book, particularly so that students do not feel overwhelmed by
problem solving so close to the beginning of the course. Problems involving simple
interest and mixtures are now discussed in Section 4.4 (Problem Solving Using
Systems of Equations). Proportions and motion problems are now included in
Section 7.7 (Applications Using Rational Equations and Proportions). Problem
solving in geometry now appears in Section 2.6.
r Section 4.4 (Problem Solving Using Systems of Equations) contains a greater
selection of applications, including simple interest problems and mixture problems.
r Section 6.1 (The Greatest Common Factor and Factoring by Grouping) includes a
new objective on factoring out the negative of a polynomials greatest common factor.
r Section 6.5 (A General Factoring Strategy) slows down the pace of the Practice
Exercises in the Exercise Set. The Exercise Set now opens with problems
that require students to use only one factoring technique before moving on to
multiple-step factorizations.

What Familiar Features Have Been Retained

in the Sixth Edition?
r Detailed Worked-Out Examples. Each worked example is titled, making clear the
purpose of the example. Examples are clearly written and provide students with
detailed step-by-step solutions. No steps are omitted and key steps are thoroughly
explained to the right of the mathematics.
