MENINGITIS

Meningitis represents inflammation of brains protective membranes. This

inflammation is very dangerous because it infects vital parts of human organism. It is especially
dangerous if it infects children who are irresistible to it, and proper parental reaction is required.
Reporting to doctor immediately after noticing symptoms could be crucial to successive
recovering.

Meningitis is, more detailed, inflammation of brains membranes and liquid that
protects brain and spinal cord. It can be lethal. It attacts our organism very quickly, but can leave
long term consequences. Read what are main symptoms, how to protect against it, and how to
deal with it in case of infection. Meningitis comes in two forms, depending on cause of
infection, it could be virus caused or bacterial caused. Virus caused meningitis is more seasonal
type, so it mainly comes in early summer or early fall. In these periods it is highly recommended
to dry your hair completely before going out on open air. It is less dangerous than bacterial
meningitis, and it is not cured with antibiotic medicine. It is also very painful, but it doesnt
threat with long term brain damage. Bacterial meningitis is treated with antibiotics and vaccines,
but it can leave damage on brain tissue. Modern medicine constantly puts out new preventive
vaccines, in Bosnia it is still not necessary , and you are not obligated to do it, but you can ask to
get vaccine against it. For babies and small children main source of contamination is bacteria

Eccherichia coli. Patient experienced problems first time before two years, and that was the first
time when she reported to the doctor. First symptoms were hard headache and neck pain. Patient
was sixteen when she first reported to hospital. While talking with patient she told as that she is
highly sensitive to lights and sounds. Also one of first signs of this inflammation are
hyperthermia and vomiting. After taking all diagnostic information we are trying to reveal a
cause of this state. Most precise diagnostic method is puncture of spinal cord. Using this method
we can also get the samples of spinal liquor, that can tell us what is happening with the brain.
Patient remains hospitalized until the type of meningitis is determined, and appropriate therapy is
used. After diagnostic results came back, doctor explained patient her current state and methods
of therapy. The way that doctor used to explain everything to the patient was very good, and she
gave him her full trust. After dismissing from hospital patient was advised to recover a bit more,
and if she experiences any headaches, that is consequence of the disease. She was given some
advice on how to use given medicine. She was advised to avoid any kind of stress, watching
straight into direct light, or doing any kind of hard labour. Loss of hearing can be one of the
consequences.

Best diagnostic method for this problem puncture of spinal cord. Also very
reliable way of preventing meningitis is vaccination. It is very wise to dry hair properly before
going out on open air, as it was case with this patient. Having supportive family , nurses and
doctors is also very important. It is very important to give patients peaceful environment that is
very important for recovering.
Patient reported first time with the problems two years ago. Diagnose was done with use of
puncture of lumbal spinal cord. When type of meningitis was determined, correct therapy was
chosen, and patient was advised to do. She gained a full recovery with correct methods of
therapy and recovery. Long term problem could be loss of hearing, but hopefully with use of
correct methods, it will not come to that point.
