Spirent TestCenter 4.49 Software and Hardware Release Notes

Known Issues
Hardware
Problems that result in a major loss of chassis functionality or a system crash are listed below.

Common to all Chassis

It is important to follow proper environmental procedures when using any Spirent TestCenter chassis.
Please make sure that all empty slots are covered with slot covers ACC-2008B or ACC-2010A (for
the SPT-11U and SPT-3U chassis) or ACC-2022A (for the SPT-N11U and SPT-N4U chassis).

SPT-11U (and SPT-3U Chassis)

The power button in the front of the SPT-11U and SPT-3U chassis works a little differently than it
does on the SPT-9000A or SPT-2U. On the SPT-9000A or SPT-2U you simply press the button and
walk away. The chassis, after a short delay, starts to shut down. On the SPT-11U and SPT-3U you
must hold the button down for about 5 seconds waiting for the status LED to turn amber. Do not
release it until it turns red. Once it does you can release it and walk away. The chassis will
gracefully shut down. If you release it early the chassis will keep running normally.

SPT-N11U (and SPT-N4U Chassis)

The power button in the front of the SPT-N11U works differently than the power button on the
SPT-11U. On the SPT-N11U a simple push and release of the power button initiates a graceful
shutdown. If you need to force a shutdown you push the power button and hold it for five
seconds. Please note the difference because the procedure to gracefully shut down the SPT-11U
chassis will cause a forced shutdown of the SPT-N11U chassis.

On the control module is an Ethernet RJ-45 port labeled 1588. This port is only supported with
revision B chassis controllers.

NTP is only supported with revision B chassis controllers.

IPv6 is not supported on the controller hardware in this release.

When you initially power up the chassis the fans do not come on. This is normal. The fans are
not required to boot the system control module. Once the control module has booted the test
modules are turned on. At this time the fans are also turned on to cool them.

When creating a time synchronization chain involving multiple chassis you must first cable the
chassis together and then reboot the entire system. If you change the synchronization status of a
chassis (from master to slave for example) you must reboot the chassis.

When connecting chassis in a synch-chain, the time synchronization topology takes a long time to
be displayed in the Spirent TestCenter software.

Spirent TestCenter 4.49 Software and Hardware Release Notes

Spirent C1 and Other Appliances

Upgrading from release 4.39 or earlier to release 4.40 or later requires a system re-image. Once
the system is re-imaged, subsequent installs of 4.40 or later will not require a re-image.

GUI download feature from the C1 is not supported as it is on the chassis

10GE Spirent TestCenter control plane traffic is limited to frames of 4095 bytes or less in length.

C1 with NIC-33 does not consistently operate in half-duplex mode

CR #2179531351. Systems with NIC-33 (4x1G copper) can take upwards of 30 minutes to boot.
WAIT FOR THE SYSTEM TO COMPLETE THE BOOT PROCESS before power cycling or
unplugging the power. The boot time can be sped up by using a console to hit the carriage return
at the point the cursor is blinking.

CR #2179767971. The dual NIC C1-KIT-03-STC and C1-KIT-03-STC-ALL kits are Spirent
TestCenter only. These are shown as SPT-C1-7 in the GUI. APPLYING THE L4L7 TEST
PACKAGE TO THIS CONFIG WILL CORRUPT THE HARD DRIVE OF THE SYSTEM
AND REQUIRE RE-IMAGING TO RECOVER THE APPLIANCE.

FX2-40G-Qx, FX2-10G-Qx, MX2-40G-Qx, MX2-10G-Qx

CR #2169633025. Cards running in 10G per-port reservation mode may fail to synch with the
chassis backplane. Reboot the affected modules to regain synch.

MX-10G-SX

Replaying a large video file may result in a low memory issue and cause the port to go down.

DX2-40G-Q8, DX2-40GO-Q8, DX2-10G-Q8

A port may drop link under constant regression testing. The work around is to reboot the port.

CR #918976824. Some large stream count tests may result in stream counts that are off by 1
frame

DX2-40G-Q8, DX2-40GO-Q8, DX2-10G-Q8 rev. B

CR #967564262. Applying a new ppm value may cause a link flap and FCS errors.

Some large stream count tests may result in stream counts that are off by 1 frame

Performing 40G to 10G and 10G to 40G speed switching may cause some ports to go offline.
Reboot the test module to recover the ports.

Spirent TestCenter 4.49 Software and Hardware Release Notes

FX/MX-10G-Cx

Please download the latest Product Alert for Spirent TestCenter Power and Cooling for important
information about known power and cooling limitations.

Only 8 MX-10G-C8 modules are supported in SPT-11U

Do not place a MX-10G-C8 module in slot 6 or in slot 10 of an SPT-11U chassis

PPM adjustment is only supported on a test-module basis. All ports must be reserved to adjust the
PPM on any of them. If a port is released the entire module will revert back to 0 PPM.

When using the API the port may not be configured to simultaneously advertise the ability to link
at 10Gbps and 1Gbps. This limitation does not apply to a test configured from the GUI.

FX/MX-100G-F2, FX/MX-100G-F1, FX/MX-100GO-F2, FX/MX-100GO-F1, FX/MX40G-F2 and FX/MX-40G-F1

40GBASE-CR4 and 100GBASE-CR10 auto-negotiation is not supported. Workaround: Disable

auto-negotiation on the device under test.
Interface Manual mode for Cisco 40G QSFP+ optics has the following characteristics:
The settings for this mode will be applied to all ports on a module
Switching into and out of this mode requires a reboot of the module and can take up to 10
minutes
The first apply of settings after reserving a module in this mode will take up to 40s for link to
stabilize before testing can begin.

MX2-100GO-P4

Individual Port Group Reset is not supported on Colossus MX2. If attempted, the entire test
module will reboot. This is expected to be fixed in the next release.

CR2257576981 issue on cut through channel severely limits performance for control plane
packets. In certain circumstances throughput will degrade as the test progresses.

ACC-6094A

AN (CR4 Auto-Negotiation) has not been tested or verified on QSFP28. Awaiting availability
of supported vendor optics and cables.

CV-10G-S8

The CV module will default the PFC settings on. This default will consume more memory on the
port itself and could impact some of the advertised scalability numbers for the control-plane
emulation protocols. Workaround: When creating a new configuration, on the Port Setups PFC
Measurement tab, disable all the Priority Enabled Queues. Take the port offline and then
bring it back online. This will clear the PFC information running on the port and free up memory
to run non PFC tests.

P/N 77-005466 Rev. A, 02/15

Spirent TestCenter 4.49 Software and Hardware Release Notes

DX-10G-S32

Revision B hardware does not properly control the Link LED while in 1G mode. Link is properly
indicated in the GUI. The hardware revision can be viewed in the GUI using the
ToolsEquipment InformationTest Module view and by scrolling to the Hardware Version
column at the far right.

Changing speed to 1G while PPM adjust = 100, a validation error is thrown and PPM adjust is
greyed out but the ports are still in 10G. Cannot change speed when PPM adjust is not set to 0. To
recover, change the speed to 10G and apply - PPM adjust should default to 0, and then change
speed to 1G.

Revision C hardware does not support the Out of Memory daemon in this release. Testers will not
receive a warning if the module is low on memory. Please pay attention not to exceed the
supported scale metrics.

Miscellaneous Known Issues

BPK-1195A OpenFlow Switch Emulation Base Package

OpenFlow Flow action of Insert/Modify VLAN ID does not work correctly on Openflow
Switch Emulation for this release.

Switch blocks created on different ports need to be on different subnets for traffic to go out
the physical port that they are configured on.

Results Reporter

Results Reporter does not sort all data when clicking on the column headers. It only sorts what
is on the page. CR #184631206
Workaround: user must create a query to sort all the data.
The number of characters for a file name (full path) which Spirent TestCenter can handle is
limited to 222 bytes. CR # 184454263
Workaround: user must create a query to sort all the data.

Spirent TestCenter Anywhere

The stca start command may fail if the string spirent appears in the output of the ps x
command on the host operating system. This failure may occur, for example, if there is a user
logged in with spirent in the username, or if a file in the /mnt/spirent directory is being edited.

Workaround: Quit/kill any processes that show up in the output of the ps x | grep
spirent | grep v bkd command.

Ports may be unavailable when Spirent TestCenter Anywhere is started for the first time after
an install.

Workaround: To recover the ports issue the stca restart command

Spirent TestCenter Virtual QEMU/KVM

18

Spirent TestCenter 4.49 Software and Hardware Release Notes

When the user tries to reserve a newly created Spirent TestCenter virtual QEMU port, they
may encounter an Application Error, and the ports will fail to reserve.

Workaround: SSH to the Spirent TestCenter virtual QEMU VM (admin/spt_admin)

and use the portgroupsize command to correctly size the port group. The default
port group size maybe incorrectly set to 1 by the QEMU install script.

Spirent TestCenter Anywhere

Some versions of OpenVswitch have a bug that causes extremely low bandwidths to and from
the VM which can prevent the STC GUI from properly communicating with the VM.

Workaround: If you see a problem doing an Apply from the GUI, run the following
command on the VM:
ethtool -K <intf> tso off
where <intf> is the NIC chosen as the admin port

Spirent TestCenter 4.49 Software and Hardware Release Notes

Transceiver Support
Spirent has a rigorous process for selecting and qualifying transceivers to operate with its test
modules. This ensures the highest quality test results and seamless operation for end users. See the
Supported Transceiver document included with this release, or contact Spirent Support Services for
the list of qualified transceivers.
The use of unqualified transceivers may cause intermittent link issues, FCS errors, dropped packets,
auto-negotiation issues and other layer 1 problems. Even rebranded transceivers based on those on
Spirents supported list may not be fully compatible.
In cases where Spirent qualified transceivers are not used, Spirent Support Services will troubleshoot
those situations where a valid support contract is in place. However, in situations where compatibility
with unqualified transceivers is suspected, Spirent Support Services may ask the customer to replace
them with transceivers on our official list.
