The School District of Menomonee Falls is taking

steps to have the student athlete handbook apply to
other extra-curricular activities as well.
The School Board was updated on the handbook
June 8 by Athletics and Activities Director Ryan
Anderson. Anderson said Menomonee Falls is trying to
follow other school districts that have the handbook
apply to all extracurricular activities. He cited the scenario of an athlete being suspended for violation while
a member of the school play would not face any discipline.
Besides expanding the handbook to include other
extracurricular activities in addition to athletics, another
change involves prohibiting any student with a major
violation from having a leadership role, such as being a
captain on a team.
Its hard to be a captain when you say, I have a
drinking violation. I have a hard time supporting that,
Anderson said.
Also, there is a proposal allowing for suspicionless,
random drug testing of all current participants.
Anderson said the idea was suggested by the school
districts booster club, who indicated that other schools
in southeast Wisconsin conducted random drug testing.

Completing a transition
Airgas operations in place at new Germantown facility
Airgas has now transitioned all its
Germantown operations to its new facility
in the village's Industrial Park.
A ribbon cutting was held last October
for the company's new 250,000 square
foot facility at the southwest corner of
Mequon Road and Enterprise Drive in
Germantown. The new facility includes
office space, a distribution center and is the
new home for the Airgas Total Access sales
unit.
"Airgas has been a part of the
Germantown community for more than 17
years," Airgas President and Chief
Executive Office Michael L. Molinini said
at the time. "We are very pleased to have
found a new location that allows our distribution center, Airgas Total Access team,
and support offices to remain in
Germantown, while expanding our capacity to serve our customers and provide additional jobs to the region. We look forward
to continuing our successful partnerships
with the residents, businesses and civic
associations of Greater Milwaukee for
many years to come."

The company has had a facility in

Germantown since 1996 and the new
space is double the size of its previous location. According to information from the company, "the new distribution center is one of
six that Airgas operates across the country.
It will be used to stock and ship hard
goods, including welding equipment and
safety products, to Airgas customers and
branch locations throughout much of the
Midwest."
Since the ribbon cutting, the interior
construction of the building is complete, as
distribution and offices spaces were fully
operational by Dec. 14, according to information from a company spokesperson.
Also, landscaping work at the site is currently underway and will be completed
later this summer.
The spokesperson added that 15 new
associates have been hired at the new
Germantown location and the company
will continue to add to the Germantown
operation as needed.
Airgas is one of the nation's leading
suppliers of industrial, medical and special-

ty gases, and hard goods, such as welding
equipment and related products. The company's history dates back to 1982, when
Peter McCausland acquired Connecticut
Oxygen. According to information from the
company Web site, Airgas became the
holding company for CONNEX.
"Strategic acquisitions spurred significant early growth. In the early 1980s, the
U.S. market for industrial gases was dominated by a few major producers," the company Web site states. "And with the industry
entering a period of consolidation, Airgas
purchased distributors in various locations

During the 2000s, Airgas acquired Air
Products and Linde's bulk-gas business and
moved from gas distribution to gas production, the company website states.
Also according to the company Web
site, "Airgas welding gases have helped
build stages for the band Yes and provided
fog and pyrotechnics for country music stars
Rascal Flatts and LeAnn Rimes."

...Proposed changes summarized at School Board meeting

From page 1
Thats something I was not considering
until they brought it up, Anderson said.
Anderson said the drug testing has
been in place at Pewaukee High School for
the past eight years. Oconomowoc,
Arrowhead and Kimberly high schools
have also implemented random drug testing.
Anderson said in response to the suggestion from the booster club, he ran the
idea past a student committee which included students who had violations of the athletic code. He asked the students what they
thought of potential random drug testing.
It was unanimous that they supported
the random, suspicionless drug testing. They
said it would change the culture of our
building. At that point I was sold,
Anderson said. If the students are saying it,
it could be a good thing for us. Obviously,

I dont want to catch kids doing the wrong

thing, but I want it to be out there that if
theyre representing our school, that they
could be caught.
Also under changes in the handbook:
The decision regarding violation of
the athletics and activities code made by
the school principal will be final;
Coaches and advisors cant have a
stiffer violation for their programs that what
is assessed by the school.
They cant supercede the code, which
has happened in other districts. We want to
be careful that the programs dont outweigh
the athletics and activities department,
Anderson said.
In addition, language will now be
included that will allow for inspection of
luggage on overnight trips.
Teachers, coaches, advisors always
hear rumors and we respond to those
rumors. If we hear that theres a rumor that

our kids are not safe or somebody brought

something thats not safe, were going to
take a peak, Anderson said. We wanted
that spelled out in the code.
Superintendent Faith VanderHorst said
class activities such as band should be
included with such regulations, since they
also represented the school district.
Anderson said class-related activities would
fall under the student handbook.
Menomonee Falls High School
Principal Corey Golla, in commenting if language in the athletics and activities hand-

book should also be included in the student

handbook that addresses classroom activity, said that as a general rule any student
that poses a major risk to our students we
wouldnt want to be overnight traveling any
group.
During additional discussion, Anderson
said that students would typically sign a
consent form agreeing to comply with the
activities code in ninth grade.
The item was on the board agenda for
discussion only. The item will return to the
board at the July 22 meeting.

147 students recognized at GCSF Scholarship Awards Night

On May 27 during the Germantown
Community Scholarship Fund (GCSF)
Senior Scholarship awards night, a total of
147 Germantown high school seniors were
awarded scholarships.
Of the total awards presented that
evening, 89 scholarships totaling more than
$125,000 were GCSF scholarships awarded as a direct result of the fundraising
efforts of the GCSF organization.
This is the largest achievement in the
history of GCSF. These scholarship dollars
represent the belief the community has in
our youth, said GCSF President Deb
Stresing, It also shows the commitment of
area businesses, our valued sponsors, gen-

erous donors, and volunteers whose dedicated efforts have raised the scholarship
funds we are proud to present tonight.
Not only did the awards night recognize student achievements, but presenters of
the 37 individual or company named scholarships shared many of their stories.
Memorial scholarships on behalf of Phil
Datka, Wayne Baumgartner/Industrial
Recyclers,
Wayne
Heidel/Jennifer
Semmann Foundations, Brent Reiter
Memorial, and Chuck Ritzenthaler Science
were among the scholarships that also recognized contributions made by some wellremembered members of our community.
This years recipients of the GCSF

Teacher Grant award were also named:

John Gradel, Amy Belle Elementary School
and Melissa Pecunia, MacArthur
Elementary School. Teacher Grants are
awarded to help teachers purchase items
that will improve learning in their classrooms.
Also recognized was BMO Harris, for
their financial support as Premier Corporate
Sponsor for GCSF. Their yearlong sponsorship directly supports the ability of GCSF to
fundraise for the scholarships that were
awarded this year. Since 1981, over $2.3
million has been awarded in scholarships to
2,269 Germantown area students pursuing
higher education at colleges, universities or

vocational/technical schools. The GCSF

trust fund was initiated in 1981 by a donation from the Germantown Rotary Club in
the amount of $10,000. A $200,000
donation in 1990 from the Germantown
Volunteer Fire Company greatly increased
the trust fund. The remaining scholarships
are funded by donations from fundraising
events, businesses, service organizations
and individuals.

"The Perfect Equation"

t. Boniface's annual Math Fair adds to the end of the school year frenzy.
Through fun and creative games, the first through seventh grade students test
the math skills they learned throughout the year. It is just another way St.
Boniface infuses a little whimsy into serious education.

Clara Theine (aka Ms. T), St. Boniface's math specialist and volunteer extraordinaire, conducts the beloved Math Fair. Ms. T
takes the time to visit each classroom, teaching the students all
they need to know before the main event. Her passion for math,
the school, and the students shines through everything she
does. A parent, Joanna Grossi, perfectly sums up Ms. T by saying:" Ms. T is such a
blessing to our school, not only because of the work she does but because of her big
heart. She has such a passion for learning, teaching students, and helping others."
The Math Fair is comprised of several games utilizing math concepts, ranging from
basic addition/subtraction problems to more challenging multiplication/division
equations. Students are given two tickets per game, allowing everyone a chance to
play all the games in their skill level. The older students
get in the act by leading the games. It is hard to tell
who is having more fun - the leaders or the players. The
Math Fair is always a rousing success and enjoyed by all
involved, but if you ask a student what their favorite
part of the fair is nine out of ten will tell you it's the
penny candy that can be won. That's a pretty sweet way
to learn math!

the first inning, Germantown got the first two

CORN FARMERS

Call Attorney Charles H. Johnson 1-800-535-5727

Dear Dr. Winter, I have just been told I have 5 crowns with
cavities under them. Two of these are part of bridges that are
only 1 year old. I floss diligently and brush twice a day. What
could cause cavities around bridges and crowns in such a short
time.
Dear Ann, without seeing x-rays and doing an exam, I can
only tell you that the reasons for decay are as follows:
1. Decay was left inside the tooth when the crowns were
placed.
2. The crowns did not fit properly.
3. You are missing areas with your floss and you may have a
high sugar diet.
4. A microscopic dental lab wasnt used which resulted in
cement leaching out and leaving a gap between the tooth and
crown that became more easily decayed.
Lets examine these one by one. Decay left in a tooth. When
the crown was done, the filling under the crown may have been
old and in need of replacement. If this decay was not found and
removed meticulously, this decay is like a time bomb that will
continue to eat away tooth structure even with a newly
cemented crown. The solution to this is to make sure the dentist
used magnifying glasses and caries stain detectors to insure
there is no decay left inside the tooth. Then a new filling or core
should be done prior to preparing the tooth for a new crown. It
is essential that a crown sit on clean, healthy tooth structure.
Next, the crowns did not fit properly. The type of lab a
dentist selects and their attention to detail will determine how
tight the crown fits on the tooth. The dentist usually selects
dental labs based upon how much the patients insurance pays
to make the crown. If insurance reimbursement is low, the
dentist will select a less expensive lab. Conversely, if a patient
has high esthetic demands, the dentist may use a master
ceramist to insure the crowns will look better, fit better and last
longer.
Today many crowns are sent overseas to receive big
discounts. Your dentist should be able to show you a made in
the USA verification if they have chosen a laboratory in the
United States that uses microscopes for crown fabrication.
The next reason a crown may fail may be from poor oral
hygiene habits and a high sugar diet. The sipping of sugar
sodas, fruit juices, sports drinks and the inability to remove this
sugar with proper brushing and flossing can result in cavities in

Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

a short time. We recommend water and milk and coconut
water as great low sugar drinks! Have your hygienist watch
you brush and floss to assess your techniques!
Lastly, gaps under your crowns will allow cement to leach
out. While there will always be a micro-gap between a crown
and remaining tooth, the larger the gap, the more the cement
can leak out by being exposed to foods and salivary acids.
Ask your dentist if they are using microscopic dental labs.
Do your research! If you have crowns that fail, have your
other crowns assessed to make sure they are serviceable
before any further destruction can occur.
We invite our readers to schedule their comprehensive xray and examination visit. We can discuss implants, crowns,
and cosmetic concerns while assuring you that we use the
very best materials and labs. Please call us at 414-464- 9021

On May 13, Uptown Chrysler Jeep

Dodge and Slinger High School hosted a
Dodge Booster Club Fundraiser and
together raised $3,380 for Slinger High
School Booster Club. During the fundraiser, held in conjunction with the Technology
& Engineering Event on 5/13/2015, the
Dodge brand contributed $20 for each
test drive taken in a new Dodge Durango,
Dart, Grand Caravan, or Journey.
It is very rewarding for Dodge to partner with our dealers on this wonderful program that gives thousands of dollars to
local booster clubs to support their high
school students, said Jeffrey Kommor,

Vice President - Sales Operations, FCA US

LLC. It's a win-win program for parents,
dealers and students alike, and a great
way to showcase our exciting 2015
Dodge vehicle lineup.
With the cooperation of local dealers
like Uptown Chrysler Jeep Dodge in
Slinger, the Dodge brand supports local
schools and student enrichment programs
in communities across the United States,
and has helped raise over $6 million since
1993. Last year alone, Dodge donated
more than $725,000 to local high school
organizations through the Dodge Booster
Club Fundraiser.

Slinger, Wis., June 7Steve Apel captured his third feature victory of the season
Sunday at the Slinger Super Speedway as he
held off Dale Prunty to win the 60-lap super
late model main event on Reunion Night.
I probably have the best crew out there,
Apel said from victory lane explaining the
extra work performed on his car this week
after experiencing a fire while practicing a
few days ago in Madison, They are totally
dedicated and I have to thank my wife for
putting up with me being in the race shop
until two or three in the morning. I was
hoping to get through the lapped traffic as
quick as I could and not get held up too
much because I knew if I did they would

catch me, Apel continued, The car was

pretty good this week but well try to make it
just a little bit better for next week.
When asked the difference between his
second place finish and a victory, runner-up
Dale Prunty simply stated, Another caution.
Steve (Apel) beat me and raced me clean
and I was hoping for another caution
because I might have had a little bit left,
Prunty stated before giving a heartfelt dedication of the finish to longtime friend and
sponsor Fritz Wiedmeyer who passed away
earlier in the week.
Josh Wallace won the 30-lap super late

NEED A CARPENTER?
Slinger childs lemonade stand
to benefit cancer research
NIKKI ACKERMAN
STAFF WRITER
When 8-year-old Slinger resident
Chase Jacklin holds his lemonade stand
June 14, he will not be raising money for
his piggybank, but rather for a much
greater cause.
Chase is hosting an Alexs Lemonade
Stand during Alexs Lemonade Days
(June 12-14) to raise funds and awareness for the fight against childhood cancer. With his standwhich will offer both
lemonade and sno-cones for donationsChase hopes to continue Alex's
Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF)
founder Alex Scotts mission to find
childhood cancer cures, one cup of
lemonade at a time.
The ingoing third grader at Addison
Elementary School learned about the
opportunity from his mother, Brenda
Jacklin, who is an employee of
Northwestern Mutual. Northwestern
Mutual supports and encouraged its
employees to help the ALSF cause in one
of three waysstand up (host lemonade stand); suit up (purchase a T-shirt);
or speed up (participate in the corresponding run/walk held each year).
Chase is a huge fan of lemonade
stands so the choice was a no-brainer,

said Brenda.
Chase loves to put on lemonade
stands, so we thought this was a perfect
fit, she said. He often hosts stands with
his friends and brothers (Marshall, 13,
and Andrew, 11).
Brenda said she and her husband,
Bill, are quite pleased with their sons
willingness to help children in need.
We are really proud of him to be
willing to do all this work for a great
cause, she said.
I feel really good doing this, added
Chase. The stand will be run on donations that will go toward the ALSF so the
big-hearted boy jokingly added, I will
tell people, If you want this glass of
lemonade, that will be $10!
Chases stand will run from noon to 3
p.m. at the Jacklin residence at 3984
Elaines Way, Slinger.
About Alexs Lemonade Stand
Days...
Founded by Alex Scott (1996-2004)
in 2004, Alexs Lemonade Days is a
three-day national event that grew out of
Alex's front yard lemonade stand. During
Alexs Lemonade Days, dedicated volunteers host thousands of Alex's Lemonade
Stands across the country, raising over
$1 million for childhood cancer research.

Falls resident earns Eagle Scout honor

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN
STAFF WRITER
Menomonee Falls High School junior
Anthony Levine has been in it to win it
since day one.
Born 24 weeks early with a 20 percent
chance of survival, the now 17-year-old
who recently earned the prestigious rank of
Eagle Scout came into the world defying
the odds and pushing through his struggles.
He had every problem you could have
and he overcame every single one, said
mom Becca Hart. Throughout his life, he
has overcome challenge after challenge.
During this time, Boy Scouts has been a
constant.
Anthony joined Tiger Cub Pack 109
when he was in first grade and has been
involved ever since, officially earning his
Eagle Scout rank May 9.
He accomplished this honor by building
13 cat beds (which go into the cat crates
and help the cats with stress and boredom)
for the Humane Animal Welfare Society
(HAWS) in Waukesha where he and his
mom have volunteered for the past two
years.
The processfrom fundraising to gathering supplies to creating and delivering the
bedstook about a year and a half from
start to finish.

There was a lot of planning involved,

said Anthony, who was assisted by his fellow troop members. When we delivered
the beds, they appreciated it very much. I
also gave HAWS a check for $100 (with
leftover funds) so they could purchase extra
supplies.
Sara Stoss, volunteer coordinator at
HAWS, described Anthonys project asvery
meaningful to us and the cats in our care.
These beds provided our kitties with a
source of comfort, not just physical, but
emotional as well, improving the well-being
of our cats, Stoss went on. The beds are
holding up beautifully; they are in use and
we love them. This was a big deal what
Anthony did for us. This is a long-lasting
contribution.
Although he has reached the highest
rank in Scouting, Anthony plans to continue
to be active in the organization.
I want to help other Scouts reach the
goal of becoming an Eagle Scout, he said.
The busy teen also plays the trumpet,
works at Roberts Frozen Custard and is
looking at colleges for early acceptance.
He is planning to pursue a career in criminal justice.
It has been wonderful being his mom,
said Becca. As a parent I can only be very,
very proud of him. There are no other
words.

Remodeling spending increases as renovations on the rise

In the not-so-distant past, home improvement
projects all but came to a halt, as homeowners
were weary about investing any money into fixeruppers. But the tides have changed dramatically
in recent months, and homeowners are again
ready and willing to invest big dollars into home
renovations.
Renewed confidence in the economy and an
upswing in the real estate market have contributed to the remodeling frenzy. In early 2014,
the Joint Center for Housing Statistics of Harvard
University forecasted nearly $150 billion in
major remodeling spending over the year. JCHS
said as homeowners gain more confidence in the
housing market, they're more likely to undertake
home improvements they would have avoided in
recent years.
While the numbers do not yet match prerecession remodeling spending, the number of
construction projects has steadily trended
upward. According to the National Association
of Home Builders, as of November 2014, a
greater number of remodelers reported higher
business activity than during the previous quarter. Remodeling spending has been gradually
climbing back up from the all-time low it reached
in 2009.
This growth in home renovations has led to
more jobs for carpenters, plumbers, painters,
electricians, and other construction workers. In
Massachusetts alone, a recovery in overall construction employment has led to a gain of about
18,000 jobs during the past four years.
The Home Improvement Research Institute
expects an additional 5.8 percent sales growth
in home improvement spending in 2015. States
that showed the highest levels of home improvement spending in 2014 are likely to continue to
hold the top spots through 2015, and the

National Association of Home Builders says

these areas include the District of Columbia,
Connecticut,
New
Jersey,
Maryland,
Massachusetts, and areas of southern California.
Americans are not the only ones increasing
their home spending. According to reports
released by Moneris Solutions Corporation,
Canada's largest credit and debit card processor, purchases at home improvement stores rose
by 8.49 percent over the same period last year,
and spending on plumbing and heating equipment and electrical contractors climbed by 5.14
percent and 5.08 percent, respectively.
Spending patterns indicate that homeowners are
investing in DIY projects as well as seeking specialized work provided by professional contractors. Now is a good time for the real estate and
home improvement sectors, as homeowners have
renewed their fervor for making home renovations, both to increase comfort in their homes and
make their homes more buyer-friendly.
