1. Foreword by the Dean

Dear incoming students,
We are happy to welcome you at the Faculty of Economics and Business at the
University of Maribor. We are very pleased that you chose us for your destination within the international exchange programmes and we will do our best to
make your stay in Slovenia a fruitful one.
The University of Maribor, the second biggest Slovenian university, has been a
leader in Slovenia concerning international exchange of students for years. This
is especially true for the Faculty of Economics and Business since we have a
vast experience in this field. In past years, we have built connections with many
partners within the EU. This will enable you to meet students of many different
nationalities and to establish a lot of different contacts. In order to facilitate and
motivate student mobility, we have the International Office, which does not just
provide sufficient support but is also a pleasant meeting point. We are sure
that the head of office, Ms. Sanja Kocijan, M.Sc., and other staff will be willing
to answer all the questions you may have and will assist you during your stay
in Maribor.
One of constitutional constraints in Slovenia is that lectures within the full time
study must be held in the Slovenian language. Up to now, we have dealt with
this by organizing additional lectures and consultations in English for selected
courses for our foreign students and so you have quite a few of them at your
disposal. We expect that in the near future we will be able to offer you even
more courses in English.
We are convinced that you will be able to benefit from your stay at the FEB as
regards the knowledge of business and economics and that you will be able to
fulfil the expectations of your home institutions. In addition to your study, there
will be numerous social events during your stay, which surely you will remember
for years. Slovenia is a country with different landscapes and various cultural
roots explore it as you travel along the nice countryside and discover pleasant
towns.
We hope you will enjoy your stay in Maribor and in Slovenia and that this will
not be your last visit to our country but for many of you just the first one. The
Faculty and our students will surely contribute to your decision to use your next
possibility to come here.

With best wishes,

Prof. Samo Bobek, PhD., Dean

2. Faculty of Economics and Business

(FEB) at the University of Maribor
FEB Milestones
On 2 July, 1959, the two-year post secondary School of Commerce was established in Maribor.
This act represented the foundation of the present day Faculty of Economics and Business as well
as the University of Maribor. The purpose of the establishment was to bridge the gap between
the secondary and university education in economics.
In 1963, the School of Economics and
Commerce was renamed the School of
Economics and Business, which became
renowned by its Slovenian acronym VEK
throughout the country. The development
of the VEK meant the growth in quality as
well as its internal maturation. In 1969, the
VEK became the first and for a number of
years the only higher education institution in
Maribor.
In 1971, a good academic staff structure and
quality work led to the initiation of postgraduate programme. In 1976, the first Ph.D. title was awarded at the VEK, which was at the
same time the first one at the University of Maribor.
In 1989, the formal growth of the VEK reached its peak when the School was named the
Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB).
Since then, the Faculty has been intenIn 1969, VEK became the first
sively developing its undergraduate and
postgraduate programmes and gaining
higher education institution in
international recognition.

Maribor. The move to higher

education
meant higher requirements, i.e.
the implementation of advanced
educational and research tasks.

General information for

students
Slovenia
Slovenia, the green heart of Europe, lies
between the mountainous Austria, Croatia and
Italy, flat Hungary and the warm Adriatic Sea. Its
variety and beauty surprise visitors from all over
the world. Snowy Alpine peaks and the Triglav
National Park with many glacial valleys, gorges,
waterfalls, lakes, and crystal-clear wild waters
visitors looking for peace in the mountains, as
well as sports climbers, skiers, canoeists and
gliders in search for relaxation and excitement.
The Alpine tourist centre is Bled with an island
in the middle of a lake and a mighty castle on
top of the cliff.
Only a two hours' drive separates mountain
lovers from pleasures offered by the Slovenian

great deal of entertainment and the exquisite
Primorska cuisine with fish specialities and top

The Karst region with its caves, plateaus, fields,
disappearing streams, and a periodic lake
offers many possibilities for exploring and discovering Slovenia. There are many subterranean caves, from the world famous Postojnska
Cave with beautiful stalactites, pillars and rocky
curtains and UNESCO's heritage kocjan Caves
to grottos that are difficult to access, where
climbing is only possible with experienced local
guides. In Lipica (Karst), sheltered by centuryold lime trees, there is an over 400 year old stud
farm of Lipizzaners, the famous white horses of
Slovenian origin.
Numerous natural spas developed near thermal

spirit and body, relaxation and well-being, entertainment and recreation in all seasons.
The cultural heritage of Slovenia is opulent and
colourful but unfortunately often abandoned.
One of the indicators of the rich Slovenian
history and cultural heritage are its castles. The
Slovenian identity has developed together with
a rich cultural life. It is mirrored in village and
city architecture, numerous folk customs, cultural
events, museums and galleries. Ljubljana, the
capital of Slovenia, is an architectural treasure,
the centre of economic, cultural and political life

Maribor
Maribor, whose origins as a town can be traced
back to the 13th century, is today the second
largest city (115 000 inhabitants) of Slovenia
and represents the centre of Slovenian Styria
(tajerska) region.
The citys character has been shaped by its
industry, which once performed a significant
role in the Slovenian economy. Apart from
that, Maribor offers a rich and varied cultural
experience to inhabitants and visitors alike
with its renowned Slovenian National Theatre
Maribor, featuring drama, opera and ballet performances, a number of museums and galleries
offering numerous cultural events.
In addition to many cultural events, the citizens
can enjoy the citys beautiful and relaxing surroundings as it lies at the foothills of the Pohorje
mountains, providing several outdoor activities
such as hiking and skiing.
Special events, such as the traditional Golden
Fox Trophy, a Womens Ski World Cup competition, as well as the international multicultural
Festival Lent and events around the Old Vine
provide a particularly animated atmosphere.
Maribor is also known for its excellent wines, as
many vineyards surround the city.
Moreover, with its University, Maribor is also a
city with a distinguished intellectual potential.
The fact that the town has chosen to call itself

with a lively tourist atmosphere.

Climate and weather

Slovenia lies in the northern moderate warm
zone, in a region where there is twice as much
rain and snowfall as the world average, and
consequently the Slovenian countryside is
pleasantly green. Simultaneously, Maribor
shares a strong Pannonian influence, and
that is why the amount of rainfall in the city is
somewhat lower (on an average 1050 mm per
year). Most rain falls from April to July, mostly as
showers and heavy rain.
Maribor is one of the sunniest places in Slovenia;
it has an average of 266 sunny days per year.
Fog mainly occurs in winter in the early hours
of the morning. The citys favourable position
also protects Mariborians and visitors from
unpleasant winds.

Cultural Life
Maribor provides a lot of possibilities to spend
your free time. You can visit museums, galleries,
theatres, cinemas or you can spend the evening
with your friends in one of the pubs and disco
clubs.
Cultural events may contribute to helping you get
acquainted with the city. Some of these events

are known also abroad - especially the Festival

Lent (lent.slovenija.net) in the early summer, the
festival of chamber music Musical September
and the Bortnik Meeting of Slovenian theatres.
Nature
Maribor lies in the embrace of the green Pohorje
mountains and wine growing hills, at both sides
of the river Drava. Pohorje is a skiing centre
in winter and a place for hiking, cycling, and
recreation all year round (www.pohorje.si).
In the municipality of Maribor there is a large
number of protected natural sights: three
regional/landscape parks (Drava, Trije ribniki,
Mariborsko jezero), a natural reserve (Mariborski
otok) and others.

Compulsory health insurance

During their temporary stay in the Republic of
Slovenia, insured persons from the EU member
states will be able to claim medical services
in public health institutions and from private
doctors who have concluded a contract with the
Health Insurance Institute of Slovenia (HIIS) on
the basis of the European health insurance card.
Medical services may only be claimed at the
primary level in health centres and from general

Erasmus Student Network (ESN) Projects

for Exchange Students
The Erasmus Student Network at the University
of Maribor assists exchange students during
their stay in Slovenia and organises the Welcome
Week as well as trips and other events.
Each exchange student is cared for by her or his
mentor, a Slovenian student that will help at any
time and give an understanding of Maribors
student and cultural life.
The Welcome Week takes place the week
before the start of each semester or during
the first week of the semester. It lasts five days
and tends to help incoming students arranging
formalities, getting to know the city and its sur-

the HIIS, while from specialists and in hospitals
this may only be done on the basis of a doctor's
referral issued by a general practitioner. In cases
of emergency a foreign insured person may
also go directly to the emergency service in the
nearest hospital.

roundings, and many other things.

Besides the Welcome Week, ESN arranges weekly
evening meetings, birthday parties, cultural
events, sports activities and trips to different
regions of Slovenia. This is a cheap and successful
way to get to know the treasures of Slovenia and
regularly means great fun!

Letters from exchange students

We invite you to browse through the experiences
of students who spent a semester or a year in
Maribor. Find some of these experiences here;
even more are available from the International
Students Report Service, www.iris.siu.no/iris.nsf/
reports.

Marzena Ficek from Katowice,

Hello! If you think about studying somewhere
abroad you have to choose the University of
Maribor in Slovenia. Slovenia is a small but so
beautiful country, Maribor is full of nice coffee
places. The faculty offers interesting subjects and
has very helpful professors. ESN organise a time
full of attractions so you dont even have to worry
about being bored. What are you waiting for? Go
and apply for a semester in Maribor.
Hannu Arola from Vaasa,
In my opinion, an exchange time is much more than
just school. Its about spending time with different
people and a good experience of living in a foreign
country In Maribor, I lived in a student dormitory,
which I really enjoyed. Overall, I want to say that
my time in Maribor was one of the greatest periods
in my whole life. I got a lot of new friends from all
over the world.
Margarita Nikolova and Dilyana
Georgieva from Varna
For us, being Erasmus students has been the
best time in our lives so far! We wouldnt have
imagined that so many different people from so
many different countries can become such good
friends. Besides, Erasmus proved to be useful for us
because we learned about a foreign country, about
the way of life, the culture by actually living here.
We touched the atmosphere and we fell in love
with Slovenia! Being Erasmus makes you even more
open-minded, and it would never be the same
without the ESN team and the International Office
who always helped and advised us.

Ceclia Szolnoki from Budapest,

I was a CEEPUS student in Maribor for the winter
semester 2005/2006, and luckily, I could stay
until June 2006. I applied for the prolongation
because of the wonderful time, the school, and
the surroundings. The professors here made our
life easier, they were always ready to help, as well
as the International Office and the ESN. If I had to
choose again a place to go, for sure it would be
Maribor again!
Ivan Antonijevi from Podgorica
This is my first time to be separated from my
family for a longer period. The people in Maribor,
the exchange students, the professors all are
really kind and help in any situation. So after one
semester I decided to prolong my stay in Slovenia.
Mart Knol from Leeuwarden
When the teachers at my school told me to go to
Maribor I had no idea to what kind of country I
would be going. But after a few days in Maribor
I experienced that the Slovenians were very nice
and open minded. We stayed in a nice student
dormitory and had the opportunity to visit also
the neighbouring countries like Austria, Croatia
and Hungary. I met people from other countries
and got to know their habits: You can have a
great time with other students at one of the
parties. The faculty is very well arranged. The
first day you get a good introduction what you
can expect. And the courses that I followed had a
good quality. When you have the opportunity of
studying in Maribor dont hesitate!
