COURSE DESCRIPTION
Intermediate Chinese is the third in a series of Chinese language courses offered for students with minimal
background in Chinese. The course will utilize Hanyu Pinyin (Beijing Chinese phonetic system) as a means
to recognize Chinese character leading to sentence construction. Reading and Writing Applied Chinese
would be the main focus, from simple messages to formal letters. It also teaches the practical utilization of
this knowledge vis--vis technology and e-learning, such as but not limited to researching Chinese reference
materials and social networking.
Course Specific Objectives
1. Students will communicate information on going around, shopping and ordering using the target language
2. Students are able to provide information on written and spoken text about short letter notice and short
video clips
3. Students will engage actively in written output and response to data gathering based on interview about
personal interest and hobbies
4. Student will interpret &engage with visual text that is presented with spoken & written text relating to
menu
5.Students can express himself freely on topics about personal opinions and interest
6.Students will develop critical awareness and respect for cultural differences

Week 1

Pinyin Review : Pinyin as guide to character recognition


Single character word to phrase construction
Grammar and Pattern Review: Pinyin to Sentence Construction
Introduction to different forms of IMS in the Chinese( eg.Wechat )

Week 2

Short Introduction: From Cards to E-Cards

Student Output #5 (pair-work): You need to identify online short messages based on the occasion assigned to you. You
need to interpret message behind it understanding appropriateness of word use, then you need to modify ( for minimal
background students) or create ( for students with background) your own short message. ( eg. Your own future
wedding invitation in Chinese)
Student Output #6 (pair-work): Short message for a particular occasion. You need to create two short messages for
two different occasions using Chinese language in a Filipino Cultural Context ( eg. write a short message to your
teacher on Araw ng Kagitingan)

Classroom Policies
1. A student who arrives ten minutes after the second bell is considered late. Two tardiness is
considered a cut.
2. A student may leave the room once during the class and should not take any longer than five (5)
minutes. If the student had to leave the class early, the instructor had to be informed before the start
of the class.
3. No special quizzes nor make-up exam for those who missed due to tardiness or cuts, except absences
due to illness. In such cases, the student must inform the Instructor two (2) days after he officially
reports to class to discuss coverage and schedule of make-up exam. Failure to do this will forfeit him
to take make-up exam. An official letter from a registered physician (with telephone no.) should be
presented upon seeing the instructor. No physician letter, no make- up exam.
4. During report days, no one should absent himself from class. Every cut during the report days will
result to a 4% deduction on overall grades
5. Homework/papers / orals submitted late will not be accepted
Guidelines for Student Output Tasks:
1. Each output is expected to be submitted at the end of each unit discussion and on the given
deadline. Works submitted beyond the deadline will not be accepted. Students need to submit each
task both in soft copy and hard copy format. Lacking in one format will entail incomplete
submission which corresponds to point deduction.
2. In the course of your work, use correct referencing and proper citation.( APA format).Sources
should be identified within the text ( in text references) as well as in the list of references.
