Microbiology concentrators should elect Biology 130 and 140 during

their freshman year so that Microbiology 385 can be elected the Fall
of their Sophomore year. This allows maximum flexibility and selection of upper division Microbiology and Biological Sciences courses.
Upon reaching 85 credit hours, a CASL student should automatically
receive a senior audit from the CASL Office of Advising and Student
Records. Once the audit has been received, the student should meet
with his/her concentration advisor to review the audit. Students are
further advised of 1) the CASL graduation requirement of 48 upper
division hours, and 2) the CASL distribution requirements, a summary
of which may be obtained through the CASL Office of Student Records.

Revised 1/08 MTA

Students may apply no more than 44 credit hours of course work in

Biological Sciences and in Microbiology toward the 120 credit hours
required for graduation.

This booklet is intended solely as a summary of degree

requirements in Microbiology. It is the responsibility of
students to be familiar with any and all CASL and campus
regulations and requirements, and to meet with the
concentration advisor at least once a year.

The field of Microbiology encompasses the study of a

wide diversity of organisms, including bacteria, fungi, and
viruses. The program in Microbiology is designed to prepare students for laboratory positions in industry, government, and university research. The program also
provides a foundation for graduate work in Microbiology,
Virology, Molecular Biology, and Medicine as well as other
areas. Certification is possible by special examination
upon graduation.
