ThemissionofCMCIistorecognizethroughcertificationindividualknowledgeandexperience

CMCIisgovernedbyaBoardofGovernors.TheBoardisresponsibleforpoliciesandprocedures
affectingcriteriaforprofessionalcertificationandthedeterminationofindividualcertification
statusofapplicantsenrolledintheCMCertificationProgram.

2.0
PURPOSE
Thishandbookisintendedasaguideforthoseinvolvedintheprocessofobtainingcertification
asconstructionmanagers.Itisnotintendedasapolicydocumentbutratheratranslationof
policyintoprocedures.Anyquestionsthatarenotcoveredbytheseproceduresshouldbe
referredtotheInstitute.

3.0
CONSTRUCTION/PROGRAMMANAGEMENTDEFINED
CMAAdefinesConstructionManagementasaprofessionalservicethatapplieseffective
managementtechniquestotheplanning,design,andconstructionofaprojectfrominceptionto
completionforthepurposeofcontrollingtime,costandquality.

ProgramManagementisthepracticeofprofessionalconstructionmanagementappliedtoa
capitalimprovementprogramofoneormoreprojectsfrominceptiontocompletion.
Comprehensiveconstructionmanagementservicesareusedtointegratethedifferentfacetsofthe
constructionprocessplanning,design,procurement,constructionandactivationforthe
purposeofprovidingstandardizedtechnicalandmanagementexpertiseoneachproject.
AprofessionalConstructionManager(CM)actsasanextensionofstafftotheOwnerand
managestheentireprojectwithpreplanning,design,construction,engineeringandmanagement
expertisethatcanassurethebestpossibleprojectoutcomenomatterwhattypeofproject
deliverymethodused.

STEPSTOCERTIFICATION
Therearefourstepsinthecertificationprocess:

CMCIexpectstheapplicationreviewprocess,advancementtocandidacy,andsuccessful
completionoftheexaminationtobecompletedinatimelymanner.Applicantsapprovedfor
advancementtotheexamphase,haveuptoone(1)yeartotakeandpasstheexam.Theone(1)
yearbeginsontheformalnotificationdateofadvancement.Extensionsbeyondtheone(1)year
timeperiodmaybegrantedforreasonsbeyondthecontrolofthecandidatethatadversely
impactthecandidatesabilitytotaketheexamsuchasmedical,militaryservice,etc.The
candidatemustmakeawrittenrequestforanextensionandattachtheappropriatesupporting
documentationverifyingthereasonfortheextensionforCMCIsreviewandapproval.

5.0
ELIGIBILITY
Thefirststepintheapplicationprocessistocompletetheeligibilityformintheapplication
packet.Theapplicantmustacknowledgethatheorshehastherequisiteexperienceasbeing
ResponsibleinCharge(RIC).The48monthsRICexperiencetogetherwithalltherequired
experienceinthesixdomainofknowledgeandskillsinthequalifyingmatrixandtheeducation
requirementwillallowtheapplicanttomoveforwardtotheapplication.

6.0
APPLICATION
OncetheInstitutereceivestheapplicationandprocessingfee,wewillreviewtheentirepacketfor
completeness.Ifthereisanymissingmaterialorinformationintheapplication,adetailedstatus
reportwillbeemailedtotheapplicant.Inthemeantime,theInstitutewillrequestlettersfrom
theapplicantsclientreferences.Ifallitemsinyourfilearecompleteandtheofficehasreceived
bothCMCIReferenceforms,theapplicationissenttomembersoftheBoardofGovernorsforthe
finalreview.

6.1
CMCIIDNumbers
EachapplicantwillreceiveauniqueCMCIID#.EachIDhasanumberthatisbasedontheorder
theapplicationisreceived.ThisIDnumberstayswiththeapplicantthroughouttheapplication
processandasaCertifiedConstructionManager.ApplicantsshouldkeepthisIDnumberina
safeplace.

6.2
Confidentiality
Allapplicationsareconfidential;noinformationwillbereleasedwithouttheapplicantswritten
permission.MembersoftheBoardofGovernorsandtheCertificationOfficestaffhavesigned
statementsofnondisclosure.

7.0
CANDIDACY
TheBoardwillmakeitsrecommendationtoeitheradvanceanapplicanttocandidacyordeny
candidacy.Thisreviewprocessgenerallytakes30daysbutmaytakeasmanyas60daysor
more.

Advancement
TheBoardofGovernorshasthesoleauthoritytoadvanceanapplicanttocandidacy.This
determinationissolelybasedontheinformationsuppliedbytheapplicantintheapplication
form.Afterapproval,theInstitutewillinformtheapplicantofthedecisionalongwiththe
proceduresforregisteringforthecomputerbasedexamination.

7.2
NonAdvancement
Ifanapplicationhasbeendeniedadvancementtocandidacy,anexplanationwillbeprovided.
Sometimes,reviewerswillrequestadditionalinformationforconsiderationforadvancementto
candidacy.

7.3
AppealofaDeterminationofNonCandidacy
Instructionsforinitiatinganappealorarequestforclarificationwillbeincludedwiththereport
specifyingreasonsfornonadvancement.

7.4
CMCICandidacyandCMAAMembership
ApplyingtotheCCMprogramdoesnotconfersimultaneousmembershipinCMAA.TheCCM
programisoperatedindependentlyfromCMAA.ForalistofCMAAmembershipbenefitsand
forinformationonhowtobecomeaCMAAmember,applicantsshouldpointtheirbrowserto

8.0
EXAMINATION
Onlythoseapplicantsadvancedtocandidacyareallowedtositforthecomprehensive
examination.

AllapplicantsareencouragedtopurchasepublicationstopreparefortheCCMexamontheir
ownthroughCMAAorotherresources.Forafulllistofpublications,pleaserefertotheCM

Onceadvancedtocandidacy,anapplicantshouldrequestaRequesttoTestformfromthe
CertificationOffice.YoucanlocatetestingfacilitiesfortheCCMExamathttp://cmaanet.org/ccmexam-site. CMCInowofferstheCCMexamongoing.Youmaychooseanythreedateswithinthe
calendaryearandwewilltrytoaccommodate. Oncetheformandfeehavebeensubmitted,the
applicantwillberegisteredbyCMCIfortheexam.Thetestingfeeis$275;theretakefeeis$100.

Onceyourexamhasbeenscheduled,youmaycancelyourexamappointmentupto72hoursin
advancewithnofees.Ifyouneedtocancelyourexamappointmentwithin72hours,youwillbe
requiredtopaya$100fee.

ExaminationComposition
TheexaminationassessesgeneralknowledgeofdesignandconstructionandmaterialinCMAAs
StandardsofPractice.Basedontheresultsofthe2004CMindustrysurvey,theCMCIBoardof
GovernorshasmodifiedthequantityoftheCMcertificationexamquestionstoreflectthe
followingpercentages:

Format
Theexaminationconsistsofapproximately200multiplechoicequestions.

ExamSites
TheCCMexaminationwillbeadministeredatitstestingvendorslocationsongoingthroughout
theyear.TestingattheSpringandNationalConferenceswillbeheldatsecuresitesinthehost
city.Thetestingisdeliveredonsecuredcomputerterminalsatthesesites.

TestResults
Thepassingscoreisdeterminedbyastatisticalformulaandmayvaryamongthetestiterations.
Theexamisdesignedonlytodistinguishthosewhohavethebasiclevelofknowledgefromthose
whodonot.Thereisnoevidencethatsomeonewhoreceivesaveryhighscoreontheexamwill
performsignificantlybetteronthejobthansomeonewhosescorefallsexactlyatthepassing
point.Therefore,ifonepassestheexam,heorshewillbeinformedonlythattheexamination
stagehasbeensuccessfullycompleted.

Applicantswhofailtheexamwillbenotifiedoftheirscoreandadiagnosticreportshowingtheir
performanceineachcontentarea.Thisinformationisprovidedtoaidindecidingwhetherto
retaketheexamandplanningstudyeffortsforfutureexams.

Allexamresultsareconfidentialandwillonlybereleasedtotheexaminee.Permissioninwriting
mustbeobtainedbytheexamineetoreleaseexamresultstoanotherparty.

8.8
Retakes
Ifanapplicantdoesnotpasstheexaminationthefirsttime,heorshemaysitfortwoadditional
retakeswithintheiryearofeligibility.Heorshemustwaitatleast45calendardaysinbetween
examattempts.Incaseofnosuccessafterthetworetakeattempts,anapplicantmustwaitayear
beforereapplyingtotheprogram.

8.9
ApplicationExpiration/CandidacyDuration
Applicantsadvancedtocandidacyareplacedinactivestatusandhaveuptoone(1)yeartotake
andpasstheexam.Theone(1)yeartimeperiodbeginsontheformalnotificationdateof
advancement.Extensionsofactivestatusbeyondtheone(1)yeartimeperiodmaybegrantedfor
reasonsbeyondthecontrolofthecandidatethatadverselyimpactthecandidatesabilitytotake
theexamsuchasamedicalcondition,deploymentformilitaryservice,etc.Thecandidatemust
makeawrittenrequestforanextensionandattachappropriatesupportingdocumentation
verifyingthereasonfortheextensionforCMCIsreviewandapproval.

8.10
ExpiredApplicationProcessing(Reapplication):
Candidateswhodonottakeandpasstheexamwithintherequiredone(1)yeartimeperiodor
didnotreceiveanextensionfromCMCIwillbeplacedintoasuspendedstatus.Acandidate
mayremaininsuspendedstatusforuptofouryearsfollowingthecommencementofsuspended
status.
Tochangefromsuspendedstatustoactivestatus,theQualificationCriteriaforcandidacymust
haveremainedunchangedfromthetimeofsubmissionoftheoriginalapplication.Inaddition,
candidatesmust:
1) Payaprocessingfeeintheamountequalto25%oftheapplicationfeeatthetimeof
therequestforreactivation.
2) VerifythatthesuspendedapplicationmeetsallcurrentRICRequirementswithout
modification.Afullapplicationfeeshallbepaidwithanymodifiedornew
application.
3) ObtainCMCIapproval

Anycandidateinsuspendedstatuswhodoesnotreactivateandpasstheexamwithinfive(5)
yearsoftheformalnotificationdateofadvancementwillberequiredtosubmitanewapplication
andallrequiredfees.

9.0
CERTIFICATION
Thecertificationtermrunsforthreeyears.Renewalisbasedoncontinuedprofessionalpractice
andademonstrationofcommitmenttoandpersonalgrowthintheindustry.Thereisa$200
recertificationfeeforCCMs,whichoccurseverythreeyearsontheanniversaryoftheapplicants
becomingcertified.

10.0
RECERTIFICATION
Certificationisanongoingcommitmentthatbeginswithpassingtheexam.TheCMCIBoardof
GovernorsbelievesthatallCCMsshouldbeactivelyinvolvedinandcommittedtotheCM
profession.Tothisendtheyhaveidentified2areasforrecertification:

11.0
LOSSOFCERTIFICATION
Onescertificationcanberevokedbynotcomplyingwiththerecertificationrequirements,failing
topaytherenewalfee,orbreachingthecodeofethics.

11.1 Noncompliancewithrecertificationrequirements
CCMswhohavenotacquiredsufficientmaintenancepointstoberecertifiedbytheendoftheir
anniversarymonthwillbenotifiedinwritingthattheyaresuspendedfromusingtheCCM
designationandwillnolongerbelistedasaCCMintheRegistryorotherpublicationsuntilthe
CCMmeetsthoserequirements.

11.2 Failuretopaytheannualrenewalfee
CCMswhohavenotremittedtheir$200recertificationfeearesubjecttosuspensionfromusing
theCCMdesignation.

11.3
BreachingCodeofEthics
AnyindividualfoundtohavebreachedtheCodeofEthicsissubjecttorevocationofCCMstatus.
Informationonacertifiedprofessionalsupportingacomplaintofnoncompliancemaybe
submittedfromanysource.AcomplaintinwritingreceivedbytheCertificationProgramwillbe
referredtotheBoardofGovernorsforinvestigation.
FollowingreceiptofanofficialnoticeofnoncompliancefromtheCertificationProgram,theCCM
willhavea30dayperiodinwhichcorrectiveactionorresponsetothesatisfactionoftheBoardof
Governorsmaybetaken.Ifanappropriateresponsehasnotbeenreceivedortherequired
correctiveactionhasnotbeentaken,theGovernorswillnotifytheCCMofrevocationofthe
certification.CMCIreservestherighttorequestsupportinginformationfromanyapplicant
seekingrecertification.Aspartoftherecertificationprocess,randomauditswillbeperformed.

12.0 CODEOFETHICS
TheCMAABoardofDirectorsofCMAAhasadoptedthefollowingCodeofProfessionalEthics
oftheConstructionManagerandrecommendsthatitbeacceptedandsupportedbytheCM
industryasaguidetotheexecutionoftheindividualCMsprofessionalduties:

Asaprofessionalengagedinthebusinessofprovidingconstructionmanagementservices,andasamember
oftheCMprofession,Iagreetoconductmyselfinmybusinessinaccordancewiththefollowing:

12.1. Clientservice
Iwillservemyclientswithhonesty,integrity,candor,andobjectivity.Iwillprovidemyserviceswith
competence,usingreasonablecare,skill,anddiligenceconsistentwiththeinterestsofmyclientandthe
applicablestandardofcare.
12.2 RepresentationofQualifications.
IwillonlyacceptassignmentsforwhichIamqualifiedbymyeducation,training,professionalexperience
andtechnicalcompetence,andIwillassignstafftoprojectsinaccordancewiththeirqualificationsand
commensuratewiththeservicestobeprovided.
12.3
StandardsofPractice.
Iwillfurnishmyservicesinamannerconsistentwiththeestablishedandacceptedstandardsofthe
professionandwiththelawsandregulationsthatgovernitspractice.

12.4
FairCompetition.
Iwillbuildmyprofessionalreputationonthebasisofmydirectexperienceandserviceprovided,andIwill
competefairlyandrespectfullywithmyprofessionalcolleagues.

12.5
ConflictsofInterest.
Iwillseektoavoidanyandallconflictsofinterestandwillimmediatelyacknowledgeanyinfluencesand
offertowithdrawfromanyassignmentwhenanyactualconflictexiststhatmayimpairmyobjectivityor
integrityintheserviceofmyclients.
12.6
FairCompensation.
Iwillnegotiatefairlyandopenlywithmyclientsinestablishingabasisforcompensation,andIwill
chargefeesandexpensesthatarereasonableandcommensuratewiththeservicestobeprovidedandthe
responsibilitiesandriskstobeassumed.
12.7 ReleaseofInformation.
Iwillreleasepublicstatementsthataretruthfulandobjective,andIwillkeepinformationandrecords
confidentialwhenappropriateandprotecttheproprietaryinterestsofmyclientsandprofessional
colleagues.
12.8
PublicWelfare.
Iwillnotparticipateinanyracial,sexual,orpoliticaldiscriminationrelatedtoanyassignmentImay
undertake.Iwillavoidanyconductthatwouldbeconsideredunethicalorwillinterfereorconflictwithany
laws,statues,orregulations,andIwillupholdthesafety,health,andwelfareofthepublicinthe
performanceofmyprofessionalduties.
12.9
ProfessionalDevelopment.
Iwillcontinuetodevelopmyprofessionalknowledgeandcompetencyasapractitioner,andIwill
contributetotheadvancementofCMpracticeasaprofessionbyfosteringresearchandeducationand
throughtheencouragementofsubordinatesandfellowpractitioners.
12.10 IntegrityoftheProfession.

certificatesandcertifications.AccreditedbytheAmericanNationalStandardsInstitute(ANSI),
ourcertificationisbasedontheCMAAStandardsofPractice(SOP).Whilesomemayarguethat
theyhaveextensiveexperienceinConstructionManagement,theymaynotnecessarilyknow,
understand,orapplyCMAAsSOP.ThisiswhattheInstitutecertifies:Itisaparticularsetof
professionalstandardsintheareaofConstructionManagementbasedonbestpractices,
formulatedbytheAssociation,translatedintoassessmentinstrumentsbytheInstitute,and

TheCCMprogramwasthefirstintheconstructionprofessionaltobeaccreditedbyANSI,the

Practice.Theapplicationisnotaproformasteptocandidacy.Advancementtocandidacy

Introduction
TheCertifiedConstructionManager(CCM)program,administeredbytheConstructionManagement
CertificationInstitute(CMCI),isafastgrowingidentifierofaprofessionalpractitionerintheconstruction
managementindustry.Thenumberofindividualssubmittingthemselvesforcandidacyisrapidly
increasing.Presently,over1225constructionmanagershaveearnedtheCCMdesignation,andmore
than150areintheprocessofapplicationorpreparingtositfortheexamination.

However,theCCMapplicationprocesscanbeoneofthemostformidableactivitiesthatanapplicantcan
endure.First,applicantsmusteffectivelydemonstratetoCMCItheirexperienceandtheresponsibilities
theyhavehadinoverallprogram/constructionmanagement.Secondly,applicantsmustclearly
demonstratetheleadershiprolesandresponsibilitiesthatwillqualifyforcandidacybythedefinitionof
responsibleincharge,obtainlettersofrecommendations,andultimatelytakeacomprehensive
examination.Ifthatisnotenough,theapplicantisfacedwiththechallengeofclearlyrepresentingtothe
CMCIandanindependent,objectiveCMCIBoardofGovernorsthattheireducation,experience,and
leadershiprolemeetsthequalifyingrequirementsoftheCCMprogram.Theapplicationgoesunder
detailedscrutinybytheCMCIBoardofGovernors,ofwhomallareCCMprofessionalsandhold
responsiblepositionswithCMrelatedemployers.

UnderestimatingImportantElements
Unfortunately,manyoftheapplicantsunderestimatethemostimportantpartsoftheapplicationeven
thoughtheyareclearlyemphasizedintheApplicationGuidelines.Applicantscommonlyrelyheavilyon
theirprofessionaleducationandtheirparticipationonmajorcomplexprojects.Otherapplicantshave
beenfoundtoglossovertheimportantelementsoftheapplication,thinkingitsomewhatunimportant,
andsupporttheirqualifyingexperiencebytheirjobtitleorcompanyposition.Thesealonearenot
qualifiersthatmeettheCCMcriteriaofprofessionalism.

Mostmistakesaremadebecauseapplicantsdontfollowordontunderstandtheapplicationinstructions.
Unfortunately,thesecommonerrorsmaycausetheapplicationtoberejected;thesemistakeswill
significantlydelaytheprocessingoftheapplicationorreceivingafavorablerecommendationfromthe
BoardofGovernorstobeadvancedtocandidacyorboth.SomeofthemostcommonmistakesonCCM
applicationscanbesummarizedasfollows:

Incompleteprojectdocumentation.
Incompleteapplicationinformation.
Inabilitytodetailtheirqualifyingrolesandresponsibilities.

Althoughtherecanbemanyothermistakesandshortcomingsthatinterrupttheapplicationprocess,
therearethreeerrorsthatcanbefatalifnotdocumentedanddemonstratedclearlytotheBoardof
Governors.Thesefatalflawsarethedocumentationforresponsibleincharge,theCMrelateddegree,
andcleardocumentationthattheapplicanthasthequalifyingexperienceasanadvocatefortheowner
andtheproject.

QualifyingResponsibleInChargeExperience
TobeadvancedtocandidacyforCCM,theapplicantmustclearlydocument48monthsofresponsiblein
chargeroleofdecisionmakingthatdirectlyimpactedthesuccessfulcompletionoftheprojectandwasdirectly
responsibleinchargeofconstructionmanagementservicesandforprotectingtheinterestsoftheproject/owner.
Oftenapplicantsappeartohavetherequisiteknowledgeandresponsibleinchargeexperiencenecessary
toqualifyforCCMcandidacy;however,theydonotprovidetherequireddocumentationinits
completenessinthesectiononProjectExperienceDocumentationtosupporttheresponsibleincharge
experience.Ifthereisonemostimportantpartoftheapplication,itisthissection,alongwiththe
applicantsreferencelettersthatsubstantiatesthisexperience.

ThisresponsibleinchargeroleisbestdeterminedwhenaCCMapplicantclearlydemonstratesCM
experienceasanextensionofstafftotheOwnerandhasbeenresponsibleforanentireprojectwithpre
planning,design,construction,engineeringandmanagementfunctionsthatcanassurethebestpossible
projectoutcomenomatterwhattypeofprojectdeliverymethodwasused.

Acommonmisunderstandingbysomeapplicantsisthattheresponsibleinchargerequirementcanbe
fulfilledbyfocusedspecialtyservicessuchasadministrativeprojectmanagement,projectadministrator,
systemsmanagementorothersupportservicesthatcanbeadiversifiedpartoftheconstruction
managementorprojectteam.However,responsibilitiesasaprojectteamsupportmember,suchas
AdministrativeProjectManager,eventhoughtheresponsibilitiescanbecomprehensive,donotinitself
fulfilltherequirementsofaCCMcandidacy.

Themostsuccessfuldocumentationtosupport48monthsofresponsibleinchargeexperiencegenerally
relatestobuildingconstructionorconstructionmanagementexperienceasrepresentedbytheCMAA
ConstructionManagementStandardsofPractice.Specifically,CCMcertificationrequiresmanagement
responsibilityinmultifunctionalareasasrepresentedbytheCCMQualificationMatrix.Inaddition,by
grantingcertification,CMCIrepresentstothegeneralpopulationofclientsandconstructionusersthat
theindividualhasdemonstratedthecomprehensiveknowledgeandskillsetsneededtoplan,direct,and
manageaCMprojectand/orprojectorganization.

TheCMAAConstructionManagementStandardsofPracticeisclearabouttheleadershiproleexpectedof
professionalconstructionmanagersoverseeingtheintegratedsystemsandmultipledisciplinesthat
composeaCMteam.Forexample,aqualifyinglevelofresponsibilitieswillincludeworkinconstruction
projectcontrolanddevelopment,siteplanning,design,constructionmethods,constructionmaterials,
valueanalysis,costestimating,scheduling,contractadministration,accounting,businessandfinancial
management,safety,buildingcodesandstandards,inspectionprocedures,engineeringandarchitectural
sciences,mathematics,statisticsandinformationtechnology.

Anothercommonmistakeisthelackofspecificityindemonstratingtheresponsibleinchargerolefor
eachspecificprojectthatisusedtorepresenttherequired48months.Itisimperativethatspecific
responsibilitiesbefurnishedforeachphaseofeachproject.Providingaonetimesummaryintendedtofitall
projectexperiencesisnotsatisfactory,doesnotcomplywiththeapplicationrequirements,andwillnot
passtheBoardofGovernorsreview.

TheCMCIGovernorswatchforthedocumentationofprojectexperiencesthatinvolvemultipletrade
typesandareasonablycomplexbuiltenvironment.Inthesizeandscopesectionoftheapplication,the
applicantshouldexplainasclearlyaspossible,andindetail,theportionoftheprojectinwhichheorshe
wasresponsibleincharge.TheBoardofGovernorsreviewerswillusetheirjudgment,basedonthe
informationprovidedbytheapplicant,todeterminethattheprojectissufficientlycomplextoqualify.

Itisessentialthattheprojectdocumentationexplainanddemonstratethattheexperiencemeetsthebasic
definitionofresponsibleincharge.Mostimportantly,thequestionmustbesatisfiedthattheapplicants
decisionmakingresponsibilitieshaddirectimpactonthesuccessfulcompletionoftheproject,andthat
theapplicantwasdirectlyresponsibleinchargeforconstructionmanagementservicesandforprotecting
theinterestsoftheprojectandowner.

Forexample,inthecaseofthepreconstructionphaserelatedtodesignandprocurement,theapplicantis
expectedtodemonstratethatheorshehasdirectlycontributedtothosephasesfromapositionasaCM
anddoesnotrequirethattheybeindirectcontrolofdesignandprocurementinthesephases.The
applicantisexpectedtobeincontrolofmanagingtheprocess,nottheactualdesignand/orprocurement
work.Anotherexample:Intheconstructionphase,theapplicantmustdemonstratethatheorshe
functionedinaleadershiproleandwasinchargeofaprojectwithresponsibilitiestoenhancethecontrol
oftime,cost,andquality.Theapplicantmusthaveprotectedtheinterestsoftheprojectownerthrough
hisorheractionsinprovidingtheCMservices.

The48monthresponsibleinchargeexperienceperiodrequiresactualdailyresponsibleincharge
experienceandinvolvementwiththelistedprojects.Ingeneral,corporateprincipaloversightrolesdo
notsatisfythisrequirement,butactiveinvolvementasaProjectExecutivemaydoso.

TheCMRelatedDegree
AcommonmistakebysomeapplicantsissubstitutingaCMdiplomaforaCMrelateddegree.CMCI
definesthesedegreestoincludemostcommonlyArchitecture,Engineering,ConstructionManagement,
orConstructionScience/Engineering.ACMDiploma,eventhoughfromareputableuniversityorother
institution,isacomplimenttotheapplicantspersonaldevelopmentinCMservices,butthesenondegree
programsalonedonotmeetthefouryearcurriculumcriterionestablishedbyCMCI.Thequalifying
academicexperienceisexpectedtoincludestudiesinprojectorganizationsandmanagement,scheduling,
andimplementationandexecution,costcontrolapplications,constructability,valueengineering,contract
management,andconstructioninvestmentsandfinanceasgenerallyaccreditedbygoverningbodiessuch
astheAmericanCouncilforConstructionEducationortheNationalArchitecturalAccreditationBoard.

WhentheapplicantdoesnothaveaCMrelateddegree,thedocumentationmustsupportaminimumof
96months,oreightyears,ofgeneraldesign,construction,engineering,orconstructionmanagement
experienceinadditiontothe48monthsofresponsibleinchargeexperienceneededtoqualifyforCCM
candidacy.Thisqualifyingexperienceisnottobeunderestimatedinimportance.Generaldesignand
constructionexperiencequalifyingasasubstitutionforaCMrelateddegreeisexpectedtoincludeproject

relatedservicesthatemploytheapplicationsandtechniquesofdisciplineddesign,constructionand
planning.

Morespecifically,thisexperienceisdefinedasrelatedtothedesignandconstructionprocess,exampled
bestasrelatedtobuildings,roads,bridges,orotherbuiltstructures.Constructionmanagementhas
clearlyevolvedfromarchitecture,civilandrelatedengineering,generalcontracting,andproject
managementofthebuiltenvironment.Qualifyingexperiencemustincludeworkinginanenvironment
ofcoordinatingandexecutingprojectsthroughtheassemblyofmaterials,equipment,budgets,schedules,
contracts,andsafetyofemployeesandthegeneralpublic.Experiencefocusedonspecificsystems,
electronics,orcomputertechnologies,eventhoughrelatedtotheconstructionindustry,doesnotfulfill
therequiredexperienceandcriteriaasqualifyingsubstitutionsfortheCMdegree.

Itisveryimportantthattheapplicantclarifyanddistinguishclearlythequalifyingexperiencefor
responsibleinchargecomparedtothegeneraldesign/constructionexperience.Atotalof144monthsof
nonoverlappingexperiencemustbeclearlydocumented.

ACCMasAdvocatefortheOwner
CCMshouldbeanadvocateoftheProjectandnottheOwner.TheProjectencompassestheOwner,
designer,builderandotherprojectteammembersandaCMisobligatedtobefairtoallparties. A
commonshortcominginapplicationsisnotbeingclearabouttheCMcontractroleandrelationshipwith
theownerwhendocumentingtheprojectexperiencesasresponsibleincharge.Manydifferent
approachescanbeusedtosuccessfullydeliveraproject.
Additionally,theapplicantsreferencesmustcertifythattheapplicanthasfunctionedinaCMrolewith
responsibilitytoenhancethecontroloftime,costandqualityonthequalifyingprojectorprojectswhile
theownersinterestshavebeenacceptablyprotected.
Manypublicandprivateentitiesprovideconstructionmanagementservicesusinginhouseresources,
withorwithoutathirdpartyconstructionmanager.Suchexperienceisgenerallyacceptableas
responsibleinchargeexperienceaslongasallothercriteriaaremet.

AFinalNote:DemonstratingYourCommitment
TheCCMdesignationisrepresentativeofanindividualscommitmenttoexcellence.This
accomplishmentisabenefittoboththeCMindustryandthepublicatlarge,butthefirststepisto
