Hi, my name is Michael. This time, we


are going to learn how to talk about
where buildings, places and different
locations are. To do so, we are going to
learn how to use prepositions of place
and the expression there is/are.
Help me tell Miss Robinson what she
can find in her new neighborhood!

Linda: Hi, Michael! This is me again, Linda. How are you?
Michael Peterson: Good morning, Miss Robinson! Im great, thanks!
Linda: Good! Im calling you because I need to know more about the
neighborhood in which my new apartment is.
Michael Peterson: Of course! What information do you want to know?
Linda: Well, I want to know what I can find in the neighborhood.
Michael Peterson: No problem! First, lets check a map of the neighborhood to
see what it has and where these places are located.

Linda:That sounds great! I love shopping! Tell me, does it have any restaurants?
Michael Peterson: Yes, it does. There is a big Italian restaurant on the corner of
Second Street and Central Avenue.
Linda: Excellent! I like Italian food a lot. Are there any gyms? I also like doing
exercise.
Michael Peterson: Erm let me check! Yes, there is a gym right next to the bank.
It is open 24 hours a day
Linda: Thats really good! I can go there every morning to do some exercise. What
about bakeries?
Michael Peterson: There is a nice bakery near the hospital. You can get fresh
bread there.

Linda: Great! What other advantages does it have?


Michael Peterson: Well, there is a police station next to to the bank so the
neighborhood is very safe. There are also a shopping mall, a hospital and a a
huge library.
Linda: That sounds great! I think that neighborhood is very convenient for me. I
like it a lot!
Linda: Thank you very much, Michael. This neighborhood is definitely a very
good place for me.
Michael Peterson: Thank you for choosing us to help you with the moving. I hope
you have a good time living in Medelln

BANK
A bank is a place in which you can deposit and withdraw money. You can also
put your savings in it. There is always a security guard at the entrance.
BAKERY
A bakery is a place where you can buy bread, cookies, cakes and other pastry
products. It always smells good.
LIBRARY
A library y is a place where you can read all sorts of books. You can go there to do
some research or homework. It is a very quiet place.

DRUGSTORE
A drugstore is a place where you buy medicine and other products. If you need
an injection, a pill or some syrup for a bad cough you can go there.
MOVIE THEATER
A movie theater or cinema is a place where you can watch horror or action films.
You usually go there with your friends or family. Its very fun!
BUTCHERS
A butchers is a place where you can buy meat, eggs and other dairy products!
SHOPPING MALL
A shopping mall is a large place where you can find all kinds of stores such as
clothing stores, shoes stores, banks, book shops, etc. Many people go there to
buy things for themselves or gifts for others.
Wow! This neighborhood is really convenient; it has a lot of interesting places
such as bakeries, shopping malls, drugstores and many others.
I bet it is very similar to your neighborhood. There is a place for everything you
need.

EXPRESSING EXISTENCE
In English, people use there is or there are to indicate that something exits or to
indicate its location.
People use there is to talk about the existence or location of a singular object,
and there are to talk about the existence of several objects.
Lets check some examples!

There is a drugstore in Lindas neighborhood.


There are two restaurants in Lindas neighborhood.
There is a library in Lindas neighborhood.
There are three bakeries in Lindas neighborhood.

If we want to express that something does not exist or is not located in a certain
place, we normally use the negative form of the verb in plural form.

PREPOSITIONS OF PLACE
Now, lets learn how to describe the location of a place. To do so, we need to
check how to use some prepositions of place.
Prepositions of place are words that help us indicate where something is located.
Lets check some of them!
Where is the bank?
The bank is next to the police station.
There is a bank next to the police station.
Where is the movie theater?
The movie theater is behind the restaurant.
There is a movie theater behind the restaurant.
Where is the drugstore?
The drugstore is between the post office and the movie theater.
There is a drugstore between the post office and the movie theater.
Where is the school?
The school is in front of the post office.
There is a school in front of the post office.
Where is Linda?
Linda is in her apartment.

IN
We use in when we are talking about something that is contained or enclosed. It
is used to refer to countries, cities, inside buildings or open areas.
Example:
In the room.
In the hospital.
In Colombia.

Lets analyze

Where is Linda?
Linda is on Central Avenue.

ON
We use on when we are talking about something that is in contact with a surface
or to refer to a place as a location. It is used when talking about streets, solid
surfaces, etc.
Example:
On the bed
On Elm Street
On Grand Avenue
Where is Linda?
Linda is at the bus stop.

AT
We use at when we talk about specific places, common places and addresses.
Example:
At home
At El Dorado airport
At 5345 Street
