In-Depth Look
at China

s we wrap up this months issue, the Coatings World staff is busy

making the final preparations to attend CHINACOAT2013.
For those that are not familiar with CHINACOAT, it is
an annual event alternating between Guangzhou and Shanghai. This
year CHINACOAT will be held November 20-22 at the Shanghai New
International Expo Center. Since its inception in 1996, CHINACOAT has
been a key event for coatings, printing inks and adhesives suppliers who
wish to enter, expand and consolidate their positions in the Chinese market.
We have dedicated considerable space in this issue to covering the
Chinese paint and coatings market, since this issue will be distributed at
the Show.
Contributing writer, Don Watson examines the current state of
the Chinese economy in his article China: Will it Survive the Global
Downturn (pg. 55). In this article Watson predicts that the Chinese economy will eventually weather the current global downturn, but cautions that
its leaders must choose wisely and implement true economic measures. For
certain, the economic and social reforms that have started in China must
continue if China is to survive long term and overtake the U.S. Economy
and until the bulk of its population enjoy the benefits of Chinas remarkable growth over the past 30 years there is concern for the countrys its long
term stability, Watson reported.
Investments in China Continue (pg. 50) takes a look at the investments paint and coatings manufacturers and their suppliers are making in
China. Major investments have been made by AkzoNobel, Axalta and PPG,
just to name a few.
If you are planning on attending this years CHINACOAT our
CHINACOAT2013 Preview (pg. 61) will give you a good starting point
for getting yourself organized.
As this issue went to press, a total of 920 exhibitors from 33 countries/
regions were booked to showcase their products and services in an exhibit
area of 60,000 square meters. There were a total of 186 new exhibitors
this year. The largest exhibiting group is from China, with 649 Chinese
suppliers signed up to provide international visitors with a convenient way
to source Chinese products in one place.
Be sure to bring your walking shoes, as there are six exhibit zones featuring international and China raw materials, machinery and instrumentation; powder coatings technology and UV/EB products and services!
If you plan on making the trip to Shanghai this year please be sure to

(From left:) Olivier Homolle, president of BASF

France, and Yannick Pichot from BASF Coatings
in Clermont de lOise, France, received the Pierre
Potier Award on behalf. It was handed over by
Frances Minister for Economic Regeneration, Arnaud Montebourg, and Yves Chauvin, winner of the
Nobel Prize in chemistry 2005. BASF was awarded
for its innovative paint application for car bodies
Integrated Process II.

BASF Receives the Pierre

Potier Award in France
BASF was awarded the Pierre Potier
prize 2013 within the Innovative
Processes category for its automotive paint application process called
Integrated Process II (IP II). This process for waterborne paint application to

car bodies is characterized by its particularly efficient and ecological procedure. The prize rewards innovations
in the field of chemicals and promotes
sustainable development. It was created eight years ago at the instigation
of the French Federation for Chemical
Sciences (FFC) and French Chemical
Industries Union (UIC) and placed under the supervision of Frances Minister
for Economic Regeneration.
The innovation of the IP II consists
in eliminating the second paint layer,
the primer coat and its baking phase. In
their place, two thinner coats are applied

directly to the cathodic e-coat without an

intermediate drying phase. The coating is
resistant to stone chipping and UV rays.
This approach has become established
at new automotive paint shops. BASF
develops new processes which are more
economic in terms of energy consumption and quantity of raw materials. The
Integrated Process II allows reducing the
quantity of paint used. It also helps to
decrease the CO2 emissions and energy
consumption by up to 20 percent, explained Yannick Pichot, BASF technical
manager basecoat color and formulation
in Clermont de lOise, France. CW

ACAs PaintCare Pilot

Program in Oregon Marks
its Third Anniversary
ACAs PaintCare pilot program in Oregon
marked its third anniversary in July, and
recently submitted its annual report for
the program to the Oregon Department
of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The
report details all the operational aspects
and successes of the programs third year,
including collection infrastructure, volume and disposition of paint collected,
program costs, and education and outreach activities.

In its third year, PaintCare maintained 100 collection sites, consisting

of both municipal and retail outlets,
with some new sites being added in
previously underserved areas. With
PaintCares infrastructure, 95 percent
of Oregon resident have access to a
permanent site within 15 miles of their
home. In addition, PaintCare continued its large volume direct pick-up
program for painting contractors, universities and other entities with large
volumes of postconsumer paint 31
pick-ups were conducted. As expected,
collection volumes increases moderately from Year 2, with 580,693 gallons of postconsumer paint collected.
This takes the Oregon program to over
1.5 million gallons collected since its
launch. As in previous years, most of
the latex was recycled into new recycled-content paint, and almost all
of the alkyd paint was used for fuel
blending. An independent financial
audit deemed the program financially
sound, with approximately $950,000

In 2009, Oregon became the first state

in the nation to enact a law requiring paint

manufacturers to safely manage leftover

and contractor painting jobs. This historic
product stewardship legislation responds

to the issue of managing leftover paint the largest component of local household
hazardous waste collection programs.

BASF Coatings Protect New Wind Turbine in Hamburg

Since mid-August, Hamburgs port has hosted a new inland wind
turbine whose rotor blades are nearly 60 meters long. BASFs
RELEST coatings make a crucial contribution to the longevity
of the turbine. They ensure high surface quality and protect the
glass-fiber reinforced plastic rotor blades from enormous stresses brought about by weathering, erosion and UV radiation, for
example. The turbine manufactured by Nordex has a 141-meter
high tower. The towers height, which is extraordinary for Hamburg, makes it especially productive.
The N117/2400 turbine provides a container terminal at the
port with up to 8.7 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year.
This is equivalent to the annual energy needs of nearly 2,000
four-person households in Germany. The rule of thumb is, the
higher the wind turbines tower, the greater the yield, which increases by 0.7 to 1 percent per meter of height. This means that
the wind turbines height, which is above Hamburgs average,
will pay off in terms of both economic and ecological efficiency.

The applicability and properties of BASFs coatings complement our technology very well. Pooling our competence allows
us to achieve first-class surface performance that is reproducible
and consistent.
Partnership for sustainable energy recovery worldwide
The partnership between Nordex and BASF was established in
June 2008. Nordex has installed multi-megawatt turbines using BASFs RELEST Wind industrial coatings product group at
many wind parks throughout Germany, for example in the states
of Hesse, Bavaria and Schleswig-Holstein. The two companies
have also teamed up for wind-turbine construction internationally, in countries such as Sweden, South Africa and Turkey. One
of the largest joint projects is the wind park installed in the U.S.
in 2012 that comprises 34 turbines. The next project to be undertaken by Nordex and BASF is a new medium-wind system.
The installation at the Hamburg port starts between late 2013
and early 2014.

Rotor blades have to withstand extreme stresses

In order for wind energy to pay off, it must be guaranteed that
the turbines production will be efficient but also that it will have
a service life of at least 20 years, said Wolfgang Kranig, head of
Postcoatings at BASF. For this reason, our paints are designed
both to provide efficient coating and to fully protect the rotor
blade surface from the enormous environmental stresses. At
speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour at the blade tips, rain,
snow and hail attack the surfaces, which can lead to erosion. In
order for the rotor blades to be as aerodynamic as possible, the
surface finish must also be smooth and flawless.
Using robots to speed up coating
Prior to assembly in Hamburg, the turbines rotor blades were
coated in Rostock. In a highly automated process, Nordex applies BASF gelcoat and topcoat to the surfaces. The gelcoat
performs the function of a safety coat to make the finish resistant to impacts. The topcoat provides surface qualities such
as smooth flow and mat appearance. This prevents problems
such as airplane pilots being blinded by the reflecting sunlight.
The paintline in Rostock is set up to handle a rotor blade length
of 60 meters. Two application robots apply the coating simultaneously. Using robots makes application 50 percent faster
than application by conventional methods. The process has a
number of advantages. The uniform layer thickness allows us to
use materials economically, which makes it easy on the environment, explained Felix Losada, press spokesperson at Nordex.

manufacturers, and in July 2010,

the paint industry kicked off the
PaintCare program in Oregon to
reduce paint waste, increase reuse and recycling, and safely dispose of
remaining unusable paint. Costs for safely managing leftover paint are incorporated in the purchase price of new paint.
ACAs PaintCare program is at the
forefront of the producer responsibility
movement, in which Oregon is a national
leader. Producer responsibility means
manufacturers take responsibility for reducing the lifecycle impacts of a product,
including internalizing the end-of-life
management costs, rather than having
government set up and fund collection
programs for waste products. In response
to the success of the Oregon Program,
legislation mandating the creation of
the PaintCare program has been enacted in six additional states since 2009:
California (2010), Connecticut (2011),
Rhode Island (2012), Minnesota (2013),
Vermont (2013) and Maine (2013). The
California program launched in October
2012, the Connecticut program launched
in July 2013, and program operations will
commence in Rhode Island, Vermont, and
Minnesota by July 2014 and in Maine by
July 2015.
The PaintCare program is expected
to result in the proper management of
millions of gallons of leftover paint each
year. Paint recycling is now more convenient throughout participating states
and many communities that were previously underserved for household hazardous waste services have a PaintCare
drop-off site available in their area for
paint. Partnering government programs
are realizing a direct financial savings
as PaintCare covers the cost of paint
transportation and recycling from their
programs.
Following submittal of PaintCares
inaugural report in 2011, DEQ recommended to the Oregon Legislature that
the PaintCare pilot program be made
permanent, echoed by ACA. This July, the
Oregon Legislature passed legislation to
repeal the sunset date on the states fouryear pilot industry paint stewardship program, and made the program permanent.

Results of U.S. Architectural Coatings Industry Research Report Which Compared Business
Trends in August 2013 vs. August 2012
Each month, Northcoast Research surveys a large sample of
paint retailers throughout the U.S. to get a sense for current
business trends. Please note that of the three primary architectural coatings channels (paint stores, home centers, and retail
distributors), this survey is primarily reflective of the distributor
channel which tends to see volume growth less than the industry; therefore, we view the results as a directional indicator more
so than absolute industry volumes. For inquiries regarding this
report please contact Kevin Hocevar at 216-468-6924 or kevin.
hocevar@northcoastresearch.com.
Architectural Coatings Sales
Volumes Up 2.5% in August vs. Last Year
According to industry participants, average sales volumes in
August rose 2.5% year-over-year following a slight slowdown in
growth of 0.8% in July, and momentum picked back up where
it left off from the 2.3% growth seen in June. Coatings volumes
improved in August as a result of underlying strength in the U.S.
housing market coupled with more normalized weather conditions compared to challenging weather patterns seen throughout most of 2013. Overall, 68% of respondents witnessed an increase in volumes vs. only 18% that saw volumes decline, which
averaged out to 2.5% volume growth and a net increase of 50%.
Price of Paint from Suppliers
Paint Prices Up vs. Last Year but Growth Slows
57% of contacts noted a year-over-year increase in the cost of
a gallon of paint from suppliers in the month of August as our
paint price index increased 1.0%. This compares to a year-overyear increase of 1.5% and 2.1% in July and June, respectively.
Price increases issued by paint manufacturers in 2012 as a result
of recovering raw material inflation are starting to anniversary
and thus year-over-year price increases are becoming less pronounced, a trend that is likely to continue.

We believe the trend of flat pricing will be sustained as 86% of

respondents reported that there have been no price increase
notifications issued from paint suppliers at this time.
Raw Materials TiO2 Prices appear to be Bottoming Out
Throughout 2013, titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been on a downward trend but our research suggests a floor is being reached.
Propylene prices have been rebounding since April; however,
they are still below highs seen in February. TiO2 manufacturers have recently issued price hike announcements although our
data suggests these increases are not sticking. With that said,
TiO2 inventories are beginning to become more balanced and
as utilization rates increase, we would not be surprised to see
successful price increases by the end of 2013.
Paint Inventory Levels Inventories Remain Fairly Balanced
81% of respondents stated that current paint inventory levels
at their location are in-line with current business conditions and
they are maintaining current levels of purchasing activity. Only
7% of contacts noted that current paint inventory levels are too
high while the remaining 13% of participants revealed that paint
inventory levels were too low in August. Overall, we believe that
inventories are well aligned with current demand levels.
3 Month Outlook
Outlook Strong with Improvement from July
Our proprietary Architectural Coatings Outlook Index reached a
0.57 for the month of August compared to a level of 0.30 in July.
Please note that the highest possible reading is +2 (indicating all
contacts have a very positive outlook) and the lowest possible
reading is -2 (indicating all contacts have a very negative outlook. A reading of 0.57 is a positive translation as it represents an
improved outlook from July and indicates that contacts within
the industry maintain a favorable outlook and are anticipating
business to improve from current levels.

International Paint Sees

Significant Uptake in
New Fouling Control
Technologies
International Paint announced that its
two latest hull-coating technologies have
already made a significant impact on the
market within months of their launch in

March. Designed to address the industry issues of predictability in antifouling performance not seen since the days
of tributyltin and the difficult issue of
slime fouling on ships hulls, the two new
technologies - Intercept 8000 LPP and
Intersleek 1100SR - were launched to
improve vessel operating performance,
increase efficiency and reduce fuel costs
and emissions.
Since March 2013, Intersleek 1100SR
has been applied to 52 vessels with 45
contracted and 27 under negotiation
across all main classes, including container, cruise, LNG, Ro-Ro, and tanker
vessels. Intercept 8000 LPP has been applied to 44 vessels with 10 contracted and
a further 32 currently in the pipeline, and
has seen significant take-up with containers, proving the expectation that this
is aimed at being the most eco-efficient
product for this class.
Paul Robbins, marine marketing director at International Paint said: The
popularity of Intercept 8000 LPP and
Intersleek 1100SR so soon after their
launch reflects the growing awareness of
the economic importance of underwater
hull condition, driven by sustained high
bunker prices, lack of liquidity in the
market and increasing environmental
regulation.
Using innovation to meet these challenges, as well as the drive to create more
sustainable operations is rapidly becoming a strategic priority for businesses. It is
also clear that customers want access to
a choice of products, and a broad range
of fouling control solutions that provide
increasing and scalable levels of eco-efficiency benefits depending on their budgets and commitment to sustainability,
he said.
Advanced hull coatings are the most
widely used eco-efficiency technology
within the shipping industry, Robbins
continued. And as a market leader, it is
our mission to introduce new innovations
and technologies that drive operational,
cost and environmental efficiencies for
our customers and help guide them
through the sustainability cycle.
Intercept 8000 LPP is a new patented
biocidal antifouling revolutionizing predictability in hull coating performance

22 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

and Intersleek 1100SR is the industrys

first patented biocide free slime release
technology, helping solving the markets
$28.6 billion slime challenge.
Based on
LUBYON technology,
Intercept 8000 LPP, provides customers with consistent and predictable linear polishing, enabling ship owners and
operators to plan and budget effectively
throughout the dry-dock cycle of the
vessel.
The unique LUBYON technology
gives the coating a superhydrophilic
surface. When the coating is immersed,
the seawater has a lubricating effect, resulting in less friction. This reduces drag
and increases vessel efficiency giving average fuel consumption and associated
emissions savings of 5 percent annually
compared to typical controlled depletion
polymer antifoulings. The coating also
swells on contact with seawater, helping
to smooth out imperfections and potentially further reducing drag.
LUBYON technology also reacts with
seawater via a constant active zone releasing only the optimum amount of biocide
over the scheme life to control fouling
settlement. Critically, this biocide release
rate is largely unaffected by seawater
temperature meaning Intercept 8000
LPP has total trading flexibility and can
operate across global trading routes and
through all seasons. Unlike typical silyl
and metal acrylate antifoulings Intercept
8000LPP replicates the linear polishing of
the benchmark tributyltin based coatings
meaning total predictability with the polishing rate remaining constant throughout the in service period.
Designed for the deep-sea market at
newbuilding and maintenance and repair, the coating has been extensively
monitored with in service performance
validated on multiple vessel types including containers, tankers, bulk carriers and
LNGs representing over 4 million dwt.
In March 2013, International Paint
also launched Intersleek1100SR, the
shipping industrys first biocide free, fluoropolymer technology that tackles the
markets age-old slime challenge. Slime,
a complex, varied and dynamic organism
which begins to colonise surfaces as soon
as they enter the water, has been proven

to have an adverse effect on the

efficiency of all vessel types.
According to a recent formula produced by Michael P.
Schultz, Professor, Department of Naval
Architecture & Ocean Engineering, US
Naval Academy, at todays bunker prices,
the effects of slime potentially costs the
shipping industry 44 million extra tonnes
of bunker fuel, $28.6 billion in additional
fuel costs and an extra 134 million tons
of CO2 emissions every year.
Designed for all commercial vessels
even when slow or ultra slow steaming,
new Intersleek 1100SR slime release technology delivers outstanding macro and
micro fouling control with good static
resistance even in warm waters. Slime
that can build up during static periods
is released by the movement of the vessel through water. This has been achieved
by the new patented fluoropolymer in
Intersleek 1100SR which has been developed by enhancing the slime resistant

polymer groups used in earlier generations of Intersleek technology creating

new surface chemistry that specifically
resists the adhesion of slime.
The technology is the culmination of
comprehensive research to understand
slime growth. The development of the
new polymer included a three year fundamental research programme involving
a multi-discipline team of marine biologists, hydrodynamicists and polymer scientists. The team was supported by world
renowned independent academic institutes, four years of laboratory testing and
in service, full vessel performance data,
from some of the worlds leading ship
owners and operators.

Germany, AkzoNobel has informed employees of its intention to streamline its

organizational structure in the country.
The proposals involve reducing the
number of office locations from eight
to three by the summer of 2014. The
three offices will be based in Cologne,
Hamburg and Stuttgart.
By bringing office-based management
and supporting staff together in fewer locations and better aligning them with the
needs of our businesses in Germany, we
aim to improve our operational effectiveness as well as lowering overheads, said
AkzoNobel Executive Committee member Werner Fuhrmann.
Currently, office employees working
for diverse business units and the country organization are based in eight office
locations spread across Germany. This
highly fragmented footprint is the result
of various mergers and acquisitions that
have occurred during the years.
AkzoNobels main offices in Germany
will be sited at a new location in Cologne,
providing workspaces for approximatley
250 people. Sales offices in the north and
south of the country will be consolidated
in Hamburg and Stuttgart. The company
expects to have completed the move by
summer 2014.
The need to further streamline our
organizational structure in Germany has
become increasingly clear in light of recent
developments, continued Fuhrmann.
This June, AkzoNobels Decorative
Paints business in Germany announced
plans to divest its network of more than
70 stores for professional painters, having determined it can better cater to this
market by focusing distribution through
independent wholesalers.
In August, AkzoNobel agreed to sell its
Building Adhesives business to Sika AG.
Nearly two thirds of Building Adhesives
approximately 550 personnel are based
in Germany. Going forward, AkzoNobel
will align the supporting management
and staff functions for the country with
the organizations changing dimensions.
When completed, these developments
will result in a reduction of more than 25
percent in the total number of personnel
employed by AkzoNobel in Germany to
approximately 2,600.CW

New Functional Coatings

Provide Under-Appreciated
Business Opportunities
Advances in materials science and nanotechnology have created several new
functionalities in coatings, going beyond
their original basic protective and decorative attributes, according to a recent
report from Lux Research. However,
mismatched perceptions among coating
developers and potential customers still
remain, slowing rapid market adoption.
Functional coatings offering benefits
such as antimicrobial in medicine, selfhealing in infrastructure, hydrophobic in
electronics, and photocatalytic ihn construction deliver value over and above
the basic decorative and protective
functions.
Functional coatings can significantly enhance the value proposition of the
end product but qualification time, cost
and durability requirements often temper these benefits, said Aditya Ranade,
Lux Research senior analyst and the
lead author of the report titled, Beyond
Protection: Scouting for Hot Spots in the
Emerging Functional Coatings Market.
Lux Research analysts examined
four coating functionalities hydrophobic, antimicrobial, photocatalytic, and
self-healing for their applicability and
disruptive potential, and assessed 53 innovative small- to medium-sized developers. Among their findings:
Self-healing is the most disruptive, but
under-appreciated. Elastic clearcoats can
repair scratches to automotive components,
and mechano-responsive polymers offer
game-changing functionality with their ability to anticipate cracks before they appear.
However, most industries rate self-healing
coatings as only moderately disruptive,

pointing to missed opportunities.

Nanogate, Diamon-Fusion show commercial mettle in hydrophobic coatings.
Besides solid technical value, both Nanogate
Technologies
and
Diamon-Fusion
International boast solid partnerships and
positive momentum. The two firms topped
Lux Researchs rating of hydrophobic coating developers, and are strong targets for
aerospace, sporting goods, and automotive
industry players, which see hydrophobic
coatings as impactful.
Strong market pull exists for antimicrobial coatings. Hospitals, food processing facilities, animal housing and
childrens centers have a clear motivation
to reduce spread of diseases. Hence, antimicrobial coatings are seen as highly disruptive in the medical industry.
The report, titled Beyond Protection:
Scouting for Hot Spots in the Emerging
Functional Coatings Market, is part of
the Lux Research Sustainable Building

TMR Analyzes Current

Market Trends of Vinyl
Chloride Monomer
Transparency Market Research (TMR)
has published a report on the vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) market. VCM is a
vital part of petrochemical industry and
is mainly used for producing poly vinyl
chloride (PVC), which is used in the construction and piping industry. It is also
used in electrical, agriculturalvand heath
care sectors. Other minor uses of VCM
include manufacture of ethylene diamine
for the production of resins and manufacture of chlorinated solvents. VCM is produced by hydro-chlorination of acetylene
and the de-hydro-chlorination of ethylene dichloride. This process is polluting
the environment and is highly energy
consuming but the low cost of coal fields
gives an advantage to China.
The global VCM market is expected
to grow at a moderate rate with a single
digit compounded annual growth rate
(CAGR). Asia is the largest consumer of
VCM, contributing more than 50 percent
of the total VCM consumption, followed
by North America and Europe. The high
demand for PVC is the major driving
force for the VCM industry. Almost all the
VCM produced globally is used for PVC
production. The United States is the largest manufacturer of VCM owing to lower
prices of feedstock and technological
development, followed by China. VCM
growth in developing countries is higher
than developed countries as demand for
PVC production is higher due to booming infrastructure in these countries.
Substitution of PVC by traditional
materials is the key driving force for the
VCM industry. But lack of diversification in end-use industries and environmental and health issues will hinder the
growth of industry in the near future.
Technological development can overcome
this barrier and many players in the market have already started taking initiatives
in this regard. Other challenges faced by
industry are volatility of feedstock prices
and competition from other polyolefins

hampering the VCMs capacity addition.

VCM market is highly consolidated as
top five companies contribute more than
half of the total VCM production. Some
of the leading participants in the VCM
industry include Occidental Chemical
Corporation, Dow Chemicals, and
Georgia Gulf Corporation.

HCP alternatives, Hardide-A is

also suitable for internal surfaces
and complex shapes, the company reported.
HCP has been a mainstay of industrial coating in aerospace, heavy equipment, automotive and various other
industries for many years. However, the
hexavalent chrome salts used to produce
HCP pose extreme health and environmental hazards.
The safeguarding EU and U.S. regulations mean chrome plating is incurring
rising costs, extensive regulation and
onerous paperwork. Under EU REACH,
HCP use will be severely restricted and
could be banned. A search has been led
by the aerospace industry to find suitable alternatives.
Hardide-A matches the standard
thickness (50-100 microns) and hardness
(800-1200 Hv) of HCP, simplifying the
transition without need for dimensional
changes or drawing re-design. HCPs intrinsic performance limitations hinder its
more demanding wear applications and
Hardide-A outperforms it in several key
areas. This includes enhanced protection
against corrosion, wear and chemically
aggressive media, enhanced fatigue life
and a non-porous structure.
A number of other alternatives to HCP
are available including thermal spray, in
particular high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF)
and emerging processes such as electroless nickel composite plating, explosive
bonding, electrodeposited nanocrystalline cobalt-phosphorus alloys and physical vapor deposition (PVD) coatings. To
date, HVOF and other spray coatings
have been considered the best available
alternative to HCP. However, Hardide-A
provides several advantages over HVOF
such as versatile geometric compatibility,
corrosion and fatigue resistance and facilitated finishing.

Biocide Regulations Force Producers and

Importers of Coatings to EU to Reformulate

Over the next

Europe face
the prospect of
being forced to

products because
many biocides

he European Union has started implementing a tough new safety regulation

on biocides in coatings and other applications that is likely to result in the withdrawal
from the European market of large numbers of
coatings chemicals for dealing with pests, bacteria and other microorganisms.
Consequently, over the next several years
producers and importers of coatings in Europe
face the prospect of being forced to reformulate
their products because many biocides are no
longer available.
The legislation is the latest example of how
the EU and European governments are continuing to press on with introducing tighter controls

34 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

on chemicals in coatings and other products.

The Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR),
which came into operation on September 1, is
another step towards ensuring that only safe,
authorized products are made available throughout the EU, said Janez Potocnik, environment
commissioner at the European Commission, the
Brussels-based EU executive.
He also asserted that the legislation is a simplification of authorization procedures (which)
will bring significant economic benefits to producers, importers and users of biocides. But his
claims have been greeted with much scepticism
by the coatings and other industries.
The regulation, approved last year by the
European Parliament and Council of Minister
representing EU governments, replaces a biocides directive which was introduced only in
1998 but was found to be ineffective in helping
the review of the safety of hundreds of biocidal
active substances.
October 2013

Europe International Coatings Scene

Under the EUs legislative system
regulations are binding in their entirety and enforced simultaneously in
all of the Unions 28 member states.
Directives are binding in their objectives while it is left to the member
states to decide how to achieve these
through their own laws.
The Commission and the national regulatory authorities in the EU believe that
the regulation is a distinct improvement
on the directive because of the streamlining of authorization procedures at the EU
and national levels and moves to greater
uniformity of risk controls throughout
the Union.
However, these advances are offset
by drawbacks such as the complexity
of the legislation, particularly in the requirements for safety data to be included
in dossiers submitted by companies for
approvals of their products. Coatings
requiring authorization as biocidal products include anti-foulants, anti-bacterial
paints and various preservatives, such as
wood preservatives.
The authorization of existing active substances which is being done
centrally and under the directive was
supposed to be completed in 2010
has now been set to be finished in
2024 because of the difficulties of
evaluating their safety. New active
substances are effectively having to
go through an even more rigorous
authorization procedure.
The
Helsinki-based
European
Chemicals Agency (ECHA), which is
accountable to the Commission, has
taken over the task of dealing with
evaluations of active substances and
centrally approved biocidal products.
This should lead to greater consistency and efficiency in the assessment of
safety dossiers.
Although the new regulation is supposed to be an improvement on the
directive, overall it isnt, said Didier
Leroy, technical director at the European
Council of Paint, Printing Ink and Artists
Colours industry (CEPE), Brussels. The
demands for proof of safety are more severe in the new legislation. Furthermore
providing the data to make this proof of
safety is very costly. There is a real threat

that a lot of products will be taken off

the market.
SMEs, particularly in the coatings
market, will be the hardest hit by the expense of gaining authorization so they
are the most likely to pull products off
the market or to move out of the sector
altogether.
The European Commission has
reduced the authorization fees for
SMEsby 60 percent for micro-organizations, 40 percent for small ones and
20 percent medium-sized companies,
explained Marko Susnik, a spokesperson on biocides for the European association of small and medium-sized
businesses (UEAPME). But it fails to
realize that much of the cost of authorization for companies is in the preparation of the safety dossiers.
While authorization of biocidal products can be done centralled through
ECHA, they can also be approved by
national authoritieseither individually
or through a mutual recognition system
under which an evaluation by a single
country will be accepted by groups of
other states.
There should be greater use of mutual recognition schemes which will help to
harmonize the whole European market,
said An Ghekiere, a biocides specialist at
Arche Consulting, Leuven, Belgium.
Nonetheless, the market will still be
liable to fragmentation as a result of individual states retaining powers to prohibit
or restrict individual biocidal products.
Consequently biocides can be banned
in one or more countries but permitted
in others. The Swedish Chemical Agency
(Kemi) last year banned anti-fouling coatings containing high levels of zinc oxide.
The agency decided they were pesticides,
rejecting claims by their producers that
they had a physical rather than chemical
effect and thus were exempt from biocidal regulatory controls.
Companies have been opting to have
new biocidal products approved by a
single national authority in the hope that
this would be cheaper and quicker.
However I-Tech, a Swedish startup, is
still waiting for an approval around 7-8
years after submitting a dossier to the
UK Health & Safety Executive (HSE) on

October 2013 www.coatingsworld.com

a new anti-foulant medetomidine, which

prevents barnacle larvae attaching themselves to the surfaces of ships.
The authority seems to have
no idea what delays like this mean
for a company like ours, said Lena
Lindblad, R&D manager of I-Tech.
Fortunately we have a very faithful Swedish venture capital company
backing us, otherwise we could have
had to go out of business.
The longer companies have to wait
for approvals the greater the danger
they will not obtain it because of new
requirements.
The authorities are in the early
stages of working out how to evaluate mixtures of more than one active
substance in a biocidal product, said
Ghekiere. Also, under the regulation
active substances and biocidal products should not contain endocrine
disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Yet
the Commission has still not decided
what will be the criteria for identifying EDCs. When it does, previously
approved substances found to contain
EDCs may have to be withdrawn.
Even large companies, let alone SMEs,
are being cautious about developing new
biocidal products when the approval process is so fraught with uncertainties.
(Cost) will be a potential barrier
to genuinely new biocides entering the
market, especially when you consider
that having the data does not guarantee that the active substance will be authorized for use, said Gareth Prowse,
AkzoNobels product regulatory affairs manager, marine and protective
coatings. We expect that increasingly
we would likely see the transfer of
pharmaceutical/agrochemical products
into the biocide market where significant data sets already exist, and therefore risk of rejection from the process
is less severe.
Overall with innovation rates lagging well behind those of withdrawals, there will be fewer products and
fewer companies producing or importing them. With less companies in the
market there will be less choice and
competition but higher prices, warned
Susnik. CW

Never the Twain Should Meet!

here is an old saying from Rudyard

Kipling, in his Barrack-room ballads,
1892: Oh, East is East, and West
is West, and never the twain shall meet. Its
meaning is simply, two things which are so
different as to have no opportunity to unite.
Kipling was lamenting the gulf of understanding between the British and the inhabitants of
the Indian subcontinent.
In our current global communication condition, while the worlds physical platelets
have basically stayed the same over the past
500 years, the cultural and communications
dynamics have moved at warp speed in the
past 75 years and are now not just bumping into each other, they are in fact overlaid
onto each other. This fact is forcing the business of doing business into an exponentially
more complicated and equally demanding
business orbit.
The speed and market/customer demanded
accuracy of communication that surround a
service or product development component,
therefore, requires vastly improved market demand assessment accuracies to be input with
much greater speed.
In other words, the market/customer bases
weve served in the paints, coatings, adhesives,

and sealants industries in the past have moved

into another orbit of tolerance and we in these
industries must adapt or fall out of favor, thus
being unable to fulfill our strategies.

Marketing & R&D

To succeed in our industries today a business
must be driven by Marketing, which takes the
lead from beginning to the end of a product/
service development process. Assuming the
Marketing function is strongly creative and
narrowly focused on targeted strategic markets/customers, it must first accurately identify
market needs, including but not limited to,
product performance in target markets use
environment; balance in value in price/cost ratios; and other elements that could influence
product/service.
This package of understanding, developed by Marketing, is then brought to the
internal team for developmental planning.
The key players on this team are . . . Research
& Development; Product/Service Manager;
Manufacturing and Purchasing. Once the team
signs off on the development plan, R&D will
then produce initial products that are first tested internally to the extent of the companys
internal capabilities.
Once this is completed and the product fits
the identified structural specifications, R&D
will identify an outside testing facility recognized by the target market as an authority, for

What is a Beta Test?

Why do it?

Beta testing is the process of subjecting

a product to testing by real customers in
their real environments prior to its release.
It adds a key dimension to quality testing,
with its unscripted use and wide variety of
environments that cant be replicated in a
lab setting. SOURCE: Wikipedia

For product developers, beta testing results

in higher quality products, improved customer satisfaction, better reviews, and increased sales, reduced support costs, more
insightful product planning, and a more
positive brand image. For customers, beta
testing offers the unique opportunity to

help improve products they love in a community of like-minded people. SOURCE:

Wikipedia
There is normally not a first-time total
success and subsequent tweaking takes
place with the outside testing authority.
Assuming a product is passed by the
outside testing facility; it is ready to be
taken by the Marketing Department and
designated R&D/Product Manager to the
customer for its first outside Beta Test.
Close communications is mandatory since
procedural questions/results needs be addressed quickly and thoroughly.
There should be minimal surprises
to anyone person on the team as well
as within the targeted market/customer
base. There are many keys to successful product development in this process.
However, the one predominant key factor is having one function responsible for
herding the essential elements over and
through the critical test and communications hurdles. That function alone, should
be the responsibility of Marketing. CW

Hacked Off!

t last. Here I was at the trailhead

of Avalanche Lake in Glacier
National Park. 3,000 foot waterfalls and blue-ice glaciers darted the
scenery. It was cool. It was fresh. It was
beautiful, and it was just the respite from
the Texas heat and months of hard work
that I so desperately needed. For weeks,
I had prepared to be gone from the office,
taking care of a months worth of business in advance, contemplating all that
could go wrong and putting measures into
place to back up operations in case they
did. I couldnt be happier to be embarking on my first hike. And then I saw it
no, not a bear,a voicemail. Shouldnt
I just ignore it, I thought? I did my time
in the office before I left; everythings in
order. But it was my banker, and with all
the banking transactions I had done for
the coming months expenses, I thought
better of it and listened.
I was just calling to find out the purpose of this last wire request. We need to
know for international wires was the
message from my banker. Indeed, I had
made several international wires to pay
patent fees prior to my departure. I dialed
her back. Before I could even say hello, she
cut me off Dont worry, honey, I dont
need anything more. I just got your e-mail
explaining the wire transfer to Singapore
and sent it off on time! Singapore,
Singapore, Singaporewe didnt have any
patents pending in Singapore! She continued, You know, the one for the purchase
of your condo there. Sounds exotic, I
remarked, but that wasnt me; Barbara,
Ive been hacked.
Ill call you back, was all I heard,
and the phone went dead. Fifteen minutes
later, I learned that almost $75,000 held in
the companys money market account had
been wired to an account in Singapore, no
doubt to fund some organized crime ring

there. I heard a vacuum sound as the life

was sucked out of my vacation.
The e-mails my banker saw never went
through my email account. The entire
communication took place outside my
view. They appeared to originate from my
e-mail address, and except for some broken English, sounded and looked
like my e-mails from the previous
week to Barbara. Specific account
names were referenced, and the
withdrawal amount coincided
with the balances in the account.
The hacker had assumed my
identity, and taken control over
my communications.
How did it happen? Well,
as I sit here writing this article
at Starbucks, I am touched by
the irony that not long ago, on
some coffee- fueled work rant at
Starbucks, I was hacked. Could
have been the guy sitting next
to me with password hacking
software who saw me on the
Starbucks public network and
cracked my AOL (yes, I am still
on AOL) password. How could
they do that? I begged of my
company IT guy, only to find that
its free software that anyone can
get online and it works great and
is very user friendly. As e-mails
are travelling over public wireless
networks, i.e. the ones that give
you a warning that others might
be able to view your information,ok, that should have been a
hint.your e-mail password travels with it, and with free, easy to
use software, anyone who wants
it can see your e-mail password. In fact,
I was told, it was not likely the first time
someone had intercepted my password.
Its happening all the time. Whats the lesson here? No more sending e-mails over
unprotected networksever. Dont even
have your e-mail open when you on a
public network.

So besides draining your bank account,

what are hackers after? They want your

You are surprised because youve had nothing but positive results in testing and raving

altered, but in every other way, including
the serial number, the coating appears to be
your brand. Youve been hacked all up and
down the place. Trade secrets, like formulations, know-how, branding, internal codes,
employee and customer information, business strategies and other sensitive information all compromised. And out there
somewhere, theres a website that looks exactly like yours; a parallel universe where
your customers are being directed to purchase what appears to be your goods, but
they arent. And they arent good.

It cant be that easy, can it? In researching

for this article, I did a quick Google search.
Wikihow popped up first with How to
Hack a Computer and there it was, step-bystep instructions for getting past a password,
getting remote access to a computer and
cracking a WIFI password. Yep, that easy.
Of course, firewalls and anti-virus

programs provide some barriers to entry.

But unknowingly, unwittingly, you can
take a voluntary action that subjects you
to attack. How many times have you
popped that custom-designed USB thumb
drive into your lapotop after a meeting or
trade show? Or provided your USB key to
someone to upload a presentation? When
you get it back, it might contain a little extra gift...a piece of malicious code, or malware that when plugged back into your
computer causes an execution of the infection. Now your networks are exposed, and
you are naked before the hackers.
Or it may happen with an email you receive. Recently, I was
in the heat of contract negotiations
when I received an e-mail from the
other attorney that he wanted me
to view a Google document using
Google Docs. We had been trading documents back and forth so
there was really nothing suspicious about it at first. The e-mail
sent me to a Google site which
requested my Google password.
When I pushed enter I had second thoughts. Indeed, I should
have checked with the attorney,
because he had been hacked. This
is referred to as spear phishing.
It happens when one party tries
to get access to anothers login information by masquerading as a
legitimate contact. It can also happen, for example, in the form of a
customer inquiry sent to your sales
department. Once your employee
clicks on the link or downloads
the attachment, a vulnerability in
the system, such as a word processor or browser will be exploited,
allowing the malware to begin executing on the machine and give
the hacker access and control over
your system. Sometimes, hackers
will target a particular website,
and seek out exposure on the site in order to target the users of that site. By implanting a malicious code on the website,
users of the site can become immediately
infected.
What are some practical measures that
can be taken to prevent hacking? There are
many high security tactics to take, however,

October 2013 www.coatingsworld.com

not all businesses have the financial wherewithal to install the most sophisticated security systems throughout their systems.
But its wise to spend some time identifying
and compartmentalizing and providing vigiliant security measures around your most
sensitive information. In all cases, though,
prudent businesses should do the following.
1. Perform software and browser updates whenever they are released,
and check regularly to make sure
none have been missed.
2. Install firewalls and anti-virus programs and keep them updated.
3.
Install anti-spyware/ adware. Often
overlooked as merely a nuisance, this
malware can slow down your computer by placing ads on your browser
and pop-ups on your programs. The
slowdown can result in vulnerabilities
in your system allowing a hacker to
get through. Your system information
could also be sold to others by the spyware intruder for malicious purposes.
4.
Never click on suspicious or unknown e-mail links. Dont believe
that its ok because it looks legit.
Youre just one click away from a
virus. Think before you click. And
delete suspicious or unknown emails from your system.
5.
Have separate passwords for all
your accounts and divisions. Make
them tough and use a password
manager. These programs will create and store passwords for you.
6. Use two-step verification for social networking sites. A two-step verification
requires that you enter a password,
and then a verification code is texted
to you before allowing you entry.
7. And of course, dont send e-mails
or do banking business over public networks.
Whatever you do, take measures
to lock up your sensitive information.
Cyber hackers are just thieves, looking
for an easy entry point. You lock your
doors at night; lock your cyber valuables
as well. With proper security, that hacker
will likely move on to some unsuspecting victim. And then maybe you wont
find out the hard way about that condo
in Singapore you bought that you will
never see. CW

Market
Bridget Klebaur, Associate Editor

he auto refinish market continues to struggle although

it is slowly growing despite the many challenges, and
many are hoping that economic improvements will help
the market to grow further.
We continue to find the market challenging, but challenging is getting to be the norm, said Kerstin Stranimaier, marketing director, AkzoNobel automotive and aerospace coatings.
Were optimistic that improvements overall in the U.S. economy will help us in one of our most important markets, but I
think people there are still being pretty cautious about how they
spend their money. In any case, new car sales in North America
are doing quite well, and that should be an indicator of more
disposable income, including, we hope, that people are more
willing to spend money on collision repairs as well. But Western
Europe is still very difficult, and now we also have our concerns
about some of the growth markets over the past few years especially Indonesia, Brazil, and India.
PPG found that they were experiencing growth in value on a
global level, due to positive dynamics in countries such as India
and Eastern Europe.
The mature NAFTA markets and Western Europe are more
challenging due to trends such as lower miles driven and a decrease in leased vehicle volume, explained John Outcalt, vice
president, PPG global refinish. Increased use of higher solids
coatings and more accurate color mixing systems, which reduce
waste, are also contributing factors. On the positive side, PPG
is benefiting from a significant increase in waterborne basecoat
volume as collision centers respond to stiffer VOC regulations

and the benefits of transitioning to this advanced technology

become more realized.

Trends and Challenges

The industry continues to focus on VOC legislation, causing
changes within the market.
VOC legislation will continue to be an industry focus, said
Paul Whittleston, vice president business management, BASF
automotive refinish business North America. Legislative activities have slowed recently but collision repair centers will need to
be prepared to make changes to how they do business and they
will be looking to their suppliers for answers.
Strict VOC legislation governing refinish products impact
collision centers and products in compliance with regulations.
As a result, collision shops in Western Europe, Canada,
California and, most recently, Delaware and Maryland have
made the technological shift to waterborne basecoat systems,
said Outcalt. Worldwide, there are now some 28,000-plus collision centers using a PPG waterborne basecoat system, including more than 9,000 in North America. Typically in the past, a
move to products with lower VOC content did not quite match
the level of performance of the products they replaced. From
PPGs experience, this doesnt hold true with our waterborne
basecoat technology.
The cost of energy continues to be an issue in the market,
according to AkzoNobel.
Energy prices are pretty volatile, but we think its likely
that they will rise over time, explained Stranimaier. Right

now, oil prizes are at a two-year high. The longterm trend is certain to be greater demand in
emerging markets; places like China and India
where hundreds of millions of people are joining the middle class; so its hard to see how there
wont be price pressure. For us, that means a
continuation of efforts to deliver products that
require less energy consumption.

key issue for auto refinish customers.

Anatomy of
Axaltas Rebrand
After the Carlyle Group acquired DuPont Performance Coatings for $4.9 billion last
year, the company was renamed Axalta Coating Systems. Coatings World recently had
the opportunity to talk about the rebranding process with Michael Crickenberger, vice
president of marketing, corporate affairs and planning at Axalta Coatings Systems.
Coatings World: Please describe the initial process of rebranding DuPont Performance Coatings as Axalta.
Michael Crickenberger: Looking back over the past year, Id
characterize Axaltas rebranding process as a combination of
collaboration and creativity. Collaboration
was the starting point. We began by asking
questions. We asked employees around the
world what they hoped our company could
become now that it was an independent
business. Who better than our own people
to know what our untapped resources were?
Then we asked our customers what they
thought of us and, just as importantly, what
they expected from a world class coatings
company because, at the end of the day, our
business is all about meeting our customers
expectations. The answers provided the goal
line we wanted to reach. Once we knew
where we were headed, the process unfolded.
The creative component, of course, was
coming up with an identity a new name,
a logo and an entire communication system to support and promote that new identity. Axalta Coating
Systems captures the scope of our business. The Axalta name
is at the top of the alphabet. Coatings describes every product
we make liquid or powder - in 35 manufacturing plants on
five continents. Systems conveys our approach to our business:
integrated systems in our R&D and manufacturing facilities,
consolidated process systems for OEMs, application systems to
enhance the refinish customer experience for color matching,

color choice, ease of application and business management, to

name a few.
Once we knew what the goal looked like and had a name, we
created a logo that would visually convey the spirit of our new
company. Thats the image of the organization. One of the things that sets us apart is
that our logo unlike those of many other
companies appears in many different colors. Look at the landing page of our website
axaltacoatingsystems.com and youll see the
logo transitions through our colors. This really communicates the essence of our company - were in the business of color.
CW: How long did the rebranding process take?
Crickenberger: The formal branding process has taken almost a year so far. But I
think our most important learning has been
that the process will never really stop. You
can have a a new identity but a label is only
skin deep. Every day we look at new ways
to bring the promise of our new identity a company built for
performance home to our customers. How can Axalta develop new brands that, for example, meet societal and regulatory
demands for reduced environmental impact? How can we improve the customer experience? What can we do to continually
improve product quality? This is what will keep long standing
customers coming back and give us the ability to attract new
ones.

Axaltas Rebrand FEATURE

We learned that coming up with a new Axalta brand was a

chance to do much more than create a new name and logo.
Axaltas rebrand created the opportunity to engage in new ways
with our employess, customers and others.

CW: DuPont is such an iconic brand, were there concerns

that the new name and identity would be detrimental to the
company?
Crickenberger: In one respect, there was a challenge. We wanted to take the best of the people and products that were part
of our past an identity that our customers in 130 countries
know well and carry them over to a completely new corporate brand. But many of our customers associate more with
our individual products such as our Spies Hecker and Standox
refinish brands. As well, Axaltas history dates back well before DuPont with the creation of the Spies Hecker brand by
Herberts in 1866. As we launched our new identity weve embraced our entire corporate heritage plus the strong identity of
individual brands. Thats the foundation on which were now
taking our business to the next level and bring added value to
all of our stakeholders.
CW: How has the new corporate identity been received by your
customers?
Crickenberger: Customer feedback has been terrific. They have
high standards in their businesses and they appreciate the quality of the approach weve taken to rebrand ours. They also
know its all about the customer. We expect all our customers
to continue to hold us to exacting standards in the months and
years ahead. More importantly, we know we cant rest on our
laurels.
CW: What are Axaltas plans for the future?
Crickenberger: Were committed to grow in order to meet customer expectations and stay on top of emerging trends. For
example, in May only 100 days after becoming an independent company we announced a $50 million investment to expand our manufacturing capacity in China to supply the growth
of OEMs in China. We started up a $5 million expansion of
our U.S. R&D that will accelerate new product development
and bring new formulations to market faster. Were always
implementing commercial strategies to grow market share organically. For example, we just established a relationship with
Service King Collision Repair Centers, one of the fastest growing body shop franchises in the U.S., to supply them with our
Spies Hecker line of refinish products. And were always examining opportunities to make strategic investments. This is the
momentum that will enable Axalta to grow.

CW: What are some important issues to consider when deciding

to rebrand a company?
Crickenberger: The biggest issue that we identified was the need
to communicate and to keep communications a two way street.
Youve got to listen to your stakeholders both inside the company, or employees, and outside our customers. Dont make
assumptions is another way to look at this. You dont know
what you dont know. Youve got to ask questions all the time
and get fresh perspectives along the way. The only way to solve
for this is to listen to others. Second, communicate with those
same stakeholders early and often. Inform employees about
progress theyre certainly Axaltas greatest resource and the
more they know and understand, the better. Finally, its critical to inform customers about the process. Our customers run
their own businesses large and small and understand change.
They dont expect change to occur overnight. They do expect to
know what the general path forward and whats coming next so
they can manage their business accordingly.
CW: Any final thoughts on the rebranding process?
Crickenberger: We learned that coming up with a new Axalta
brand was a chance to do so much more than create a new name
and logo. Axaltas rebrand created the opportunity to engage
in new ways with our employees, customers and others. Every
aspect of the business manufacturing, products, sales, service
and more - is tied into the rebranding process. The Axalta identity becomes part of each of these activities whether its visible,
such as a logo on a product label, or in the way the people of
Axalta embrace the values of the company when they work with
a customer. CW

Investments in China
Paint and coatings dompanies and their suppliers continue to invest in China.
Kerry Pianoforte, Editor

hina has become the worlds largest producer and consumer of coatings. According to a recent report, from
January to November 2012, Chinas coatings output
reached 11.4 million tons, with a year-on-year increase of 12.09
percent. This figure is expected to grow by 10 to 15 percent annually. According to IBISWorlds Paint Manufacturing market
research report, Paint Manufacturing in China, the Chinese
paint market is set to grow 11 percent in 2013 to reach $52.2
billion in revenue. According to the report, strong performance

growth in the paint manufacturing industry in China over the
five years through 2013.
As the paint, coatings, adhesives and sealants industries continue to grow in China, leading companies continue to invest
heavily in this region.
AkzoNobel recently announced plans to invest a total of
more than 50 million in China to build new manufacturing facilities for its powder coatings and decorative paints businesses,
adding further momentum to the companys strategic growth
ambitions.
Both new facilities will be located in Chengdu with the powder facility scheduled to open in 2014 and the decorative paints
site starting production in 2015.
The announcement follows the recent start-up of commercial
production of Bermocoll cellulose derivatives at the companys
multi-site in Ningbo, which will serve the growing demand from
customers throughout the region, as well as from AkzoNobels
own decorative paints business. Cellulose derivatives are used in
water-based paints and building additives applications.
China is playing an increasingly important role in our
growth strategy and by expanding production capacity we
will further strengthen our position as a leading supplier to the
Chinese market, said AkzoNobel CEO Ton Bchner.
We already have a strong manufacturing footprint in eastern,
central and southern China, he added. As demand and volumes
continue to rise, we will extend our production and distribution
westwards and the new sites will enable us to better serve our
customers whenever and wherever they need our products.
Chengdu is one of the fastest growing cities in south western
China and has consistently delivered double digit growth over
the last two decades. It has established itself as an important

industrial hub, resulting in high demand for quality powder

coatings and decorative paint, which is expected to remain
strong as the area continues to develop.
Our investments in Chengdu underline our commitment to
further developing our business in China and capitalizing on
the business opportunities being created by growing domestic
demand, said Lin Liangqi, president of AkzoNobel in China.
AkzoNobel currently employs more than 7,700 people in China,
including 500 in research and development. Revenue for 2012 was
1.7 billion, the majority being generated from local demand.

Auto Sales in China Continue to Climb

Chinas passenger-vehicle sales gained the most in four months
in August, led by sales of sport utility vehicles, as the worlds second-biggest economy rebounds from a two-quarter slowdown,
according to a recent report by Bloomberg News. Wholesale deliveries of cars, multipurpose and sport utility vehicles climbed
11 percent to 1.35 million units last month, the biggest gain
since April, according to the China Association of Automobile
Manufacturers.
Total sales of vehicles, including buses and trucks, gained 10
percent to 1.65 million units last month, the association said.
In the first eight months of the year, 13.9 million vehicles were
delivered, putting sales on track to reach the 20 million units
estimated by the association.
Sales of SUVs jumped 46 percent to 240,100 units last month,
while deliveries of multipurpose vehicles increased 162 percent to
105,600 units. Sedan deliveries gained 4 percent to 899,100 vehicles.
As a result of the surging automotive market, automotive
coating manufacturers are expanding their presence in China.
Business Development Asia LLC recently announced that its client, The Sherwin-Williams Company, has acquired 100 percent of
Changzhou Pulanna Coating Co., Ltd. Pulanna is a leading manufacturer of automotive coatings for sale in the Chinese aftermarket.
The acquisition increases Sherwin-Williams presence in Chinas
automotive sector where passenger car sales have grown strongly
in recent years, increasing from 6.8 million in 2008 to more than
16 million in 2012. Car sales are forecast to continue rising at an
annual rate of approximately 10 percent for the next decade.

Asian growth plans. We wish Sherwin-Williams all future success as the new owners of Pulanna, said Mark Webster, managing director of BDA.
Axalta Coating Systems will invest more than $50 million
to construct a new facility to manufacture and supply up to
25,000 metric tons of paint to automobile manufacturers that
are expanding into south and central China. The plant will be
dedicated to production of the companys waterborne coatings
that meet both manufacturer and regulatory environmental
standards. Pending final government approvals, construction of
the new facility is expected to break ground in the second half
of 2013 with production beginning the first quarter of 2015.
The new facility will be close to customers in the Shanghai
area and have easy access to major transportation routes reaching into western and southern areas of the country, said Charles
Shaver, chairman and CEO of Axalta Coating Systems. This

additional facility will complement the manufacturing capacity of Axaltas flagship OEM coatings manufacturing plant in
Changchun that is already accelerating production to meet extraordinary growth in automotive production in China.
The waterborne coatings that will be produced at the new
facility will be used in two of the consolidated manufacturing
processes that Axalta has developed for automobile manufacturers to improve productivity and save energy. The specially
formulated primer of Axaltas 3-Wet water-based system replaces the need for a full oven bake step required after the application of traditional primers, enabling manufacturers to replace
larger ovens which are expensive to build and costly to operate.
Products manufactured at the new facility will also be used with
Axaltas EcoConcept production system, a proprietary technology that combines the primer and basecoat, enabling manufacturers to replace multiple bake steps with only one.

FEATURE Investments in China

Chinas expanding car production is a reflection of the nations fantastic economic growth. Axalta is excited to contribute
to Chinas success story, said Shaver. We know our coating
systems make sense to manufacturers and the environment
alike. We never forget that the colors and performance of our
coatings also are part of the pleasure car owners receive when
they buy a car. Axalta is proud to be able to play such a multifaceted role in Chinas accomplishments.
BASF has also expanded automotive coatings production in
China. BASF Shanghai Coatings Company Limited is investing
in a new basecoat plant at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park
in Shanghai, China. The new plant will increase the companys
local production capacity for basecoat by 13,500 tons per year.
The investment represents an important step to strengthen
BASFs position as a leading coatings supplier to the automotive
industry in China, according to the company.
The new coatings plant is planned to start production in the
first half of 2014. It will be designed according to the latest and
most environmentally friendly manufacturing processes and technologies. BASF Shanghai Coatings Company Limited is a joint
venture with 15 years of successful partnership between BASF and
Shanghai Coatings Company Ltd. The joint venture is already running a production facility in the district of Minhang in Shanghai.
In China, BASF has been supplying coatings reliably to international and domestic car makers for more than 15 years. As
a long-term partner, we have witnessed how China has become
a world leader in automotive production, said Peter Fischer,
senior vice president, Coatings Solutions Asia Pacific at BASF.
Our investment in additional local coatings production facilities reflects our commitment to address the current and future
needs of our automotive customers in this dynamic market.
With our latest technologies, innovative coatings solutions

and processes, we will continue to invest in strengthening our

infrastructure to support the growing automotive industry in
China, Fischer continued.
BASF is the coatings supplier who first introduced waterborne basecoats to China in 2005. The company offers a wide
range of products for use in the automotive industry throughout the value chain, for automotive manufacturers and suppliers
and in customer service.
PPG Industries has made a number of major investments in
China. PPG opened its new automotive OEM coatings development and application center in Tianjin, China. This facility is the
first of its kind locally, and it will focus on the development of
automotive coatings in China.
The company also opened PPG Coatings (Tianjin) Co., Ltd.,
a new waterborne coatings manufacturing facility. The Tianjin
plant is PPGs largest coatings manufacturing facility globally,
and the expansion significantly increases the plants production
capacity for waterborne coatings.
We are pleased to celebrate the completion of this critical
expansion project in China, said Cynthia Niekamp, PPG senior
vice president, automotive OEM coatings. Chinas automotive
manufacturing industry is experiencing dramatic growth, and in
light of new environmental protection regulations, the increased
demand for eco-friendly waterborne automotive coatings continues to drive the expansion of PPGs business here.
Last year, the Regulation on the Access Management of Passenger
Vehicle Manufacturers and Products went into effect, requiring that
all automotive basecoats and topcoats used in manufacturing have
waterborne formulas, setting a new entry threshold for automakers.
As a result, PPGs waterborne coatings technologies with its low
VOC emissions and high cost-efficiency have become increasingly
popular with automakers in China, the company reported.

BASF Launches Campus Talks for 2014 Graduates in China

FEATURE Investments in China

Following the environmental protection policies stipulated
by the Chinese government, we estimate that waterborne coatings use on newly built vehicles in China will increase from 40
percent of new builds to more than 60 percent within the next
five years, said Vincent Robin, PPG vice president, automotive
coatings, Asia Pacific. PPG is well positioned to help automakers in China increase their use of waterborne coatings products
and technologies. For example, the B1:B2 premium compact
process is an innovative waterborne coatings technology that
enables our customers to eliminate the primer layer and reduce
the total cost of painting a car, as well as the total weight of the
vehicle for fuel efficiency.
In addition to the capacity expansion, the new development
and application center is equipped with advanced, state-of-theart equipment to simulate the automatic car painting processes
in a shop, which is another example of introducing PPGs best
practices to China, Robin added.
Innovation, sustainability and color expertise have long
been strengths at PPG, said Mike Horton, PPG president, Asia
Pacific. The expansion of our capacity to manufacture waterborne coatings marks a crucial step toward our sustainable
development. We will continue to capitalize on the favorable
investment climate and geographic advantages of the Tianjin
Binhai New Area and to develop and produce more premium
technologies and sustainable products for the Chinese and global automotive markets.
With automotive coatings plants in Tianjin and Wuhu and
a resin plant in Zhangjiagang, PPG serves a wide range of automotive coatings customers in China including well-known
global automakers and leading domestic manufacturers.
PPG Industries recently opened a new manufacturing facility for the production of heavy-duty equipment coatings in
Tianjin, China. The Tianjin site also has installed equipment to
help reduce VOC emissions and preserve the local environment,
the company reported. With annual capacity of approximately
9,000 tons, the new plant will produce industrial coatings for
China-based manufacturers of heavy-duty machinery, such as
agricultural, construction and mining equipment. Demand
for premium coatings products in various industries and by
local and multinational companies operating in China continues to grow rapidly, said John Richter, PPG vice president of
operations, coatings, Asia Pacific. We are pleased, and this
investment demonstrates our continuing business and environmental commitment to the region and toward meeting the expanding customer demand.
Along with the Tianjin plant, PPG has a research center and a
powder coatings plant in Suzhou to help improve local product
development, supply-chain efficiency and technical service. The
new manufacturing operation in Tianjin improves the regional
capacity of PPGs industrial coatings.
The overall Tianjin coatings operation was the first PPG
coatings plant built in China, and it has developed into PPGs
largest coatings production base in the world. The factory currently supplies automotive OEM coatings and industrial coatings to the China market.

Suppliers Invest in China

There has been a flurry of investments in China by suppliers to the
paint and coatings industry. BASF is building a new Ultramid polymerization plant with a capacity of 100,000 metric tons per year
in Shanghai, China. The new plant is planned to start up in 2015.
As part of our long-term strategy, we aim to locate production
close to our customers in the Asia Pacific region, so that we can better support their growth, operate more efficiently and collaborate
more closely. BASF intends to grow two percentage points above
the market in Asia Pacific and maintain our commitment to environmental protection as well as ensuring a positive contribution to
society for a sustainable future , said Albert Heuser, president and
chairman Greater China and Functions Asia Pacific.
The demand for polyamide products in the engineering plastics, fiber and film industries will grow strongly, particularly in
China, said Hermann Althoff, senior vice president of the Global
Polyamide and Intermediates Business Unit. The investment enables us to participate in this growth and supply our Asian customers with locally manufactured high performance products.
The BASF wholly-owned plant will be built at the Shanghai
Chemical Industry Park in Caojing which is also home to a
world scale facility for integrated isocyanates, operated by
BASF and partners. bAt this location, BASF also has production
plants for polytetrahydrofuran (PolyTHF) and polyisocyanate
(Basonat) for the coatings and furniture finishing industry and
precious metal solutions for automotive catalysts.
BASF operates Ultramid polymerization plants in
Ludwigshafen, Germany; Antwerp, Belgium; Freeport, Texas
and So Paulo, Brazil. The production of polyamide for film,
textile and carpet fiber as well as for engineering plastics applications is integrated into BASFs global Verbund structure with
polyamide intermediates (i.e. adipic acid, anolon, caprolactam),
chemical raw materials (i.e. ammonia, cyclohexane, sulfuric
acid), energy, by-product recovery, logistics and other services.
BASF has recently announced plans to invest 90 million to
set up a world-scale production plant at the Shanghai Chemical
Industry Park in Shanghai, China. The new plant will produce
high performance resins and electrocoat (e-coat). The start-up of
the production line is planned for the second half of 2015. The
plant will help to address the increasing demand for high quality
coatings solutions in growing industries, notably the automotive
industry, in Asia Pacific.
The continued investment in our infrastructure and capacity
demonstrates our strong commitment to supporting our customers
growing business in the automotive market in Asia Pacific, particularly in China, said Peter Fischer, senior vice president, Coatings
Solutions Asia Pacific. With the new plant in place, we will respond
to customers even quicker and further enhance our efficiency of logistics and supply of advanced coatings products.
This new resin and e-coat plant will be located adjacent to another new BASF automotive coatings plant which broke ground
in early 2013. The close proximity of these two plants will allow
for more synergies and efficiency, the company reported.
Resin is a key intermediate used in the production of various
types of coatings. The new facility will supply resins with the

latest technology to support the companys expanding coatings
production and growth plans.
Applying the latest technologies, BASFs new plant will also
supply CathoGuard 800, an e-coat that is ideally suited for the
new standard of integrated coatings application processes and
contains less than one percent solvents. E-coat is a critical coating layer in automotive production, protecting a cars surfaces,
edges and cavities from corrosion, as well as being the base for
applying subsequent paint layers.
Ashland Inc. recently celebrated the grand opening of its new
gelcoats production facility in the Chemical Industry Park of
Changzhou Yangtze Riverside Economic Development Zone.
This $60 million dollar facility, which is Ashlands most advanced gelcoats plant in the world, serves customers in marine,
sanitary ware, transportation, wind energy and industrial markets in China and the broader Asia Pacific region.
The plant currently employs 30 people and is located in
Changzhou where Ashland also operates an unsaturated polyester resins and epoxy vinyl ester resins production facility that
has been manufacturing products in the region for more than
10 years. The grand opening celebration was attended by nearly
250 people, including customers, suppliers, trade associations,
government officials from various levels of Changzhou and
members of the media.
Gelcoats are specialty resins that help to improve the appearance of fiberglass products and to protect structural layered
materials from corrosion. They are used in a wide variety of
consumer and industrial products, including yachts, bathtubs,
basins, high-speed trains, buses, wind energy blades, nacelles,
cooling towers and storage tanks.
Ashlands product brands include award-winning Maxguard
and Enguard gelcoats. The new facility will also produce adhesives, fire retardant resins and low-profile additives for many
industrial products. With an initial annual capacity of 10,000
tons of gelcoats and 2,000 tons of adhesives products, the facility is designed for further expansion to meet increasing market
demand across Asia.
China is an attractive market for investment, despite some
of the current economic challenges. Ashland has made a series
of investments in the country over the past few years to expand
our ability to serve local customers, said Ted Harris, senior
vice president and president, Ashland Performance Materials;
and president, Ashland Global Supply Chain. This new facility
reflects Ashlands commitment to maintaining the highest production standards for gelcoats products. More importantly, we
are extremely proud of our two-year zero incident record we
maintained throughout the construction of this plant. Thanks to
the long-term support provided by the Changzhou government,
Im confident that this new facility will soon become an integral
part of Ashland family and the local community.
Ashland started our gelcoats business in China in 1995, and
we have enjoyed significant growth since then, added Baochang
Zhang, vice president, Ashland Performance Materials, Asia
Pacific. This new facility will enable us to better assist our customers in providing competitive products to the marketplace

while strengthening our position as Chinas leading gelcoats

supplier. Ashland is committed to Responsible Care, said

Dow Corning (Shanghai) Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of Dow Corning
Corporation, a leader in silicones, silicon-based technology and innovation, celebrated the completion of its multi-million USD expansion at the Shanghai Songjiang site that marks one of the largest
single investments in Chinas paper release industry to date.
The newly established solventless silicone manufacturing system demonstrates the companys continued effort to increasing
efficiency in the regional supply chain and brings environmental
and financial benefits for customers across China and the Asia
Pacific region because no solvents are used.
Dow Corning entered the China market in 1973 and to
date, its combined investment in China is more than $2 billion. The companys three major facilities in China the newly expanded manufacturing Songjiang site that serves as the
Asia Specialty Chemicals Hub; Zhangjiagangs manufacturing
facility that is an integral part of Chinas largest integrated
silicone production site as well as Shanghais Dow Corning
China Business and Technology Center are key to providing
a complete and complementary local service offering, the company reported. This fully integrated local supply chain enables
customers to benefit from a more reliable supply of locally produced products; a reduced lead time on products delivery; and
lower costs and a diminished carbon footprint due to reduced
trans-ocean freight costs.
Allnex officially opened its new Technical Services &
Development (TS&D) laboratory in Shanghai. This facility is
planned to bring together Allnexs key technologies under one

China
Will It Survive The Global Downturn?
Dan Watson, Contributing Writer
Blairgowrie Associates; dwatson@aol.com

ecently, there has been a great deal of discussion in the

financial community about the continuing shaky state
of the global economy. In many of the current financial articles the status and role of the second largest economy
(i.e., the Chinese economy) has been called into question. Weve
seen a flurry of articles about Chinas slowdown and whether
the country has the ability to keep social order intact as things
slow down. During this slow down period we have
seen inflation happening inside China, we have
witnessed unemployment at levels never experienced by China. We have seen an exit of
wealthy Chinese who are escaping a China
that has become polluted (air, water, land).
At the same time we have listened to various
China experts and read numerous articles
proclaiming that China will surpass the U.S.
by 2016. Polls taken inside China indicate
that two out of three Chinese now predict
that their country will overtake the U.S., an
eight percentage point increase since 2008.
The number of Americans today who agree
has jumped 11 percentage points to 47 percent.
Lets be honest, China has enjoyed an impressive run over the past three decades with real
annual gross domestic product (GDP) growth
averaging nearly 10 percent through 2012.
China is currently the worlds second-largest
economy, largest merchandise exporter, secondlargest merchandise importer, second-largest
destination of foreign direct investment (FDI),
largest manufacturer, and largest holder of foreign exchange reserves. All of this sounds great
but as the old saying goes, all that glitters is

not gold. China will also become the worlds largest importer
of crude oil in October, surpassing the U.S. for the first time
as the Asian giants rising consumer class of drivers grows increasingly thirsty for fuel, or so the U.S. Energy Information
Administration is projecting.
China already is the largest importer of oil from the troubled
Middle East, taking away a distinction that
has plagued the U.S. since the 1970s.
Its move to being the worlds largest
importer, even as U.S. dependence
on Middle Eastern oil declines to
negligible levels, could transform
regional and world politics as
the focus of global defense efforts for decades has been keeping open the vital oil shipping
lanes leading from the Persian
Gulf to the US and Europe.
Chinas emergence as the
worlds biggest oil importer has
been building for years, but grew
particularly rapidly this decade along
with record breaking car sales, which
surged to more than 19 million units last
year. China, with its increasingly prosperous population of 1.3 billion, has been
the worlds largest market for autos since
2009. Oddly, most Americans are completely unaware of this fact.
This number one distinction is causing Chinas consumption of oil to surge
by 13 percent to 11+ million barrels a day
between 2011 and 2014. Additionally,

56 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

October 2013

Chinas manufacturing industries are also heavy users of oil.

With Chinas domestic oil production pegged at about 3 million
barrels a day and growing slowly, that means it has had to escalate oil imports to satisfy demand a situation that is projected
to continue for the remainder of this decade.
As it turns out, Chinas growing oil need is directly affecting
the U.S. and its consumers because it now has a major and growing influence on the price of oil and other critical commodities.
As you might expect, this remarkable economic growth over
the past three decades by China has not been achieved without creating some serious internal financial and other problems
along the way. Pollution inside China is at a dangerous level.
Many of us recall the air pollution during the Olympics. Almost
daily there are reports of health related issues as a result of pollution sources. The global economic crisis that began in 2008
has greatly affected Chinas economy. Chinas exports, imports,
and FDI inflows declined, GDP growth slowed from its 10+ percent level to just over 7 percent, and millions of Chinese workers
lost their jobs. The Chinese government immediately responded
by implementing a $586 billion economic stimulus package,
loosening monetary policies to increase bank lending, and providing various incentives to boost domestic consumption. The
economy quickly bottomed out, and the rebound saw a quick
recovery. The recovery not only sustained the Chinese economic
miracle, but also sparked debate about the so called China
Model among many economic theorists. They wondered what
kind of system and cultural codes are hidden behind the myths
of seemingly never-ending economic growth.
Unfortunately, what the world found out was that China
had not discovered the secret to never ending economic growth.
As predicted by a number of global economists, a rapid decline

began after the central government made a gradual reduction of

the stimulus. We saw a somewhat similar happening in the U.S.
when the Federal Reserve announced a possible end to the QE
program. The decline in China was in fact too rapid for the comfort of major policy makers. In the first quarter of 2012, Chinese
macroeconomists proposed the policy of steady growth.
Historically, China has been reliant on a large export oriented economy (i.e., growth and stability relied mostly on income derived from exported products). In recent years China
has attempted to change their reliance on exports to become
more of an internal, domestic consuming economy. In attempting this transition, China has seen the evolution of a Middle
Class which has driven numerous internal growth engines such
as real estate, automotive production and infrastructure expansion. Unfortunately, it also opened China up to a host of new
problems, many of which they were not prepared to handle.
The new Middle Class found that they were able to generate
and acquire wealth but had few ways to invest (i.e., they cannot invest outside of China and returns from local banks were
very low). In other words, the central government was more
interested in exercising control than sponsoring more growth
opportunities for the population.
Some years ago, the Chinese government changed its policy
and allowed people to buy their own homes and with that change
the flood gates opened. In order to keep the fledging middle class
resurgence alive and robust the Chinese government has spent
over $2 trillion dollars to build whole cities for use by the Chinese
public. Unfortunately, with the downturn in the global economy, these cities have become ghost cities with no inhabitants.
Chinese officials have reigned in this problem regarding more
construction and expansion but the vacant cities still exist.

FEATURE Chinas Economy

So, the question of the hour becomes, whats next? Has the
global downturn impacted China such that what we are seeing
today is the new normal for China?
This is a very difficult question to answer. According to a
number of economist, the Chinese economys potential growth
rate may have already moderated, from 10 percent in 200010
to an estimated 8 percent overall in 201020, and will slow
further to 6 percent over 202030. If these figures are roughly
correct, then the 78 percent range that we have witnessed
over the past couple of years may have become the new normal of Chinese growth. Of course, this raises the question,
can ordinary Chinese tolerate growth rates much below 7 percent? The same process that determines the impact of slower
Chinese growth on the rest of the world will also determine
how it will affect ordinary Chinese. Some economists speculate that the Chinese downturn will be similar to the Japanese
downturn we witnessed some years ago. In other words, the
Chinese wont mind a downturn in their GDP growth as long
as the average Chinese has sufficient money to maintain a reasonable lifestyle. I dont subscribe to this theory due to the
fact that even in the worst of the Japanese downturn the average Japanese was fairly wealthy. In China, we still have a huge
part of the population who are not benefiting from the growth
that has occurred inside China. A downturn in Japan had a
minor impact on the local population whereas a downturn in
China will more than likely have a very serious impact on a
large portion of the population.

It would seem that for every theory you may have about
Chinas economy, if you look hard enough you will be able to
find appropriate data to support it. Whether China will enjoy
ongoing prosperity or be faced with an ever enlarging financial
catastrophe I dont pretend to know. However, I do know that
the current slowdown of GDP growth in China will have to
have gut-wrenching effects at some point in the future. There is
no such thing as a free lunch in such matters. If China leadership is smart (and a bit lucky) it may be possible to save China
from experiencing a hard landing. Unfortunately, regardless of
the path Chinas leadership chooses to take in this matter, somebodys going to be hurt, eventually.
The impact of the slowdown in GDP growth on the coating
industry is not known at this stage. China has been enjoying a
huge increase in the consumption of coatings over the past few
years (see Fig. 1.0). In 2012 this historical growth slowed to
a total in 2012 of 11.5 million tons of coating. Projections for
2013 indicate only a modest change from 2012 level.
The Chinese coating market is highly diverse with the largest
segment being architectural coatings (see Fig. 2.0). This breakdown of coatings may change in 2013 due to the economic
slowdown directly impacting the housing market.
Speculation would suggest that with the actions taken by the
Chinese leadership to curb the construction of more homes and
cities that there will be a corresponding decline in architectural
coatings. Although this may be a direct cause and affect happening there is still a huge recoat architectural market in China.

FEATURE Chinas Economy

This author believes that the Chinese economy will eventually

weather the current global downturn if its leaders choose wisely
and implment true economic measures that are not just band
aid fixes.
On the surface, what appears to be continuing is the
automotive coatings area. Whether or not the Chinese
slowdown will impact on the automotive production area
is yet to be decided. Different products that come under
automotive paints include clearcoats and touch-up paints,
pretreatment chemicals, intermediate coats, electrodeposition primers, and solid and metallic top coats. Automotive
paints are required for metal, plastic exterior paint and for
interior coating. Coatings that are used in auto paints include electrocoats, primers, powder coatings, basecoats, and
clearcoats. Some of the major companies that deal in auto
paints include DuPont, PPG, Nippon Paints, Kansai Nerolac
Paints, BASF, AkzoNobel, KCC and Guangdong Yin Fan

Chemistry Co. Ltd. In other words, there is a huge investment by both foreign and local businesses inside China.
This author believes that the Chinese economy will eventually weather the current global downturn if its leaders choose
wisely and implement true economic measures that are not just
band aid fixes. There is reason to be concerned about China
becoming the number one importer of foreign oil and what that
might mean to the rest of the world. For certain, the economic
and social reforms that have started in China must continue
if China is to survive long term and overtake the U.S. economy. Until the bulk of its huge population enjoy the benefits of
Chinas remarkable growth over the past 30 years there is genuine concern about its long term stability. CW

Nanotechnology is highly multidisciplinary, drawing from
fields such as colloidal science, device physics and supra-molecular chemistry. Typically, they are five to 10 times more efficient
than their traditional counterparts and attracting worldwide
R&D work in both public and private sectors. However, the
prevailing concept if it is nano-it must be efficient is debatable. Biotechnology provides tools for adopting and modifying
biological organisms, products, processes and systems found in
nature to develop processes and products which are eco-efficient
and profitable. It is providing a range of tools for the industry
towards improving cost whilst contributing to the concept of
sustainable products.
The aim of this Conference is to critically assess the available
technology, stimulate new ideas, linking academia and industry
in a most thought-provoking and productive form.
Presentation of papers and post-presentation discussions will
be conducted in both English and Chinese (Putonghua).
The first keynote will be delivered by Prof. Jamil Baghdachi of
the Coatings Research Institute, Eastern Michigan University, U.S.
on Monday, November 18th at 1:45 PM. Prof. Baghadachi will
present NanoTechnology in Coatings: Realizing the Potential.
According to Prof. Baghadachi, Nanoscience and
Nanotechnology have fueled vigorous research and development in material science, which is being applied to develop
coatings with novel properties. The approach has enabled
molecular level control of composition and nanometer scale
property control that have resulted in rapid developments in
raw materials and coatings with improved decorative and
protective properties as well as enhanced adhesion, superior
aesthetics, and improved corrosion resistance. This keynote
paper focuses on the development and application of organic
and inorganic nanomaterials in coatings, examples of coatings and their properties.
Papers to be delivered after the keynote on Monday include:
Sustainable Polyesters for Powder Coatings presented by Dr.
Alessandro Minesso of Allnex, Belgium and Antimicrobial
Nano-Additives for Architectural Paints & Impregnates presented by Prof. Maria Zielecka of the Industrial Chemistry
Research Institute, Poland.
There will be seven presentations on Tuesday, November 19

urgency is driving activity on both research
and development of renewable and sustainable
polymers and coating
manufacturing. In the
first decade of the new century most of raw materials and
coating manufacturers have dedicated sizable portion of resources for producing products in sustainable and environmentally compliant manner.
The objective of this tutorial is to review and discuss the
most recent advances in producing coatings from sustainable

Theme 2: Intermediates will be presented by Paul Kelley, market
development radcure applications specialist at Perstorp Group.
His talk is Intermediates
for the Design and
Control of Hard and
Soft UV Curing Plastic
Coatings. Coatings for
plastic applications tend
to be functional, whether
it is hard scratch proof
coatings, optical coatings
with specific refractive index, or soft feel coatings
which give a tactile aspect and add to a feeling of quality. There
is a trend towards UV curing coatings with carefully controlled
physical characteristics for end use requirement. Development of

materials innovation, processing techniques optimization, and
knowledge discovery.
Theme 4: Waterborne Technology will be addressed by Hua
Zhou, R&D engineer at Arkema Coating Resins and his presentation, Novel Waterborne Technology for Metal Protection.
Metals and their alloys are excellent materials with high
strength and outstanding mechanical properties. However,
when exposed to a corrosive environment, the surface of a steel
structure will corrode and thus pose a potential danger to the
whole steel structure and reduce its service life. The huge economic impact of the corrosion of metallic structures is a very
important issue for all modern societies.
Today, corrosion protection of metal usually employs multilayer systems involving at least a primer and a top coat. These two
coats are often based on different technologies implying solventborne and water-borne binders and formulations. It introduces
complexity in applications, drying equipment and processes.
There is a new waterborne acrylic technology that provides
by itself high protection against corrosion and good adhesion
to a wide variety of substrates, even under harsh conditions.
Due to these key features, this waterborne technology offers

many performance advantages when used as the single Directto-Metal (DTM) coating.
This presentation will highlight the performance properties of
the waterborne DTM technology, as well as the mechanisms and
fundamentals which have been used in the resin development.
Theme 5: Polyurethane Coatings will feature a presentation, Innovative PU Solutions for Coatings, given by
Frank Zhang, segment head for application development
APAC, Bayer MaterialScience. Polyurethane coatings had
been widely used in varies applications. With the increasing
requirements on Environment, Efficiency & higher performance, the new requirements to conventional solventborne
polyurethane coatings had been raised as well. In this session, we will discuss how waterborne PU or WB UV to
achieve high performance as well as environment friendly
& efficiency at the same time. This is also the trends for
coatings in the future.
Theme 6: Tackifiers will offer a presentation from Won
Suk Kong of Kolon Industries. His presentation is Synthesis

and Characterization of Hydrogenated Sorbic Acid Grafted

Dicyclopentadiene Tackifier.
Typically, hydrocarbon resins are non-polar, and thus highly
compatible with non-polar rubbers and polymer. However, they
are poorly compatible with polar system, such as acrylic copolymer, polyurethanes and polyamides. Moreover, recently the raw
materials of tackifier from naphtha cracking had been decreased
because of light feed cracking such as gas cracking. To overcome
this problem, novel hydrocarbon resins were designed to have
a highly polar chemical structure. And, it was synthesized by
Diels-Alder reaction of dicyclopentadiene monomer and sorbic
acid from blueberry as renewable resources. Acrylic resins were
formulated with various tackifiers solution including hydrogenated sorbic acid grafted dicyclopentadiene tackifier in acrylic
adhesive and rolling ball tack, loop tack, 180 peel adhesion
strength, and shear adhesion strength were measured. And
Rheometer, DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) and XRD
(X-ray diffraction), the properties depend on the softening point
and polar content of tackifiers. CW

CHINACOAT2013 will take place Nov. 20-22 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center. There will be six exhibit zones featuring a total of 920 exhibitors
from 33 countries/regions who will showcase their goods and services.

TiO2 Solar Cell

Efficiency Rises
Charles W. Thurston, Contributing Editor

aint-on solar cells are coming closer to reality every year.

Recent research on the use of anatase titanium dioxide
in solar cells has once again raised the photovoltaic efficiency bar now to 15 percent for solar cells, suggesting that
it may yet become a basic block in building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV).
While research in dye solar cells has been ongoing for decades as a less expensive alternative to silicon solar cells, a new
consortium of players is aiming to make TiO2-based BIPV commercially available within a few years. Global research on TiO2based solar cells include applications on glass, metal, flexible
plastic and other surfaces. Unlike silicon-based solar cells, designed to operate in full sunlight, dye solar cells operate well in
lower-light conditions.
The latest efficiency breakthrough was published in Nature
magazine in July by the so-called father of dye solar cell development, Michael Grtzel, a research professor at Ecole
Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL), in Switzerland. The
efficiency of different types of materials being researched to produce solar cells ranges from a single-digit to 40-plus percent efficiency, at very different costs. His work includes the discovery
that titania molecules ranging between two nanometers and 50
nanometers provided the best conductors for electrons in the cells.
Similarly, a major technical breakthrough occurred in May
with solid state dye solar cell (DSC) technology, which catapulted to 11.3 percent efficiency at full sun, said Angela Geary,
the brand manager for Dyesol Inc. based in Queanbeyan NSW,
Australia. She noted that by comparison, performance was at
just five percent in 2010 and significantly lagged the traditional
liquid DSC material set performance.
To help commercialize this work, Grtzel is cooperating
with Dyetec Solar, a Toledo-based joint venture between parent Dyesol and Pilkington Glass, to come up with a large format coated glass solar cell for use in buildings and automobiles.
Pilkington is a subsidiary of Nippon Sheet Glass, of Tokyo.
Dyetec has received a $950,000 grant from the Ohio Third
Frontier Commission, which fosters new technology in the state.
A new $16 million investment in Dyetec is being considered

by National Titanium Dioxide, or Cristal, based in Jeddah, Saudi

Arabia, through its parent company National Industrialization
Company of Saudi Arabia (Tasnee). Cristal is the second largest
TiO2 producer in the world and Tasnee is the second largest industrial conglomerate in the Saudi. Tasnee has already invested
$4 million in the project.
Dyesol earlier this year forged a two-year research cooperation pact with Nanyang Technological University, in Singapore,
for dye solar cell development, following similar agreements
on several continents. Apart from the Dyesol/Dyetec efforts,
perhaps a dozen other companies are working to develop commercial-scale dye solar cells. The U.S. Department of Energys
National Renewable Energy Laboratory, in Golden, CO, also
has been at work to develop nanotubes and other TiO2 forms
for use in solar cells for several years.
In a basic dye solar cell, a TiO2 layer with absorbed dye is
used as an anode to collect and transmit electrons excited by its
exposure to sunlight. The particle size of TiO2 anatase is in the
range of 10 to 25 nanometers with a film thickness of 5 to 15
micrometers and a porosity of around 60 percent to ensure a
large internal surface area for adsorbing dye molecules, according to Materials Today. CW

Nubiola Increases Yellow

Iron Oxide Capacity
Nubioloa has made an investment to
triple production capacity for its Yellow
Iron Oxide Nubifer Y-7050. Nubifer
Y-7050 was designed to fulfill the need
for high temperature stable, weatherable,
yellow pigments for plastics and powder,
coil and stoving coatings. Conventional
Yellow Iron Oxides withstand 190C (5
min.) while Nubiolas proprietary encapsulation technology makes Nubifer
Y-7050 remain stable up to 260C (5
min.), the company reported. The encapsulation consists of a very thin, effective
layer made only out of inorganic compounds; it improves the heat fastness of
the pigment by preventing water from being released in the hydrated Iron Oxide
form, i.e. goethite (yellow), so that the
anhydride Iron Oxide form, i.e. hematite (red), is not generated and the yellow
color remains as is.

BMW Isetta Outfitted

with Innovative Solutions

Once named the bubble car, the Isetta turns heads wherever it goes. BASF has created a unique MySetta show car based on a
1958 BMW Isetta 250.
The MySetta is a two-seater that you enter through the front. Innovative BASF products were used to give the car a modern
outfit. The MySettas chassis, the body, the add-on parts and its interior were completely refurbished. For the overhaul, BASF paints,
coated fabrics and flexible foam were used.
The MySetta made different stops during its refurbishment. For the first stop, a specially developed two-tone finish was applied
to the microcar at BASF Coatings Refinish Competence Center in Mnster. During the refinishing process, the experienced master
spraypainter Michael Wichmann oriented himself toward the original color, using blue for the lower part of the car and white for
the top. The motocoupe now turns heads with its shimmering basecoat. The waterborne special-effect paint is composed of the
colors Big White and the metallic blue Bluetta, which BASF color designers specially created for the Isetta. Special-effect materials
create Big Whites brilliant appearance. The modern high-tech paints from BASFs automotive refinish brand Glasurit 90 Line were
used. For classic cars, Glasurit also has a dedicated portfolio: the Classic Car Colors, which features the worlds largest historic
color library with a total of 600,000 mixing formulas. Of course, the collection also includes the Isettas original colors. CW

Innovative BASF products were used to give the car a modern outfit.
