Compassion in Early Modern Culture (1550-1700)

Thistwodayinternationalconferenceaimstobringtogetherliteraryscholars,arthistorians,
musicologists,andculturalhistorianstoexplorethinkingabouttheexperienceaswellasthe
socialandpoliticalimpactofcompassioninearlymodernEuropeanculture.Itseeksto
combinetwocurrentapproachestotheearlymodernpassions:historicalphenomenologyon
theonehandandtheanalysisoftheroleofcompassioninthepublicsphereontheother.
SirPhilipSidneyfamouslyclaimedpoliticalimpactfortheexperienceofcompassionwhen
hewrotethatthatthefeelingsofpityandfeararousedbytragedycouldmollifytheheartsof
tyrants.Participantsareinvitedtodiscusswhichviewsontheexperienceofcompassion
existedinearlymodernEurope,andhowthearousalofcompassioninliterature,theatres,art,
sermons,music,andelsewherewasthoughttoimpactordidimpactthepublicsphere.

NetherlandsOrganisationforScientiWicResearch(NWO)andiscohostedbyACCESS,the
AmsterdamCentreforCrossDisciplinaryEmotionandSensoryStudiesandtheFacultyof
HumanitiesofVUUniversity,Amsterdam.
