INTRODUCTION :
Its hard to fathom Pakistan without constant bomb blasts, a crippling economy, a
mismatched budget and countless lives lost in a war more than half of the population
does not understand, but life in Pakistan before the atrocious attacks of 9/11 was a rather
normal, peaceful one. As per the nature of the article, various people were asked what life
felt like before the war on terror began; the majority opined that everyday routine and
other matters were never as bloody and gory as they are today. First off they claim that
the paranoia and constant worry people experience wasnt this rampant before. If there
were bomb blasts, there were only a few hither and thither. However, after the war on
terror and the Pakistani governments open alliance with the US government in a
crackdown on insurgents and other rebellious factions, life in Pakistan got a lot more
complicated and violent. To understand the nature of the US-Pakistan alliance in the war
on terror, one must remember the hypocritical and shady businesses of both governments
in funding the very same groups they attack today: The Taliban. It is understood that both
regimes supported these groups until 9/11. Hence the strength and power of the Taliban is
a product of the support rendered by the US and Pakistani governments.

EFFECT ON SPORT INDUSTRY:

Cricket legend Imran Khan claimed that Pakistan is definitely paying the price for
backing the US-led war on terror. He criticized Musharraf for blindly following the USA
in the war against terrorism. This has affected the cricket industry and tourism industry
most definitely due to the fact that now prospective tourists and cricket teams refuse to
land in a country where instability is a daily occurrence. Australias cricket team pulled
out in 2008 after the bomb blast in Lahore that left 26 dead. In addition to the effect on
the sports industry, Imran voiced his concern about how it is crippling the morale of the
sportsmen of this country. This resulted in a large loss of revenue and a downfall in
Pakistans position in the cricket world.
Similarly, verbal attacks on the cricket team and Pakistani supporters have become
frequent after the war on terror. It is indeed a very confusing position to play since the
government supported the US-led invasion of Afghanistan while also funding Taliban
groups. Such a messy situation leads to a detriment in ones esteem thanks to political
turmoil.
The law and order situation has deteriorated to such an extent that Pakistan, which was a
co-host for the 2011 Cricket World Cup, along with India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, has
been deprived of the opportunity. It is estimated that the PCB will lose $10.5 million, due
to the tournament being taken away from them. According to the Finance Division, in
terms of the economic impact, the fallout on Pakistan has also been immense

EFFECT ON TOURISIM INDUSTRY:

Life in Pakistan got worse after the war on terror when it ruined the tourism industry and
the people attached to it (also working for it) since this was an assault on their very
income. Hotels in Peshawar were forced to shut down due to security threats while the
famous Khan Klub (a very attractive tourist point) was brought to the verge of closure. It
hosted foreign guests only, but due to the scarcity of such appearances, it had to shut
down. According to statistics, more than a hundred local guest houses have been shut
down in the Northern Areas due to the frontline activism in the war on terror.
Similarly, tourism in Chitral, Swat and other Northern Areas had to shut down due to the
presence of the some radical organizations and their orthodox manners. An NTA is a
warning issued by a government to prevent its citizens from visiting certain countries;
this warning has been issued by the government along with other foreign bodies against
regions in Pakistan. Life in Pakistan post-9/11 and the war on terror also become terribly
difficult to live due to the labels and warnings USA and UK gave against traveling to
Pakistan. The tourism sector in Chitral and the Northern Areas has received a great
setback due to the war on terror. Had they lifted such warnings and issuances, tourism in
this country would not be viewed as a life threatening risk. A heartbreaking statistic
reveals that the war on terror claimed the lives of over 35,000 civilians and 3,500 security
personnel in Pakistan since 2006.

EFFECT ON ECONOMY OF PAKISTAN:

After assuming the role of a front line supporter of the war on terror, Pakistans economy
suffered a disruption in its normal trading activities. The cost of trading increased
because of higher insurance cover while the growth demands slowed down which
resulted in a decline in tax collection and foreign investment. The cost of Pakistans
involvement in the war on terror amounts to $67.93 billion or Rs. 5037 billion which has
affected the education budget, the health and nutrition sector and the sanity projects that
could have taken place but were halted due to the presence of the war against militancy in
Pakistan and Afghanistan.
After the war on terror, Pakistans investment-to-GDP ratio hit a downfall from 22.5
percent to 13.5 in just a few years. It requires a compensation for the resources it spent in
a pursuit that resulted in very little success. Economists firmly opine that Pakistan needs
to pull out of this war immediately. In spite of this uncertain and unreliable environment
Pakistan gave a warm welcome not only to the US assistance but the US policies towards
Pakistan also. The main reason was the destable and fragile economy of Pakistan that was
the fruit of a destable political system. The following table, growth performance of real
sector in Pakistan would be helpful to evaluate the economic situation of Pakistan at that
timeThe external capital flow towards Pakistan through the mentioned sources was
severely disturbed by its nuclear detonations in 1998. All the official donors to Pakistan
like IMF, World Bank, ADB and Japan withheld their support and imposed sanctions on
Pakistans economy. Resultantly, the balance of payment became highly vulnerable and
the countrys debt situation became worsened. From 1998 to 2001, economic situation of
Pakistan was highly destable. Foreign exchanged reserves were not sufficient13, financial
indiscipline was there. The international rating agencies had downgraded it to a selective
default level likely the September 11, event also directly or indirectly affected Pakistans
economy and it has been said that regular orders were cancelled or got delayed, investors
lost their confidence, travel to and from Pakistan became difficult. This was a brief
picture of Pakistans economy when it joined the US coalition against terrorism as a front
line state. It was observed that as an important ally Pakistans stability is of vital
impotence to the international community. Analyzing this factor, US government offereda
strong support to Pakistans military leader General Pervaiz Musharraf The extended
support from U.S was related to lifting up the sanctions that had been imposed on
Pakistan after its nuclear explosions in 1998 and after General Musharrafs 1999 Coup
suspended democracy. In this way the Glenn, Symington and Presseler amendments were
lifting up and US government provided legitimacy

MEDIA OVERTLY NEGATIVE ROLE:

A complaint largely felt by the nation and its regime is that the media has done a very
poor job at handling the gory details of the war on terror in the country. There were the
golden, olden days of PTV and STN when not knowing much was not exactly ignorance,
but a very calm feeling of being oblivious. That feeling of being unaware was legitimate
merely due to the fact that we were not constantly bombarded with images of decapitated
bodies and wailing people looking for their loved ones. Today there is an influx of
hundreds and thousands of images of not only dying people but unnecessary details about
people who dont necessarily deserve our time and attention. In fact, instead of remaining
objective and focusing on facts, the media has become a tool for rabid sensationalism,
focusing only on the juicy details of the private lives of government officials and
celebrities.
Today we have dozens of channels yet the information influx is entirely negative and
demoralizing. What good is such media?

EFFECT ON CITIZEN:
It is not Pakistans war, this is Americas war. This war has killed thousands of innocent
Pakistanis, women and children, states the PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) against the
war on terror. The drone attacks in Waziristan and other agencies in Pakistan have led to a
massive divide between the government and the average citizen. The majority believes
that Pakistani government betrayed the people by allowing drone attacks in the region (as
revealed by Wikileaks), while the government continues to win the support of the several
elites the country has.
In addition to the drone attacks, one can never forget how many lives were lost during
these years after the participation in the war on terror. Groups like TTP and other
extremists continue to destroy the sanctity and sanity of those living within the country.
Bombs explode, blasts occur, bodies are torn apart and children are attacked as a revolt
against the government. More than 10,000 Pakistanis have died in 2009-2010 alone
according to the HRP reports. This is mainly due to, as opined by the majority, the
involvement in the war on terror. Here is a depressinglist of terrorist incidents in Pakistan.
Citizens, young and old, employed and unemployed, political and apolitical, are often
asked for their input regarding the entire development over the past few years. Their

voice unites on a single point: Pakistan has lost many lives, resources and its basic peace
in this absurd pursuit against a faceless enemy. They want it to stop now!]

PAKISTAN AND U.S.A RELATION:

There are more than 2 million Muslims and around 4, 50,000 Pakistanis in the U.S and
have only one purpose i.e.to earn money. But these immigrants after 9/11 have been
mistreated by the U.S. Since 9/11, Pakistan has launched several military operations
against Taliban and Al-Qaeda in the tribal areas, which has provoked the Taliban and the
Al-Qaeda to carry their war deeper into Pakistan. It has resulted in more loss of lives than
9/11 attack. Pakistans support to U.S and NATO forces against Taliban and Al-Qaeda
which have widely implication as it continues to suffer due to this war
The end of cold war and September 11, 2001 has brought many challenges and
opportunities for the U.S and Pakistan. U.S policy makers understand and realize the
strategic importance ofPakistan in the region, where the U.S has vital economic and
strategic interests. At present, the U.S has a long term regional policy and its main
concern is to prevent terrorist activities and their spread. In short unequal partnerships
will sustain as long as commonality of interests prevail. Pakistan as a weaker partner is
usually willing to remain loyal to the United States if in return the U.S as a stronger
partner fulfils the weaker partners demands relating to its regional and local needs.
However, history teaches us that great powers hardly ever sacrifice their interests.
Pakistan has paid a big price in trying to help the international community against
terrorism. In spite of all these efforts, Pakistan has been criticised for not doing much in
the war against terrorism. Moreover, the U.S should treat Pakistan as an independent
entity and also respect the sovereignty of Pakistan. Only such policy can strengthen
credibility of partnership that uncertain policies can jeopardize.
The trust between the two nations can be strengthened only if the U.S approach towards
Pakistan remains consistent. US want Pakistan to become its colonized state, to serve the
interests of US. They interfere too much in internal affairs of Pakistan. After NATO
attack on Pakistan security forces, the government should formulate policies to ensure the
security of our land and people not the US interests. Therefore, it is now time for politicomilitary leadership of Pakistan to review their policies before this unconditional support
to US costs many more Pakistani lives.

SUMMARY :
Pakistans support to fight against terrorism has not been reciprocated by the US
government in the same spirit and the sincerity as shown by Pakistan. THE accelerated
growth in Pakistan was not due only to the US financial support or facilitation. Pakistan
as a nuclear power is too precious for the entire world. The developed world would not
tlike Pakistan to crumble as it would create chaos and might land the nuclear arsenal in
wrong hands. The support in war against terror to the US has infact proved to be counter
productive for Pakistans economy. As a front line state against war on terrorism Pakistan
is subjected to many restrictions. There is a travel advice to the western citizens against
travel to Pakistan. Pakistan conducts most of its trade with the US and European Union
infact more than 50% of our exports go to these two destinations. After travel advice, the
foreign buyers are reluctant to visit Pakistan. Many reputable international buying houses
that established their offices in Pakistan before 9/11 for procurement of value added
textiles from not only Pakistan but the entire region have shifted to Singapore, Hong
Kong and India. Pakistani businessmen are subjected to strict scrutiny for grant of visa.
The visas to lucky few are issued after considerable delayed. The one to one contact of
Pakistani businessmen with their foreign counterparts has been restricted or completely
denied. This has adversely impacted Pakistans exports. The foreign buyers have
exploited the situation to procure goods at lowest values. Pakistani knitwear is better in
quality than its competitors but fetch the lowest rates due to the denial of direct contact
with outside businessmen. The economy that was termed in the late 90s as the elitist
economy by Dr Ishrat Hussain has become more tilted towards the rich. The benefits of
high growth have largely benefited the rich. Infact only those benefited from the high
growth that had contacts with the out side world before 9/11.They gathered orders on
their past interaction and 12reputation while new entrants were denied market access due
to travel advice or visa denial.
Despite the concessional inflows of foreign aid, Pakistan faces economic, social and
political problems. There is massive income disparities, thirty one percent of Pakistanis
live below the poverty line. Pakistans public spending on social sector like health,
education, housing are among the lowest in the region. The government of Pakistan must
ensure that the fruits of Pakistans economic recovery trickle down to the people of
Pakistan. For the actual promotion and development of Pakistans economy following
policy options are required.
Not aid but trade is necessary.
U.S. should give market access to Pakistan for its textile sector
especially,
Transfer of technology is required that will provide Pakistan a base for
competition in the region.
Joint economic ventures should be made. These will helpful to create
Pakistan-US long term bilateral relationship and will remove the image
of Pakistan as a client state.

Visa restrictions should be eased for the Pakistani businessmen and

exporters.
Two third of U.S aid should be reserved for the development of
economic programmes and one third to security assistance.
Consistency in economic policies should be ensured through stable
political government.
