Abutterflyvalveisavalvewhichcanbeusedforisolatingorregulating
flow.Theclosingmechanismtakestheformofadisk.Operationissimilar
tothatofaballvalve,whichallowsforquickshutoff.Butterflyvalvesare
generallyfavoredbecausetheyarelowerincosttoothervalvedesignsas
wellasbeinglighterinweight,meaninglesssupportisrequired.Thediscis
positionedinthecenterofthepipe,passingthroughthediscisarod
connectedtoanactuatorontheoutsideofthevalve.Rotatingtheactuator
turnsthedisceitherparallelorperpendiculartotheflow.Unlikeaball
valve,thediscisalwayspresentwithintheflow,thereforeapressuredrop
isalwaysinducedintheflow,regardlessofvalveposition.
Abutterflyvalveisfromafamilyofvalvescalledquarterturnvalves.In
operation,thevalveisfullyopenorclosedwhenthediscisrotateda
quarterturn.The"butterfly"isametaldiscmountedonarod.Whenthe
valveisclosed,thediscisturnedsothatitcompletelyblocksoffthe
passageway.Whenthevalveisfullyopen,thediscisrotatedaquarterturn
sothatitallowsanalmostunrestrictedpassageofthefluid.Thevalvemay
alsobeopenedincrementallytothrottleflow.

Therearedifferentkindsofbutterflyvalves,eachadaptedfor
differentpressuresanddifferentusage.Thezerooffsetbutterfly
valve,whichusestheflexibilityofrubber,hasthelowestpressure
rating.Thehighperformancedoubleoffsetbutterflyvalve,usedin
slightlyhigherpressuresystems,isoffsetfromthecentrelineof
thediscseatandbodyseal(offsetone),andthecentrelineofthe
bore(offsettwo).Thiscreatesacamactionduringoperationtolift
theseatoutofthesealresultinginlessfrictionthaniscreatedin
thezerooffsetdesignanddecreasesitstendencytowear.The

Waferstylebutterflyvalves
Thewaferstylebutterflyvalveisdesignedtomaintainasealagainstbidirectionalpressuredifferentialto
preventanybackflowinsystemsdesignedforunidirectionalflow.Itaccomplishesthiswithatightlyfitting
seal;i.e.,gasket,oring,precisionmachined,andaflatvalvefaceontheupstreamanddownstreamsides
ofthevalve.

Lugstylebutterflyvalve
Lugstylevalveshavethreadedinsertsatbothsidesofthevalvebody.Thisallowsthemtobeinstalledinto
asystemusingtwosetsofboltsandnonuts.Thevalveisinstalledbetweentwoflangesusingaseparate
setofboltsforeachflange.Thissetuppermitseithersideofthepipingsystemtobedisconnectedwithout
disturbingtheotherside.
Alugstylebutterflyvalveusedindeadendservicegenerallyhasareducedpressurerating.Forexamplea
lugstylebutterflyvalvemountedbetweentwoflangeshasa150psipressurerating.Thesamevalve
mountedwithoneflange,indeadendservice,hasa75psirating.

Useinindustry
Inthepharmaceutical,chemicalandfoodindustryabutterflyvalveisusedtointerruptproductflow
(solid,liquid,gas)withintheprocess.Thevalvesusedintheseindustriesareusuallymanufactured
accordingcGMPguidelines(currentgoodmanufacturingpractise).
