This document provides instructions for modifying the front left engine mount on early model Toyota FJ Cruisers (1984-1990) to reduce engine vibration. It warns that the solid mount may be seized in place and difficult to remove without drilling. The instructions describe using a small drill bit to carefully drill around the mount in a circle to weaken its connection before trying to gently tap it out. Replacing the solid mount with a rubber mount will help isolate engine vibrations from the frame. Proper maintenance should be performed first to ensure any vibration issues come from the mount rather than other engine problems.

If you wish to reduce vibration on early model FJ (84-90) model then this mods may help. Before you attemp this mod please make sure your engine has had the valve clearance adjusted, the carbs are balanced (may wish to check the carb diaphragms is over 40k) and compress in the cylinders are all approx the same). Otherwise you will be wasting your time reducing vibration on a poor engine.
please dont ring me saying you have cracked the
casing, I have warned you. The chances is the mount wont move, if this is the case it will need to be drilled out. If you have limited ability of drilling or mechanical knowledge then please get profession help. To drill out mount its best done using a process called Chain Drilling. This means using a small 4mm drill and in a circle formation drilling the mount as close to the crank inner bore as possible without actually drilling into it. Once completely drilled this weakens the hold the mount has on the crank casing, so with a light oiling the mount should gently tap out.
The solid mount on the left hand side of engine
The FJ motor has five rubber mounts plus one solid mount at the top rear of the engine plus another on the front left hand mount. This is the one that we plan to replace with a rubber mount. The main reason for the solid mount is to reduce the twisting of the engine in the frame as you accelerate aggressively. Now that its main rule is a tourer this is not so much a problem.
Rubber mount fittied to reduce vibration
If you are still not successful, drill the mount in a diagonal direction so the mount is now in two halves, this should now allow it to be removed. Once removed clean the area up, removing any corrosion or damage incurred. Now its a simple matter of fitting new rubber mount and reassembling. This mod will allow the engine to be more isolated from the frame so reducing the amount of vibration into it.
Warning! becareful when removing solid mount
To remove mount you need remove the main front engine mount bolt and the triangle mounting bracket, this allows full access. This mount in theory simply is pulled out and a rubber mount fitted as per the opposite side. The problem lies in the 25 years this mount has seized itself into the engine lower crankcase. First is to spray wd40 type oil to see if it can release the mount. Then a gentle tap should be given and I do mean gentle,
The later models have the engine totally rubber
mounted in its three mounting points. Because the engine is used to brace the frame the later models have a thicker so stronger frame to take care of this. This mod on the early models doesnt have the same problem as the motor is still strengthening the frame due to the seven mounts as oppose to just three.
