Case Incident 1

RISE OF THE NICE CEO

SWOT
SWOT ANALYSIS
ANALYSIS

Question No. 1:
Do you think Sutton is wrong and that the contrasting fortunes, and
personalities, of Nardelli, McNerney, and Immelt are coincidental? Why or why
not?
For me, Robert Sutton wasnt wrong in his idea, because in reality it really has something to do
with a persons success rate. Nardellis, McNerneys, and Immelts fortunes and personalities
are not coincidental.

Like in McNerney and Immelts situation who are more approachable and

understanding to their employees. They acknowledge their employees opinion to

improve

the companys strategies and followed the No A-hole Rule.

Nardelli has the tendency of having a bad temper and notorious management. Employees

arent willing enough to take orders from him. Thats why the
tends to decrease.

productivity of the company

Question No. 2:
Do you think the importance of being "nice" varies by industry or type of job?
How so?
Yes, the importance of being nice varies by industry and type of job. In various industries and
jobs the CEO should act in different ways.
In Industries:

In Jobs:

Interaction with people is less required

Interaction with people is greatly needed

Less needed to be nice

High requirement of nice behavior

Objective of CEO must be incremental

Objective of CEO is to motivate others and

bring success with innovative ideas

approach

CEO has to behave in a strict way

Need to bring out both the physical and

sometimes

intellectual output

Question No. 3:
How comfortable would you be working in a culture like that of Success
Factors, where a certain level of "niceness" is part of the job description?

I will not feel comfortable by working in a culture like that of SuccessFactors where a certain
level of niceness is a part of the job description.
Because there may be an uncomfortable workplace for employees. Sometimes the employees
under supervision of CEO act aggressively but the CEO can not take any strict actions because
of following certain conditions.

Question No. 4:
Do you think being "nice" is the same as the Big Five trait of agreeableness? If
so, do you think companies should screen out those who score low on
agreeableness?
Yes, I think it is sort of similar.
According to Big Five Trait, people who are highly agreeable are cooperative, warm, ands
trusting as the quality of niceness.
The companies can screen out those who score low on agreeableness because they are cold,
disagreeable and antagonistic. But it also depends on situations, because some people who
scored high on agreeableness may not be as productive as company thought theyd be in the
end, because theyre focus would be on pleasing other people and not be more creative in
helping the company to progress.

Question No. 5:
Earlier we discussed the fact that entrepreneurs score significantly lower than
managers on agreeableness. How would you reconcile this finding with Sutton's
point?
Entrepreneurs scored low in these tests because:
Entrepreneur:

Manager:

They are soloist mainly

They work as a team

Interact with less people

Interaction with people is must

Less need to please their co-workers

Have to manage and satisfy their coworkers

Focus more on achieving the goals they

Focus more on achieving better work
