Design Document for

Blackboard Orientation Course

Purpose of the
Course

Based on helpdesk calls from past several semesters it was determined that students need an easily accessible orientat
to introduce them to the Genesee Community College configuration of the Blackboard Learning Management System.

Audience
Description

The primary audience for the navigation orientation is GCC's online students.
General Learner Characteristics:
Age: 16-100
Education: Current high school students (advanced studies program), recent high school graduates,
high school graduates pursuing a career change, older students pursuing enrichment courses,
students pursing degrees at other institutions. Large population of home schooled students.
Work experience: None to 25+ years
Financial: Most students are from a poor rural area often with limited or no access to technology.

The course consists of two part. Part 1 is Blackboard Skills and Part 2 is Student Success.
I am responsible for the Blackboard skills which consists of the following modules:
Blackboard Navigation Orientation, Assignment module, Assessment Module, Discussion
module, email Module, and My Grades Module.

1. Locate Assignment in the course


2. Click on link to the Assignment (Sections 1-4 referenced below is how Blackboard defines
areas of the assignment and are clearly visible in every Assignment)
3. Read Section 1 - the Assignment Information/Instructions
a. If attachment is required:
i. Go to section 2 and click the Browse My Computer Button.
ii. Locate completed Assignment file.
iii. Click the Open Button to add file to Assignment Tool.
iv. Verify filename is displayed under Attached Files.
v. Go to Section 3 to add optional comments to the instructor.
vi. Go to Section 4 and click the Submit Button to submit the assignment.
b. If text submission is required using the Assignment Tool:
i. Go to Section 2 and click the Write Submission Button.
ii. Type assignment in the text editor that is presented after clicking the Write
Submission Button.
iii. Proof read and spell check.
iv. Go to Section 3 to add optional comments to the instructor.
v. Go to Section 4 and click the Submit button to submit the assignment.
4. Review assignment confirmation information.
5. Click OK on the assignment confirmation page to return to course.

Wasnt quite sure what to include here? I listed the steps and clicks that I defined in the outline.
Some of the steps and clicks below will be done by the interactive training development software
i.e. Captivate and Camtasia. Some will be done by the student.

Development
Tools

[Mod 5 - list all tools that youll use to develop the course: primary authoring tool,
graphics tools, audio tools, storyboarding tool, etc.]
Development Tools include Audacity, Blackboard, PowerPoint, and Captivate

Ownership

Harold Strassner and Judith Littlejohn will develop different modules for the initial course;
and the Online Learning Office will maintain the course. The course is being developed
for the Online Learning Office at Genesee Community College.

I am the technical SME as well as the designer. I am also the Blackboard administrator so
I have access to all the Blackboard resources including the required development course
and all of the tools contained therein including the Assignment tool for which this lesson
is being designed. I also have a licensed copy of Captivate and Camtasia installed on my
machine for creating and deploying the lesson content.
