Hardware Description
2 BTS3900 System
The BBU, a baseband processing unit, enables interaction between the base station and the
BSC.
The RFU, a Radio Frequency (RF) filtering unit, performs the functions such as modulation
and demodulation between baseband signals and RF signals, data processing, and
combining and division of signals.
The indoor macro cabinet houses the BBU and RFUs. In addition, the cabinet performs the
functions such as power distribution, heat dissipation, and surge protection.

The GSM Transmission & Timing & Management Unit for BBU (GTMU) is the basic
transmission and control function entity of the BBU. It provides the reference clock, maintenance
port, and external alarm collection port, monitors the power supply, and controls and manages
the entire base station.
Panel
The GTMU is classified into two types: GTMU and GTMUb. Figure 4-4 and Figure 4-5 show

Functions
The GTMU has the following functions:
l
The GTMU provides and manages the clock source of the base station in centralized mode.
The GTMU supports transmission through four E1s and two FEs.
The GTMU provides CPRI ports for communication between the BBU and the RFUs.
Four IDX2 ports on the backplane of the GTMUb can achieve the function of baseband
resource pool backup.

UPEU
This describes the Universal Power and Environment Interface Unit (UPEU) board. It is a
mandatory board of the BBU3900 that converts -48 V or +24 V DC to +12 V DC.
Panel
The UPEU is classified into the Universal Power and Environment Interface Unit Type A
(UPEUA) and the Universal Power and Environment Interface Unit Type B (UPEUB). The
UPEUA converts -48 V DC to +12 V DC and the UPEUB converts +24 V DC to +12 V DC.
Figure 4-6 shows the UPEUA panel and Figure 4-7 shows the UPEUB panel.

4.10.2 PMU
The Power and Environment Monitoring Unit (PMU) performs the power system management,
power distribution detection, and alarm reporting functions.
Functions
The PMU has the following functions:
l
Communicates with the BBU or upper-level PMU through an RS232/RS422 serial port
Detects and reports water damage alarms, smoke alarms, door status alarms, and
customized Boolean values
Reports the ambient temperature, ambient humidity, battery temperature, and customized
analog values
Monitors power distribution, reports related alarms, and reports dry contact alarms
Structure

Structure
The E1/T1 cables are of two types: 75-ohm E1 coaxial cable and 120-ohm E1 twisted pair cable.
One end of the E1/T1 cable is a DB26 male connector. The connector at the other end of the
cable should be made on site according to site requirements. Figure 5-22 shows an E1/T1 cable.

6.2 EMU
Environment Monitoring Unit (EMU) is an environmental monitoring device that monitors
environmental conditions of the equipment room.
EMU connects to main equipment and performs monitoring functions through the alarm cables.
The EMU has the following functions:
l
Providing monitoring ports. The EMU provides monitoring ports for the temperature,
humidity, water, infrared, and door control sensors. Additionally, it provides monitoring
ports for Boolean value, analog, and output control.
Providing communication ports. The EMU provides two kinds of communication ports,
RS485 and RS232, for communication with the BTS.
For details on the structure of the EMU, see EMU User Guide.
