AN ORDINAL
CLASSIFICATION FOR THE
FAMILIES OF FLOWERING
PLANTS
ABSTRACT
Recentcladisticanalysesare revealingthe phylogeny
of flowering
plantsin increasingdetail,and thereis support
forthe monophyly

established,a revisedsuprafamilial

classification
plantsbecomesbothfeasibleand desirable.
Here we presenta classificationof 462 flowering
plantfamiliesin 40 putativelymonophyletic
ordersand a small
numberof monophyletic,
informal
highergroups.The latterare the monocots,commelinoids,
eudicots,core eudicots,
rosidsincludingeurosidsI and II, and asteridsincludingeuasteridsI and II. Underthese informal
groupsthereare
also listeda numberoffamilieswithoutassignment
to order. At the end ofthe systemis an additionallistoffamilies
of uncertainpositionforwhichno firmdata existregarding
placementanywhere
withinthe system.
Our primary
focusis on orderswitha secondary
emphasison familiesofflowering
plants.The family
is centralin flowering
plant systematics. For example, in studyingan unknownplant we usually
firstidentify
it to family. The orders,on the other
hand, have untilquite recentlybeen of littleimportance, eitherbeingmorphologically
unrecognizable or in mostcases lackingany evolutionary
coherence (Heywood, 1977; MerxmUller,1977).
However,ordersare usefulin teaching,forstudying
