Acorn Hat Crochet Pattern

Materials: Stitch marker, measuring tape, yarn needle.


Yarn: 4.5 oz or less of worsted weight yarn in dark brown, small amounts of tan and green.
Gauge: 15 stitches and 7 rows in dc = 4 x 4 (10 cm x 10 cm) with 6 mm hook. (See checkpoint also.)
Hook Size: J (6 mm), smaller hook may be necessary for brim. -- I use Boye brand crochet hooks.
Size Chart:
0-3 Months: 12-14 circumference
3-6 Months: 14-16 circumference
6-12 Months: 16-18 circumference
Toddler/Child: 18-20 circumference
Teen/Adult: 20-22 circumference

Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc): Working from the front, YO and insert the hook from right to left
under the post of the double crochet indicated from the previous round. YO and complete the stitch as a
double crochet.

Assembly: Roll up the long way and use yarn needle and long tail end to sew together
to form a stem shape. Fasten off near bottom and use the two tail ends to attach to top

Top spike: ch 4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, (hdc, dc) in next ch, sl st in the
first ch of the opposite spike (it has the 2nd st of the decrease in it). (5)
Middle spike: ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, 2 dc in next
ch, sl st in first ch of the opposite spike. (6)
Bottom spike: ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next
ch, 2 dc in next ch, do not sl st yet. (7)
Stem of leaf: ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and ea ch st back to leaf, use invisible join
to join in base of first spike, leave 10 tail.
Assembly: Using yarn needle and tail end of yarn (on wrong side of leaf), weave up
the middle and back down again to close any gaps. Fasten off, use both tail ends to
attach on either side of a stitch on the hat, sew down the middle of the leaf to fasten
securely to the hat. Let spiky leaf ends stick up.
