Abrasive type, performance and storage

Grit or Garnet shall be used as abrasive as determined by the degree of
cleanliness and surface amplitude requirements.
Abrasive shall be kept dry and clean. Regardless of type of abrasive, the
sulfate, chloride and calcium carbonate contents shall not exceed the
level as per relevant customer standards.
Prior to blasting, contamination like grease, oil, dirt, etc. present on the
substrate if any shall be removed by solvent cleaning. Use of kerosene,
diesel or other degreasers that leave an oily film shall not be used. Use
of non-greasy solvent shall be applied for degreasing.

Abrasive blasting shall be carried out only when the steel surface is at
least 3C above the dew point and also the relative humidity of the air is
less than 85%.
Prior to blasting, rough welds and cut-offs shall be ground smooth and
weld spatter shall be removed.

Compressed air supply

The compressed air supply shall be free of oil, moisture and
contamination. Air quality shall be checked at the start and mid-point of
each 8 hour period.
For determining the quality of compressed air supply, blotter-test shall
be performed by attaching a piece of blotter paper to a clip board and
shall be held approximately 45 - 60 cm in front of the blast nozzle
during air flow only, with a nozzle pressure of 50 psig for approximately
one minute. Presence of no water, oil or other contaminations results for
quality compressed air supply.
Abrasive blasting machines shall be fitted with an abrasive regulating
valve and moisture and oil separators to ensure all air passing through
the equipment is clean and dry.
Spray painting machine will be of the airless type and will be fitted with
moisture and oil separators and pressure control valves.
For safety operations, an operational dead-man remote control valve
shall be attached to the nozzle. Minimum operating nozzle pressure for
blasting steel shall be 90 psig.
Storage of paint materials
All paint materials and thinners shall follow manufacturers instruction
with regards to storage temperatures and other details.

Paint container that shows signs of leakage shall not be used.

Prior to coating, paint shall be checked for its manufacturing date and
ensuring the shelf life not exceeded as stated in Manufacturers Data
Sheets.
Paint, which has gelled, shall not be used. Prior to application all paint
shall be thoroughly mixed until it becomes homogeneous.

Environmental conditions during painting

During painting application the substrate surface temperature shall be
at least 3C above the dew point temperature. Also, the relative
humidity shall be less than 85%.
Painting activities shall not be carried out during strong wind, sand
storm, and rain or salt spray & poor lighting.
Prior to the paint application the substrate shall be checked for abrasive
dust or any other foreign contaminants.

Stripe coating shall be performed on hard to reach areas, but not

limited to welds, edges, etc.
Paints to be sprayed shall be filtered through a 30 to 60 mesh screen
prior to use and shall be continuously agitated with a low speed stirrer
during application.
Wet film thickness shall be measured during the time of paint
application.
After the coated surface is ready for dry paint thickness measurement,
it shall be checked in accordance with measurement of Dry Paint
Thickness with magnetic gauges as specified in SSPC-PA 2.
Recoating intervals shall be adhered as per the manufacturers
recommendations.
Finished coating shall be free from runs, sags, blister or foreign matter
and shall be in uniform appearance.

Profile: 40-65 microns

Primer Coat: Hempels Galvosil 15780 @ 80m DFT
Finish Coat: Hempels Hempadur Mastic 45881 @ 140m DFT
Total DFT: 220m DFT

Repair/Rework
Before mechanical treatment is started, surface to be repaired shall be
cleaned from any salts or contamination.
Area less than 0.25 square meter (as per SSPC-SP2)
The surface preparation can be executed by grinding to a clean rough
metal surface, leathering edges of coating and slightly sanding the
adjacent surface.
Clean wash with thinner.
Touch-up to full thickness with minimum number of required coats shall
be applied.

Area above 0.25 square meter (as per SSPC-SP2)

The surface preparation must be executed by vacuum blasting or open
nozzle blasting so that the steel has a proper roughness and cleanness
to SA 3 according to ISO 8501:1988.
The overlapping zone must be sanded or sweep blasted to ensure a
good adhesion of the new paint.
Inspection and Certification
Final DFT shall be checked with magnetic gauge.
The total dry film thickness must not exceed 120% of the maximum
DFT nor shall it be less than 80% of the minimum DFT.
Documentation
As per the inspection as detailed above, necessary report shall be filled and
documented.
