Josephus Antiquites 8.2.5 5. Now the sagacity and wisdom which God had bestowed
on Solomon was so great, that he exceeded the ancients; insomuch that he was no
way inferior to the Egyptians, who are said to have been beyond all men in under
standing; nay, indeed, it is evident that their sagacity was very much inferior
to that of the king's. He also excelled and distinguished himself in wisdom abov

not unacquainted with any of their natures, nor omitted inquiries about them, b
ut described them all like a philosopher, and demonstrated his exquisite knowled
ge of their several properties. God also enabled him to learn that skill which e
xpels demons, (4) which is a science useful and sanative to men. He composed suc
h incantations also by which distempers are alleviated. And he left behind him t
he manner of using exorcisms, by which they drive away demons, so that they neve
r return; and this method of cure is of great force unto this day; for I have se
en a certain man of my own country, whose name was Eleazar, releasing people tha
t were demoniacal in the presence of Vespasian, and his sons, and his captains,
and the whole multitude of his soldiers. The manner of the cure was this: He put
a ring that had a Foot of one of those sorts mentioned by Solomon to the nostri
ls of the demoniac, after which he drew out the demon through his nostrils; and
when the man fell down immediately, he abjured him to return into him no more, m
aking still mention of Solomon, and reciting the incantations which he composed.
And when Eleazar would persuade and demonstrate to the spectators that he had s
uch a power, he set a little way off a cup or basin full of water, and commanded
the demon, as he went out of the man, to overturn it, and thereby to let the sp
ectators know that he had left the man; and when this was done, the skill and wi
sdom of Solomon was shown very manifestly: for which reason it is, that all men
may know the vastness of Solomon's abilities, and how he was beloved of God, and
that the extraordinary virtues of every kind with which this king was endowed m
ay not be unknown to any people under the sun for this reason, I say, it is that
we have proceeded to speak so largely of these matters.
In between Psalm 89-91 in the Dead Sea Scrolls were found 4 "exorcism" psalms, 3
of which were never seen the 4th being Psalm 91. In the second exorcism psalm i
t speaks of Solomon invoking the spirits and demons. The psalm is not complete a
nd only fragments were found, thus a complete picture is impossible. Encyclopedi

ervice the labors of the genii for the construction of his celebrated Temple....
Of all talismans, there is none, except, perhaps, the cross, which was so genera
lly prevalent among the ancients as this Seal of Solomon or Shield of David. It
has been found in the cave of Elephants, in India, accompanying the image of the
Deity, and many other places celebrated in the Brahmanical and the Buddhist rel
igions. In Medieval Jewish, Islamic and Christian legends, the Seal of Solomon w
as a magical signet ring said to have been possessed by King Solomon (or Sulayma
n in the Islamic version), which variously gave him the power to command demons
(or jinni), or to speak with animals. In one of the Arabian Nights' Entertainmen
ts, an evil djinn is described as being imprisoned in a copper bottle for 1,800
years by a lead seal stamped by the ring. Other, later books (Pseudomonarchia Da
emonum) manage to fit far more demons in the bottle (Wikipedia, Seal of Solomon,
I Kings 11:4-9 For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, [that] his wives turne
d away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD h
is God, as [was] the heart of David his father. For Solomon went after Ashtoreth
the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites

1. The Talisman of Saturn became known as the Seal of Solomon. In the Book The H
istory and Practice of Magic, Vol. 2, the six-pointed star is called the talisma
n of Saturn and it is also referred to as the Seal of Solomon[1] From James Faus

the star of your god — R. Isaac Caro says all the astrologers represented Saturn
as the star of Israel. Probably there was a figure of a star on the head of the
image of the idol, to represent the planet Saturn; hence “images” correspond to
“star” in the parallel clause. A star in hieroglyphics represents God (Num_24:1
7). “Images” are either a Hebraism for “image,” or refer to the many images made
to represent Chiun.

Jarchi on 2Ki_23:24, says, the teraphim are images that speak by sorcerers or so
rceries; and to such evils the followers of the man of sin are addicted, Rev_9:2
1 and the Jews (l) have a notion that those images were so formed, that they wer
e capable of speaking and talking with men; see Hos_3:4 they seem to confound th
em with the "talisman": The star of David is believed to be the "talisman of sat
urn"

These shrines, or images, were borne with them as a species of amulet, charm, or
talisman to defend them from evil. Such images the Jews seem to have carried wi
th them.
"The Universal Jewish Encyclopedia declares that the SIX-POINTED STAR...accordin
g to the Rosicrucians...was known to the ancient Egyptians" (Graham, p. 13 as ci
ted in Aho). Regarding Star-Worship, the Jewish Encyclopedia says, This is perha
ps the oldest form of idolatry practised by the ancients. According to Wisdom xi
ii. 2, the observation of the stars in the East very early led the people to reg
ard the planets and the fixed stars as gods. The religion of the ancient Egyptia
ns is known to have consisted preeminently of sun-worship. Moses sternly warned
the Israelites against worshiping the sun, moon, stars, and all the host of heav
en (Deut. iv. 19, xvii. 3); it may be said that the prohibition of making and wo
rshiping any image of that which is in heaven above (Ex. xx. 4; Deut. v. 8) impl
ies also the stars and the other celestial bodies. The Israelites fell into this
kind of idolatry, and as early as the time of Amos they had the images of Siccu
th and Chiun, "the stars of their god" (Amos v. 26, R. V.); the latter name is g
enerally supposed to denote the planet Saturn (Seligsohn, et al.).
