SECTION 3

HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW:
PHYSICAL/CHEMICAL:

Avoid contact with melted product and inhalation of hot vapors.

Hot product is combustible.
Floats on water. May obstruct sewers and water intakes.
Inhalation: Vapors from hot waxes may result in irritation to the respiratory tract.
LC50: 12 g/m3/30min. (ihl-mus) (Polyethylene).
Ingestion / Aspiration: This route of exposure is easy to avoid, and not frequent.
Intestinal absorption is very low. The product does not present toxicity by
ingestion:
LD50=>15 g/Kg (rat) (Paraffin wax).
LD50:>3g/kg (0ral-rat) (Polyethylene).
Contact skin/eyes: Practically non-toxic if it is absorbed. Exposure to heated
product may cause burns. LD50=> 2 g/Kg (rat) (Paraffin wax). Contact with the
product may cause irritation. Heated or molten product may cause burns.
General toxic effects: In solid state it does not present any contact hazard to skin
or eyes and any inhalation hazard or if it is swallowed. Overexposure to fumes
generated from heating may cause nausea, irritation to eyes, nose, throat, and
respiratory tract.
Health: 1
Flammability: 1
Chemical Reactivity: 0

TOXICITY (SYMPTOMS):

HMIS HAZARD RATINGS:

Redezon 517P

*NOTE:

HMIS rating involves data interpretations that may vary from company to
company. They are intended only for rapid, general identification on the
magnitude of the specific hazard. To deal adequately with the safe handling of
this material, all the information contained in this MSDS must be considered.

SECTION 4

FIRST AID MEASURES

INHALATION:
INGESTION/ASPIRATION:

In case of inhalation of vapors, move the person to fresh air.

Not frequent, but small amounts which accidentally enter mouth should be rinsed
until taste is gone.

CONTACT SKIN/EYES:

GENERAL MEASURES:

In case of hot wax burns, cool the liquid material quickly with plenty of water; it
is not recommended to remove the solidified wax without medical assistance. Call
a doctor, and treat as a normal hot-burn.
Seek medical attention.

SECTION 5

FIRE-FIGHTING MEASURES

EXTINGUISHING AGENTS:
NON-SUITABLE EXTINGUISHING AGENTS:
COMBUSTION PRODUCTS:

PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:

Water sprays, CO2, foams, and dry chemicals.

NP.
Total combustion: CO2 and water. Incomplete combustion: CO, soot, aldehydes,
ketones, hydrocarbons.
Do not suffocate fires with straight streams which may scatter the material. Cool
containers with water.
Autoflammability can occur when glass fiber isolation from wax pipelines
becomes saturated with wax due to leaks or accidental spills and after heating the
pipeline (i.e. with water vapor). Unburned vapors may result in suffocation if
breathed.
Heat-resistant suit and gloves. Self-contained breathing apparatus.

SECTION 6

ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS:
ENVIRONMENTAL PRECAUTIONS:
PERSONAL PROTECTION:
METHODS FOR CLEANING UP:

Avoid contact with molten product and vapor inhalation from hot waxes.
The material is solid at room temperature. There is low hazard of physical fouling.
Gloves and goggles against hot liquid splashes are recommended.
Solid spills are shoveled into containers for later recovery or disposal. Liquid
spills are removed after solidifying.

SECTION 7

HANDLING AND STORAGE

HANDLING:

General Precautions: Avoid contact with molten product. Paperboards and paper
containers impregnated with wax burn easily. Do not eat, drink, or smoke in areas
where the material is handled.
Specific conditions: Protective mask in presence of hot vapors from molten
product.
Specific Use: Rubber and rubber tires.
Temperature and decomposition products: NP.
Dangerous reactions: NP.
Storage conditions: Stored in form of pearls in containers properly labeled and
sealed. Avoid the spreading of the material in accidental releases. Security firefighting systems.
Incompatible materials: Strong oxidants and flames.

SECTION 8

EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION

PERSONAL PROTECTION:

Respiratory protection: Protective mask in presence of hot vapors.

Skin protection: Gloves when handling molten product.
Eye protection: Safety goggles when handling the molten/heated product to avoid
splashes.
Other protective equipment: Showers and eye-washes in working areas.
Avoid contact with melted product and inhalation of hot vapors.
Good work practices and the adoption of good personal hygiene measures reduce
unnecessary exposures. Wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling the
product. Appropriate protection measures should be installed in areas where
inhalation of the product might occur.
TLV/TWA (ACGIH): 2mg/m3 (Paraffin wax fumes).
PEL/TWA (OSHA): 2mg/m3 (Paraffin wax fumes).
REL/TWA(NIOSH): 2mg/m3 (Paraffin wax fumes).

TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

ROUTES OF EXPOSURE:
ACUTE AND CHRONIC EFFECTS:

Vapor inhalation and contact with skin and eyes. Ingestion is not frequent.
In solid state it does not present any contact hazard to skin or eyes and any
inhalation hazard or if it is swallowed. Overexposure to fumes generated from

SECTION 12

ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION

POLLUTANT POTENTIAL:

Persistence and degradability: Waxes have straight hydrocarbon chains with low
water solubility, which slows down the biodegradation process, not stopping it. It
is not readily removed from the aqueous environment.
Mobility/ bioaccumulative potential: No bioaccumulative problems in living
organisms or incidence in the tropic food chain.
Waxes are insoluble and solid at ambient temperature, not presenting significative
physical, meaning a proper cleaning when spills occur. This product is not
expected to represent a long-term danger to the aquatic environment.

ECOTOXICOLOGICAL EFFECTS:

SECTION 13

DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

DISPOSAL METHODS (SURPLUS):

WASTE:

Recycling and recovery of the material when possible.

Liquids and solids from industrial processes.
Disposal: Specific prepared and controlled areas and incineration. Wax clay
treatment produces residual clay cakes with up to 50% paraffins; they can be
employed as industrial furnace fuel, disposed of in controlled areas, or incinerated.
Handling: Labeled and sealed containers. Avoid direct contact with waste.
Provisions: Companies which recover, dispose of, store, transport, or handle
waste should comply with Dir. 91/156/EEC on waste, or other local, national, or
community provisions.
