MORRIS WALL-PAPERS.

"T1IE DAI SY,"

"The earliest Morris wall-paper issued

was 'The Daisy,' a quaint pattern consisting of plant groups of Daisies, Columbines, etc., dotted at regular intervals on
the field, in a manner so formal as none
but a master of design could have ventured to do.

"Tile rv1rt

"TilE TRELLIS."

"The first wall-paper to be designed

(Nov., I 862), th ough it came third in
order of production, consists of a trelli s,
which gives its name to the pattern, intertwining roses, somewha t stiff ill growth,
and brow n (or blue) birds among the
branches. Morris refrained from designillg
the bird forms, preferring to have them
drawn by Mr. Philip Webb.

"' T h e Acanthus' is a magnificent desig n.

The grand sweep of the foliage, the rich
and varied g radations of its colouring, produce a sumptuous ea:Cc t which indicates the
hi ghest att ainable point in paper-staining,
and such that could sca rcely be surpassed
even in tapestry-\veav ing. The pattern is
so elaborate that it requires a double set of
blo cks, and can not be produced with less
than 32 prjntings."
" Till: e/frt qf William Manis" :

" The first se ries of Morris wall-papers

MORRIS WALL-PAPERS.

" T il E PL\TPER:\EL.

"Tbe Pimpernel" is one of the early

stately series of design s by William Morri s,
and is most popular as a dining-room or
library paper, printed in sbades of green.
It is one of the papers which wears i ndefinitely, and acquires a ricbness with age
which no new production can imitate.

"T Il E JAS ~Jl X I': ' "

"The Jasmine," as the illustration shows,

is a light and graceful design, mostly
printed in soft sbades of green . It, and
"The Scroll," a similar paper, make admirable backgrounds for pictu res.

"A superb design, which it is impossible

to praise in terms too high . Conceived
on broad mediceval lines, it forms a decOl'ation which upon the walls of a fifteenth
century buildin g is in perfect accord with
its surroundings. M ore in its favour could
not well be said."

"The Willow Bough s " is a slightly

more naturalistic design than the earlier
" Willow" which it otherwise resembles.

Probably the most popular of all William

Morris's designs for monochrome wallpapers. It is printed in a great vari ety
of shades, and ha s also bee n emb osse d in
gold and bronze colours.

" The Apple" i one of the leas t expensive papers to print, and perhaps partly
for that reaso n h as a very wide vogue.
