PRIVATE LAND

CONSERVATION CONFERENCE
THE QUEENSLAND TRUST FOR NATURE INVITES YOU TO ATTEND THE INAUGURAL
PRIVATE LAND CONSERVATION CONFERENCE IN BRISBANE ON 23 AND 24 AUGUST.
THE AGENDA
The Private Land Conservation conference will provide the opportunity for you to meet and engage with other Nature Refuge
owners and private land conservation experts, and to discuss your unique commitment to protecting our environment, the joys
and challenges of this stewardship and the opportunities that exist for eco-tourism, carbon and offsets - just to name a few.
Sunday 23 August
Day one of the Conference is dedicated to a series of networking field trips taking in land and economic management
at the award winning Spicers Hidden Vale Nature Refuge and QTFNs innovative koala sanctuary near Ipswich.
Monday 24 August
The second day heads to the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre to draw on the knowledge of the scientific
community, land users and regulators.
The day is separated into four sessions and themes:
Session one: The state of play hear from regulators,
academics and not-for-profit and business operators
about the status of private conservation today.

Session three: Ask an Expert an interactive workshop


session covering ecotourism, carbon, biodiversity offset
and alternate market ideas for your property.

Session two: Stewardship styles an interactive panel


session discussing the different approaches to managing
privately conserved areas.

Session four: Q & A give your views on the good


and the bad of private conservation and what mission
accomplished looks like for privately protected areas.

Keynote Speakers INCLUDE:


Tony Charters AM

Tony has over 20 years experience in tourism planning, development and management in the public and private sectors.
He was a founding director of Ecotourism Australia and has served continuously on the EA board since 1991. For
many years he served on the board of The International Ecotourism Society and recently joined the Board of the Global
Ecotourism Network and the Asian Ecotourism network.
Jane Hutchinson, BSc, LLB (Hons)
Jane is CEO of the Tasmanian Land Conservancy (TLC), a non-for profit, non-government, environmental organisation
with a vision for Tasmania as a global leader in nature conservation and sustainability. Under her leadership, the TLC has
achieved several multi-million dollar conservation projects, established a $10 million Fund to achieve long term financial
sustainability and developed innovative financial mechanisms to support nature conservation in Tasmania.
Brendan Mackey PhD
Brendan is the Director of the Griffith Climate Change Response Program at Griffith University. Brendans research
addresses the interactions between climate change, biodiversity and land use. He is a member of the IUCN and serves on
various governmental advisory bodies including the science advisory group to the Climate Change Commission. He has
written over 150 academic publications including journal articles, books and book chapters.

Robert Murphy
Rob was appointed to Bush Heritage Australia in 2013 and has over 22 years experience in conservation land management
within Queensland. Rob has a passion for conservation, and for the dedicated people who manage these areas. Rob was
recently awarded a Churchill Fellowship to investigate the role of Private Conservation Organisations in the management of
Protected Areas.
Martin Taylor
Martin Taylor is WWF-Australias Protected Areas Policy Manager and has published important analyses on the effectiveness
of conservation actions in Australia including protected areas for threatened species. He has served on the Scientific
Committee of the International Whaling Commission and as an NGO observer at CITES. He is a member of the IUCN World
Commission on Protected Areas.
