Dear Parent/Carer
School Uniform
I wanted to thank you for your continued support this term with regards to school uniform. I know as a parent how difficult it can be to ensure that
teenagers stick to school uniform rather than introducing their own fashionable twist on items of clothing for school. From the first day of the new
academic year in September this will be looked at more closely and addressed more than ever to ensure that all learners are in correct uniform
and ready to start the school day. Several learners have, over the past few months come to school in items of clothing that stretch the guidelines
for school uniform and I wanted to put these in writing to you so that we are all aware of what the expectations are for learners and to enable you
as parents to encourage them to adhere to these throughout the year.
Blazers
Blazers are to be worn at all times, except in instances of hot weather when an announcement will be given to all learners that these can be
removed. Learners may wear a winter coat over the blazer to and from school or bring the blazer in their bag to change into as soon as they
arrive. The school badge must be worn on the breast pocket.
School Ties
School Ties are to be worn by all learners at all times with the knot being as close to the collar/top button as possible. At least three stripes must
be visible on the tie and must not be shorter than 12 from the knot.
Shirts
Boys must wear a white shirt with all the buttons fastened, no sleeves to be rolled up and the bottom of the shirt must be tucked in the trousers.
Girls must wear a white school shirt which must be long enough to be tucked in to the trousers or skirt - the fitted type of blouse that some of our
female learners have worn in the past have been too fitted to enable this. Could parents please ensure that the fitted type blouses are not
purchased as these are not allowed.
Trousers/Skirts
Black trousers are to be worn by boys and these must not be canvas or jean type black trousers. Only school type trousers may be worn and not
fashion trousers e.g. skinny jeggings etc. Girls may choose between black school trousers or a black school skirt. Again the trousers must be
school trousers and not fashion jeggings or canvas jeans. The skirt should be plain black and no shorter than knee length. Fashion skirts e.g.
stretched lycra must not be worn. To differentiate between school/fashion trousers for both boys and girls, the pockets must be on the inside and
not stitched onto the outside of the trousers.
Tight/Socks
Girls may choose to wear either black knee length socks or plain black tights when wearing a skirt.
Shoes
All learners are to wear black school shoes. Trainers of any description or colour are not to be worn other than for PE. Boys and girls wearing
trousers may wear plain black boots but only when they can be hidden by the bottom of trousers. Fashion boots/shoes are not to be worn e.g.
UGG boots or Doc Martins. During the winter months if learners travel to and from school in boots they must have a suitable pair of black school
shoes to change eg. Wellington type boots.
PE Kit
All learners are to wear plain black shorts or jogging pants with a plain black T-shirt or polo shirt with no branding or logos other than the college
logo. A plain black hooded top can be worn during the winter months this is the only occasion that hooded tops are to be worn in college.
Jewellery
We have seen an increase in the amount of jewellery that learners are wearing; this includes bangles, anklets, rings etc. With the exception of a
wrist watch and one pair of stud earrings no other items of jewellery are allowed.
Hair
Hair must be of a natural colour, no bright hair colours or extreme haircuts e.g. shaven close to the head or in patterns.
Once again can I thank you for your support in this matter. If you require any further clarification on the guidelines above please do not hesitate to
contact Mrs Woodhouse, Assistant Principal Behaviour and Safeguarding on the number above or by email jwoodhouse@dartoncollege.co.uk
Yours sincerely
