Judo
Judo,literally,thegentleway,or,thewayofyielding,isa
Japanese martial art founded by Dr. Jigoro Kano in 1882
primarilyfromTenjin Shinyo ryu and Kito ryu JuiJitsu. The
various schools of JuiJitsu practiced in nineteenth century
Japanwererootedinamartialtraditionhundredsofyearsold.
Schoolsdifferedinbothemphasisandstrategy,somefocused
onNagewaza,throwingtechniques,othersonKatame waza,
ground techniques, still others on Atemi waza, striking
techniques. Strategy varied from seizing the initiative with an
immediate attack, an approach favored by Japanese
swordsmanshiptoharmonizingwithanopponentsattack,and
bydoingso,renderingitharmless.
Dr.Kanowasanundersized,sicklychildwhobeganhisstudyof
TenjinShinyoryuJuiJitsuattheageofeighteeninaneffortto
improvehishealthunderFukudaHachinosuke.Tenjin Shinyo
ryuJuiJitsuassignedimportancetoachievingharmonywithan
opponents attack, yet also included grappling and striking
techniques. Dr. Kano later studied Kito ryu JuiJitsu under
TsunetoshiIikubo,whichplacedastrongemphasisonthrowing
techniques. During this time, Dr. Kano also undertook a
systematic study of other schools of JuiJitsu, notably
Sekiguchi ryu and Sigo ryu, Sumo, western wrestling and
boxing and works such as the I Ching, the Chinese Book of
Changes,andtheTaoismofLaoTsze.
At the age of twentytwo, Dr. Kano integrated grappling and
strikingtechniquesgleanedfromTenjin Shinyo ryu, throwing
techniquesfromKitoryu,theresultsofhismartialartsstudy
into a new comprehensive martial art: Judo. In the course of
doingso,heremoveddangeroustechniqueswhichallowedfull
contact,fullspeedrandorifreepracticesparringwithoutfearof
seriousinjury.Dr.Kanosmartialartincorporatestheconcepts
of Seiryoku Zenyo, and Jita Kyoei. The former is defined as,
maximum efficiency with minimal effort, which enables a
slightindividualtoovercomeamuchlargeropponentthelatter
is translated as, mutual benefit, a moral precept in which
respect,trustandmutualconsiderationareinculcatedbyJudo
practice and carried into the world at large. Dr.Kano
establishedhisfirstschool,theKodokan(thehallforstudying
theway)intheEishojiBuddhistTempleinTokyo,Japan.The
firstKodokanhadonlyninestudentstrainingontwelvetatami
matsmeasuringtwelvebyeighteenfeettodaytheKodokanhas
over five hundred tatami and more than a million visitors
annually.
