Maximum Permissible Dose (MPD) and ALARA

Various studies on the effects of X-radiation have provided a foundation for establishing the maximum permissible
dose of radiation to which an individual might be exposed. The results of these studies have been used by the
National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) and International Commission on Radiological
Protection (ICRP) to develop recommendations for the MPD. Federal and state agencies have incorporated these
recommendations into their regulations for MPD.
See the Safety and Regulatory Information for additional safety information.
