"It is not legally or morally acceptable that these so-called schools of choice
that are concentrated in urban communities and supported with public funds,
should be permitted to operate as segregated learning environments where
students are more isolated by race, socioeconomic class, disability, and
language than the public school district from which they were drawn."

Charter schools enrolled a lower percentage of

students with disabilities than traditional public schools,
but little is known about the factors contributing to
these differences. In school year 2009-2010, which
was the most recent data available at the time of our
review, approximately 11 percent of students enrolled
in traditional public schools were students with
disabilities compared to about 8 percent of students
enrolled in charter schools.

Special Education in New Orleans Public Schools |

Added by rdsathene 2 years ago

Public education in post-Katrina New Orleans held the

promise of providing superior educational opportunities
to New Orleans children. Unfortunately, that promise is
not equally available to all students. Despite the fact
that federal law requires publicly funded schools to
educate students who may have disabilities, many
New Orleans schools are closing their doors to these
students.

Charter Schools Still Enroll Fewer Disabled Students

Charter schools in most states continue to enroll

proportionately fewer students with disabilities than
traditional public schools, a new government report
shows. Across the country, disabled students
represented 8.2 percent of all students enrolled during
the 2009-10 year in charter schools, compared with
11.2 percent of students attending traditional public
schools, according to a Government Accountability
Office analysis of Department of Education data.

I got this today from Charlie Wysong, Staff Attorney for Equip for Equality. It's
about EFE's new report on Chicago charter schools and their failure to
provide adequate services for students with disabilities. The evidence is
attached to EFE's open letter to schools CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett.
