Marshall Tuck is not qualified to be CA

State Superintendent of Public Instruction
If you live in the State of California, under no circumstances consider Marshall
Tuck for State Superintendent of Schools. Neoliberal education privatizer Tuck
is angling for Torlakson's seat, but the only thing he should be doing is a
lifetime of hard labor for crimes against the students and families of Los
Angeles. Tucks callous and racist closure of heritage language programs and
ethnic studies programs at PLAS must be brought up over and over, not to
mention his abject failure at Green Dot Corporate Charters. Non-educator
Marshall Tuck should never be allowed near schools ever again!

The Crucial Race for State Superintendent in California |

The race for State Superintendent of Education in California pits veteran

educator Tom Torlaksonwho has held the job since 2010against Marshall
Tuck, who is closely associated with the privatization movement. A third
candidate, Lydia Gutierrez, is notable in the race for her opposition to
Common Core. With the unions supporting Torlakson and the business
sector behind Tuck, Gutierrez is considered a long shot.
The election will be held on June 3.
Gary Cohn, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter, profiled the two
men.
Cohn writes about Marshall Tuck:
The 40-year-old Tuck is a Harvard Business School graduate who has
worked as an investment banker for Salomon Brothers and as an executive
at Model N, a revenue-management software company. He is a former
president of Green Dot Public Schools, a charter school operation in Los
Angeles, and later served as the first head of the Partnership for Los
Angeles Schools former Mayor Antonio Villaraigosas controversial
education nonprofit that tried to improve 17 low-performing public schools,
with mixed results.
Tucks candidacy is supported by the same mix of wealthy education
privatizers, Silicon Valley and entertainment money, hedge fund and real
estate interests that backed privatization candidates in the 2013 Los Angeles
Unified School District school board election when billionaire businessmen
such as Eli Broad and Michael Bloomberg gave large campaign contributions
to an unsuccessful effort to defeat board member Steve Zimmer. (The Broad
Residency, an education management program operated by the Broad
Foundation, lists Tuck as an alumnus.)
Torlakson, by contrast, takes pride in his years as a teacher. Torlakson is a
veteran science teacher and track coach. Torlakson, who is still a teacher on
leave from Contra Costa Countys Mount Diablo Unified School District, says
he usually teaches one community college course every year. He was
elected as Californias 27th State Superintendent of Public Instruction in
2010 after serving in the state legislature.

candidate for the office, this backing by reactionary billionaires has made for
the possibility of him being elected. The doting corporate media has
recklessly ignored the dismal performance of the schools he managed, the
astonishing remediation rates of students he claimed were college ready,
his racist shuttering of Ethnic Studies programs, and his closure of
Heritage/Dual Language Programs. All in all, Tucks record has been one of
failure and bigotry.

Will California Elect an Educator or an Investment Banker

California is in the midst of a crucial election for State Superintendent. This

article by Gary Cohn describes the players and the context.
On one side is experienced educator Tom Torlakson, who is running for reelection.
On the other side is Marshall Tuck, graduate of Harvard Business School,
investment banker, former leader of Green Dot charter schools. He is a
strong supporter of privatization of public education and has attracted support
from the usual crowd of entrepreneurs, millionaires, billionaires, etc.
California now has more charter schools than any other state in the nation. If
Tuck wins, the privatization movement will gain a major stronghold.
Start here to understand the setting for this crucial campaign:
An election campaign now being fought almost completely out of public view
could radically alter the way Californias school children are taught. If
Marshall Tuck unseats incumbent Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom
Torlakson, the states public education system could become a laboratory for
a movement that prizes privatization and places a high value on student test
scores over traditional instruction. The contrasts between the two top
contenders in the nonpartisan race could not be more dramatic nor could
the stakes for the countrys largest education system.
The 40-year-old Tuck is a Harvard Business School graduate who has
worked as an investment banker for Salomon Brothers and as an executive
at Model N, a revenue-management software company. He is a former
president of Green Dot Public Schools, a charter school operation in Los

Charter Advocate Seeks to Oust Tom Torklakson | Diane

California State Superintendent of Schools Tom Torlakson is

one of the best education leaders. As an experienced classroom
teacher, he knows what teachers and students need. As a veteran of
the Merchant Marine, he has a steady hand on the tiller. As a
former legislator, he knows how to work with the legislature. He
had the wisdom and foresight to avoid Race to the Top, knowing that
a win would cost the state $3 billion to comply with federal
mandates. Naturally, the billionaires cant stand Torlakson because
they dont control him. Worse, he does not share their ideology of
blowing up public education and calling it innovative. So they
are running a candidate against Tom Torlakson. He is Marshall Tuck, who
ran Mayor
Villaraigosas 15 schools and compiled a mediocre and unimpressive
record. He has also been president of the Green Dot charter chain.
One of Tucks big issues: he wants teachers to be evaluated by student test
scores.
This is a bad policy that has led to teaching to the test,
narrowing the curriculum, and firing good teachers who teach the
neediest children. With the support of the corporate reformers,
eager to privatize as many public schools as possible, Tuck can
count on big money from the big-money guys who tried to unseat
Steve Zimmer (and lost) and then got beaten by a teacher with no
outside funding, Monica Ratliff.
Tom Torlakson deserves to be
re-elected. He is a fighter for kids, teachers, and public
education. He understands the importance of public education in a
democracy.
