Animate Projects 2015 programme consultancy briefs

Animate Projects is a curator/producer led arts charity based in Derby and London.
We champion creative animation practice, with a mission to produce projects of high
artistic merit with artists and partners that connect a wide public to the creativity and
craft of animation. www.animateprojects.org
We want to appoint consultants to help assess the impact of 1) a creative practice
development programme and 2) animation exhibition and cinema touring.
We aim for a dynamic and imaginative approach to assessing our work, its value and
impact, with findings that are reflective and forward looking, not only for the specific
activities, but also the broader arts and film ecology.
Job one (artists development programme): DRIVE
We will soon announce the five artists selected to take part in this ten-month creative
development programme for UK based artists working with animation.
DRIVE will provide support to develop professional, craft, creative (rather than
technical) and business skills, through individual mentoring and group workshops. As
part of the process we will engage a wider professional and public audience with
creative animation practice, through events and online documentation of participants'
process and progress.
DRIVE has been developed with, and is generously supported by, Jerwood Charitable
Foundation, and is also supported with public funding by the National Lottery through
Arts Council England.
Brief
This is an innovative programme and we are keen to know what lessons we might
learn to inform the development of future development initiatives.
We seek a consultant with an understanding of mentoring, professional and practice
development. The consultant will assess the immediate impact of the programme on
the participants and any evidence, including testimonial, of its value and effectiveness.
We are also interested in evidencing the demand for this work eg by way of a narrative,
(anonymised) summary analysis of DRIVE applications (with some statistics) eg
identifying the areas of practice, ambitions, and in the wider context of initiatives
supporting artists animation development.

Job two (animation exhibition and touring, audience engagement):

Parts & Labour and Move It
Parts and Labour is an exhibition for gallery, online and cinema exhibition, selected
from an international open call. The gallery exhibition opens at QUAD in Derby on 27
November 2015.
Move It is an animation exhibition initiative developing four new touring programmes,
and connecting programmers, exhibitors, animators and audience across the UK.
Animate OPEN and Move It are supported by the This Way Up Exhibition Innovation
Fund, a partner of the BFI Film Audience Network and using public funding by the
National Lottery through Arts Council England.
Brief
At the exhibition at QUAD we are primarily interested in how audiences engage with
and respond to the work.
Touring in the UK is a new activity for us and we are interested in reflecting on the
challenges that it presents us, and our partners. The Move It related work should
consider any existing research on cinema touring of animation and other specialised
cinema, including other players, practical considerations, challenges, costs and
financial models. We are interested in the potential of sharing experience with/of other
organisations that distribute or present touring programmes of experimental, animation
and artists moving image, and the potential to establish standards of practice.
Timescales, Fee, Application
DRIVE: The artists have been selected; the programme runs until March 2016, and the
deadline for a final report will be early April 2016. The fee is 1,600 to include all
expenses. We will pay travel and accommodation costs if the consultant attends the
meet up in Derby.
Parts & Labour/Move It: The Parts & Labour exhibition opens at QUAD on 27
November 2015. Move It launches in winter 2015/16. The deadline for a final report is
March 2016. The fee is 3,000, inclusive of all expenses.
These are two distinct jobs requiring different experience and expertise, but we will
consider single/joint applicants.
