Brochure
Description:
A trifold folding brochure.

Date:

11 July 2015

Objective:

Create a simple and unique brochure that

informs potential customers and clients about a
business, the employees and the products.

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 5
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator and
InDesign

Process:
I began my
design process in Adobe Illustrator,
where I created a logo. By using the ellipse tool
and a triangle with converted edges, I was able to make
the main image and I then used two fonts for the type. I then
went into Adobe Photoshop and worked on my images to
make what I needed transparent, using the brush tool and a
layer mask. Next, I wrote the content, using Microsoft Word. After
I had all that I needed, I placed everything in Adobe InDesign. I
organized it in a trifold manner by splitting up the document into
three section (using ruler guides) and I marked the panels each
portion was in by using a sketch on a piece of paper.
Bit by bit, I placed each piece approximately where it needed to be,
I resized certain items using the transform tool, and then I added color
to the panels using the rectangle tool in InDesign. I needed to go back to
Photoshop for placing the logo on the cup, because it needed a little curve
to better give the effect of the logo being on the cup. So I used the puppet
warp function on the transform tool and gave the image the curvature it
needed.
Then I arranged everything in InDesign where it needed to be, I
added a gradient to one page, applied the preset fonts, and added
paragraph styles to the text. Everything appeared to fit, until I
printed and cut out my brochure. Some of the text got cut out and
so I needed to adjust the spacing. After I made my adjustments,
everything fit on the page better without being cut out.
The end product looked exactly the way I wanted: like a cup
of delicious Italian Ice with a pleasing color scheme.

Imaging
Description:

Images taken personally and edited to be more appealing

Date:

23 May 2015

Objectives:

Implement basic photography skills using a digital

camera, edit the exposure and size/crop the image
to the preferred image dimensions.

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 5
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Sony a77 Camera
Nikon D7100
Adobe Photoshop

Process:

My photographic process
is very natural to me. I usually plan out
my shots in terms of how I will compose my image
and where I need to be to get the shot I need. Sometimes, I
have to hold my camera up high and stand on tables, chair or
stairs and other times I am down on my stomach just to get low
enough. Equipment is necessary, I anticipate the weather and
location to figure what types of lenses, reflectors, and/or flashes
I need in order to get a great shot. The rest is really up to how the
subject reacts to me. If there is a subject that does their own thing, I
have to shoot accordingly. Other times I can compose my subject and
have them do what I need. Whatever it is, I get the shot.
Afterwards, I go into my editing programs, Lightroom and Photoshop. I do my basic editing in Lightroom because it is an easy, combined
version of bridge and camera RAW, and that does the majority of my
needs. Then, if needed, I do my in-depth adjustments in Photoshop. I make
whatever adjustments are necessary to properly expose an image. I can
make my image artistic in a natural and beautiful way, but that is against
my photographic philosophy. I prefer to publish things as they actually
are and what I can do with the camera, not with the computer.

Logo
Description:

Variations in logos for a specific company.

Date:

6 June 2015

Objectives:

Produce a logo for a company with a look similar to

the company message.

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 5
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Process:

This was a great project

for making a logo for my website. I really
wanted to show the aspects of photography and the
idea of going anywhere for fun adventures. I wanted the
design to be simple, so I wanted a few shapes and little to no
variation in color. Using the ellipse, polygon, line and pen tool,
I was able to make the map pinpoint with the look of a camera
aperture. Inside I put in a simple san serif abbreviation of the
site with the full name on the side with the tag line underneath. I
wanted to have the shadow on one to give the look of the pinpoint
standing up on a map, like in many maps applications used in the
mobile internet world of today. To do that, I simply copied the main
logo, recolored the aperture blades and text, applied a Gaussian blur,
transformed the image to look like a shadow and reduced the opacity.

Flier
Description:

A promotional flier printed in black and white.

Date:

9 May 2015

Objectives:

Use design and typography principles to create an

aesthetically pleasing flier.

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 5
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign

Process:

After being given a

select group of images to work with and
a selection of logos to use, I selected one image and
a logo to use for the flier. I then selected two complimentary
fonts and went into InDesign. There, I organized the prewritten text with the selected fonts and inserted the image. I
wanted some white space, but also an image that bled from top
to bottom. As a result, I shited the image to the right and used
a gradient on the left side of the image to naturally transition to
the white space. Lastly, I inserted the compant logo in a spot that
blended in perfectly.

Event Ad
Description:

A colorized advertisement for an upcoming event.

Date:

16 May 2015

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 5
Ben Pingel

Objectives:

Make a advertisement using only a scanner

for images and Microsoft Word.

Program(s)/Tools:

Epson Scanner
Vue Scan (scanning software)
Microsoft Word

Process:

I began with a color scheme

that I wanted to use and I them went
through images that could be used in conjunction
with the event. After finding the right image, I scanned it in
and loaded it into Microsoft Word. The image worked best as a
full-bleed and then finding the right fonts was simple and easy.
I placed the fonts in a aesthetically pleasing manner and finalized the advertisement.

Montage
Description:

A montage highlighting a principle of a church organization.

Date:

31 May 2015

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 5
Ben Pingel

Objectives:

Incorporate layers in Photoshop.

Blend together multiple images in a
single photograph using layer opacity
and masking.
Incorporate appropriate
typography.

Program(s)/
Tools:

Adobe Photoshop

Process:

1. I made my canvas size to

be 118.5.
2. I got the images I wanted to use in the graphic.
3. I organized the images in terms of order and masked out
what I did not need.
4. I then used masking layers for certain edits and the dodge
tool to fix some exposures.
5. I used a serif font, because I felt the look went with the message, and placed it immediately above the family.
6. I then added a texture to the image and used the overlay blending mode at a 60% opacity.

Letterhead
Description:

Matching letterhead and business card designed using a personally

created logo.

Date:

15 June 2015

Objectives:

Create a logo for a company and consistently use it

in all documents of that business.
Implement basic Illustrator and InDesign tools.

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 5
Ben Pingel

Programs(s)/
Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign

Process:

By using the pen tool

in Adobe Illustrator, I was able to create a
W and V that was similar to a wavelength. To get a
consistent shape, I placed one set of guides equidistant from
each other and another pair perpendicular to the first set of
guides. After creating the custom text that also worked for the
logo, I searched for a font that matched the style of the W and
V and went along with the business.
I then put the logos into separate adobe InDesign documents
implementing a simplistic design and color scheme. I wanted the
logo to right to the edge, but I wanted a small border for the body
type. The body type was simply the name and contact information and
it really needed to contrast from the white, so black was chosen. There is
also a lot of white space on the card, because business cards usually get
written on by the client to give out with an extra personal touch.
For the stationery, I wanted to have uniform elements, but with
minimal differences. The result was something similar to the business card,
but combining the front with the back. The watermark was a little tricky,
because there was some difficulty finding the line between too much
and too little watermark legibility. After a few tests, the result was what
was envisioned.

Web Design
Description:

A web page to showcase the design for the logo of a personal business website.

Date:

27 June 2015

Objectives:

Use an original logo in a website.

Write content describing the creative process of
designing the logo.
Design a web page using HTML and CSS

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 Section 5
Ben Pingel

Program(s)/
Tools:

Adobe Illustrator
Microsoft Word
NetBeans

Process:

I created this web page

using NetBeans. I previously have had
some experience reading and writing in HTML and
CSS, so making a web page as simple as this was easy.
Fortunately, NetBeans has a built in validator, so if something
was not right, it would let me know what was wrong with the
coding until the issue was resolved.
The cascading style sheet (CSS) was pretty simple to make, I
used another pre-written style sheet and modified it to my needs. I
inserted an image and was good to go, in terms of form. I also gave
the text a margin, border and padding. My colors were pulled directly
from the logo, which I made previously, and I grabbed the color
code from the Digital Color Meter application found on every Apple
computer. I changed my fonts to Myriad Pro and Rockwell and used
some fonts of similar styles and font families as a backup. The backup fonts
were used just in case the anothers browser didnt have the fonts installed
on the computer.
