Mazeppa Area Food Shelf serving

Mazeppa, Bellchester, Zumbro Falls is
open the second and fourth Thursdays
ZUMBROTA Kids can spend the days exploring fun and sponta- of each month at 239 1st Avenue from
neous theater games and the art of improvisation, or audition for and 4-7 p.m. Drop off donations at WDs Bar

camps.
Both Imagine This! The Art of Improv and Musical Theater:
The Sound of Music, run August 3-14 (skip the weekend), each for
half the day, so kids can take both camps if they choose. The camps are
open to youth entering grades 2 through 12.
By playing games and learning to take risks in a safe environment
in Imagine This! camp, campers will develop an ability to tell stories
collaboratively and work in the moment. Improv is an excellent tool
for improving self-expression, listening skills and body awareness,
and for boosting self-confidence ... all while having a gargantuan
blast! Instructors from the Minnesota SkyVault Theatre Company.
Youth who love to sing and act can do both in a junior version of

DNR QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Apply by Aug. 14 for youth deer

hunts at state parks and refuges
Minnesota youth have from now until Friday, Aug. 14, to apply for
one of 18 special deer hunts in October and November .
Youth can hunt in select state parks and other refuge areas with a
parent, guardian or mentor during these annual opportunities, said
Mike Kurre , Minnesota Department of Natural Resources mentoring
coordinator. One -on -one time with a youth is time well spent afield
by making memories only the outdoors can provide.
Of the 18 special hunts, 16 are firearms hunts for youth ages 12 to
15, and two are archery hunts for youth ages 12 to 17.
Participating in a youth deer hunt does not prevent the youth from
participating in the regular firearms deer season, but any deer harvested do count against the youths season bag limit. An adult parent
,guardian or mentor must accompany the youth at all times while
hunting, but only the youth may hunt. Both y outh and mentor must
attend a mandatory pre-hunt orientation clinic .
A limited number of either-sex permits are available for the following hunts . (However, the hunt in Buffalo River State Park is only for
antlerless deer.)

Firearms hunts

The 16 firearms hunts are for youth ages 12 to 15.

Afton State Park, 25 permits, hunt is Nov. 7-8, clinic is Oct. 24.
Banning State Park ,six permits, hunt is Oct. 31 to Nov.1 ,park will
mail clinic information.

Nov. 20.

8,refuge will mail clinic information.
St. Croix State Park, 90 permits, hunt is Oct. 31 to Nov.1 ,clinic is
Oct. 24 or 30.
Savanna Portage State Park I,20 permits, hunt is Oct. 2 4-2 5,clinic
is Oct. 23.
Savanna Portage State Park II, 20 permits, hunt is Oct. 31 to Nov.1,
clinic is Oct. 30.
Sibley State Park, 10 permits, hunt is Oct. 24-25, clinic is Oct. 23.
Tettegouche State Park, 10 permits, hunt is Oct. 17 -18, clinic is
Oct. 16.
Zippel Bay State Park, 20 permits ,hunt is Oct. 24-25 ,park will mail
clinic information.
This year, there are new youth hunts in Kilen Woods, Sibley and
Savanna Portage state parks. A nd the hu nt in Lake Bemidji State Park
adds an extra day to make for three days of youth deer hunting.
Youth must apply for the hunt of his or her choice, which can b e
done at any DNR license agent, the DNR License Center at 500
Lafayette Road in St. Paul, or online at www.mndnr.gov/buyalicense
.For archery hunts, apply with code 630; for firearms hunts, apply
with code 631.
If the number of applications exceeds the number of permits, the
DNR will conduct a lottery. Youth may only apply for one archery
hunt and one firearms hunt. Successful applicants also must meet all
firearms s afety requirements, purchase appropriate licenses and follow hunting regulations.
In addition to the 18 application-only hunts in state parks and refuge
areas, any y outh ages 10 to 15 can also participate in the youth deer
season that runs from Thursday, Oct. 15, through Sunday, Oct. 18 , in
27 permit areas that encompass portions of southeastern and northwestern Minnesota and portion s of the Twin Cities metro area.
For more information on these hunts and more, visit www.mndnr.gov/

Apply for mentored youth

waterfowl hunts by Aug. 10
Youth ages 12 to 15 can apply for the chance to hunt waterfowl
under the gu idance of experienced mentors on Minnesota Youth
Waterfowl Day, Saturday, Sept. 1 2.
Mentored hunts teach youth the skills needed for safe and enjoyable hunting, and they gain an appreciation of t he interconnection
between land ,water and wildlife, said Mike Kurre, mentoring program coordinator with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources .
The DNR has teamed up with Du cks Unlimited, the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service, and the Minnesota Horse & Hunt Club to offer the
hunts, which will take place in six areas:
Hamden Slough National Wil dlife Refuge near Detroit Lakes.
Southern Twin Cities metro area locations.
Morris Wildlife Production Area near Morris.
Sherburne County private land between Fairmont and Windom .
Private land in Fergus Falls.
Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge near Zimmerman.
Application forms must be received at the DNR central office by
Monday, Aug. 1 0. Applicants will be drawn in a lottery, with preference given to novice hunters. Applicants will be notified within two
weeks o f the hunt, and those chosen must attend an orientation on
Friday, Sept. 11.
More information and an application form can be found at
www.mndnr.gov/discover by clicking on Mentored Youth Waterfowl H unt.

Q: Are there statewide rules about where I can place my dock?

A: Statewide rules do not specify where a dock needs to be placed.
However, there are a few rules to keep in mind. You need to own or
control the land from which your dock originates, avoid posted fish
spawning areas, and you cannot install a dock that obstructs navigation or creates a water safety hazard.
Docks and lifts should be placed so that mooring and maneuvering
of your watercraft can normally be confined within your property
lines as if they were extended into the water perpendicular to the
shoreline. Due to the curvature of some shorelines and the configuration of lots, sometimes property lines extending into the water can run
at angles rather than perpendicular to the shoreline.
When the shoreline curve is tight, the water level low, or an additional dock is installed, conflict can be minimized by the dock owners
working together to arrive at the best placement, or by sharing a
common dock.
There are some counties and communities in Minnesota that have
adopted ordinances to regulate lot line setbacks and other aspects of
dock placement. Your local planning and zoning office should be able
to answer questions about local restrictions on dock placement.

archery to beginners.
If youd like to create some unforgettable outdoor experiences
with your kids but dont know how to get started, the I Can! skillbuilding programs are designed for you, said Erika Rivers, Parks and
Trails Division director . Minnesota has amazing state parks, trails
and water trails, and we want to spark interest in more families to get
out and enjoy them.
The I Can! program sare made possible with support from the Parks
and Trails Fund, created after voters approved the Clean Water, Land
and Legacy Amendment in November 2008. The Parks and Trails
Fund receives 14.25 percent of the three-eighths percent sales tax
revenue that may only be spent to support parks and trails of regi onal
or statewide significance.

DNR seeks comment on Solid Bottom

Creek Restoration Project
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is accepting public comment on an environmental assessment worksheet (EAW) prepared for the Solid Bottom Creek Restoration Project in Becker County.
Solid Bottom Creek is a trout stream in Becker County that is
eroding a steep hillside ,contributing sediment to the stream and
Elbow Lake. The DNR is proposing to move the stream away from the
hillside to reduce erosion and improve habitat conditions for brook
trout and other species. The agency will take comments during a 30day public review from July 6 to Aug. 5.
A copy of the EAW is available online at www.dnr.state.mn.us/
input/index.html . Under Environmental Review, select Solid
Bottom Creek Restoration Project from the scroll-down list. A hard
copy may be requested by calling 651-259-5 082 .
The EAW is available for public review at:
DNR Library, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul .
DNR Northwest Region, 2220 Bemidji Ave. Bemidji, MN 56601.
Minneapolis Central Library, Government Documents, 2nd Floor,
300 Nicollet Mall.
The EAW notice will be published in the July 6 EQB Monitor.
Written comments must be submitted no later than 4:30 p.m. on
Wednesday, Aug. 5, to the attention of Kate Frantz, EAW project
manager, Environmental Policy and Review Unit, Ecological and
Water Resources Division, DNR, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul, MN
55155-4025.
Electronic or e mail comments may be sent to
environmentalrev.dnr@state.mn.us with Solid Bottom Creek Restoration Project EAW in the subject line.
