ABSTRACT
The aim of this study is to understand and determine the perception to
the influencing factors to commit substance abuse and its effects of the
adolescent citizens of Brgy. Patimbao, Sta. Cruz, Laguna. Specifically it
sought to answer the following questions: (1) What is the demographic data of
the respondents in terms of age, gender; (2) What are the influencing factors
that contribute to substance abuse in terms of psychological, behavioral,
social; (3) What are the perceived levels of effects of substance abuse on
health in terms of physiological, psychological, social; (4) What substance
have

the

highest

level

of

abuse:

alcohol,

nicotine,

cannabis,

methamphetamine.
The study used descriptive method of research used to analyze data
about the perceptions about the influencing factors to commit substance
abuse and its effects, the respondents were forty (40) adolescent citizens of
Brgy. Patimbao, Sta. Cruz, Laguna.
The study utilized a questionnaire method to gather data. The
questions were based on the related literature and studies taken from the
internet and journals. In the first part of the study, the researcher used
structured type of questions for the demographic profile which include: age
and gender. The second part is the list of different factors that contribute in
committing substance abuse, the most common substances abused and the
effects of substance abuse under the structured type which had used scaling.

Responses to these instruments were then statistically treated and


descriptive statistics was the average score of the items; the standard
deviation to determine the dispersion of the score.
The findings of the study revealed as to (1) demographic profile of the
respondents are on the 16-18 age category having 22 percent; 37 (twenty) or
92.4 percent of the respondents are males, and 3 (three) or 7.4 percent of
them were females. (2) Most of the respondents ranked depression, having a
mean of 4.6, as the greatest psychological factor that can lead to substance
abuse as anybody can experience it especially adolescents some time in life.
(3)Most of the respondents ranked rebelliousness, having a mean of 4.5, as
the greatest behavioral factor that can lead to substance abuse as any
adolescent can rebelliousness means negative identity of self and can thus
direct a person to try things that are negative too, like substance abuse. (4)
Most of the respondents ranked peers using alcohol and drugs, having a
mean of 4.9, as the greatest social factor that can lead to substance abuse
because being with peers that are using drugs and alcohol, a person can be
greatly influenced, develop peer pressure and end up doing substance abuse
too. (5) Most of the respondents ranked cannabis, having a mean of 4.9, as
the most common substance being abused as it has relaxing effects and it
can be planted so there will be no spending of so much money.
