Main Findings

1.1

The Structure of Malaysian Economy, 2010

The structure of Malaysian economy by commodity flow of goods and services


based on supply and demand is shown in Figure 2. The total supply of goods
and services in 2010 was RM2,676.4 billion of which 77.5 per cent was
contributed by domestic production, 21.7 per cent by imports and 0.8 per cent by
taxes less subsidies on products. The total value of domestic production was
RM2,074.2 billion where goods and services contributed 54.6 per cent and 45.4
per cent respectively. Meanwhile from the total imports of RM582.0 billion, the
contribution of goods was 86.7 per cent while services was 13.3 per cent.

The total demand for goods and services in 2010 was valued at RM2,676.4
billion of which 47.4 per cent was used as intermediate demand and 52.6 per cent
as final demand. In terms of intermediate input, goods contributed 71.1 per cent
and services 28.9 per cent. As for the final demand, 51.3 per cent was recorded
by domestic demand and 48.7 per cent by exports.

Gross value added in 2010 registered RM805.2 billion with compensation of


employees accounting for 32.3 per cent, operating surplus 66.5 per cent and
other net taxes on production 1.2 per cent.

Comparison of Structure of Malaysian Economy, 2005 & 2010

1.2.1 Domestic Output

The total domestic output of Malaysia's economy in 2010 was RM2,074.2 billion
(2005: RM1,603.9 billion) which increased with an average annual growth of 5.3 per
cent in the period of 2005 to 2010. The major contributor to domestic output was

secondary industry 50.3 per cent, followed by tertiary industry 38.4 per cent and
primary industry 11.3 per cent as shown in Table A and Chart A. The secondary
industry contributed RM1,043.8 billion in 2010 (2005: RM995.4 billion). The annual
growth of domestic output for secondary industry was 1.0 per cent on average for
the period of 2005 to 2010. In 2010, Manufacturing sector was the main contributor
for secondary industry and recorded 86.7 per cent (2005: 90.4 per cent). This was
followed by Construction sector with 8.8 per cent in 2010 (2005: 6.1 per cent) and
Electricity, Gas & Water sector with 4.5 per cent (2005: 3.5 per cent).

Total

Tertiary industry contributed RM796.2 billion (2005: RM453.1 billion) from the total
output in 2010. It recorded an annual growth of 11.9 per cent on average for the
period of 2005 to 2010. Wholesale & Retail Trade sector was the main contributor in
tertiary industry and recorded 25.1 per cent of production in 2010 (2005: 17.1 per
cent). The second contributor was Transport & Communication sector which
accounted for 20.7 per cent in 2010 (2005: 26.4 per cent). Meanwhile, Finance &
Insurance sector contributed 18.3 per cent (2005: 16.4 per cent).

Primary industry contributed RM234.2 billion in 2010 compared to RM155.4 billion in


2005. The annual growth for this industry was 8.5 per cent on average for the period
of 2005 to 2010. Agriculture, Fishery & Forestry sector was the main contributor to
this industry and recorded 54.1 per cent in 2010 (2005: 38.6 per cent). Meanwhile,
Mining & Quarrying sector contributed 45.9 per cent (2005: 61.4 per cent).

1.2.2 Intermediate Input

The total intermediate input in 2010 was RM1,269.0 billion (2005: RM1,094.6 billion),
an increase of 3.0 per cent on average for the period of 2005 to 2010. Secondary
industry remained as the main contributor with 63.8 per cent for 2010, followed by
tertiary industry 30.8 per cent and primary industry 5.4 per cent, as shown in Table B
and Chart B.

The Manufacturing sector remained as the largest contributor with 89.0 per cent
(2005: 91.8 per cent) of the total value recorded by the secondary industry. The
Construction as well as Electricity, Gas & Water sectors registered 7.8 per cent and
3.2 per cent respectively.

Meanwhile, the tertiary industry contributed RM389.7 billion or 30.8 per cent in 2010
(2005: 21.5 per cent) of the total intermediate input. It recorded an annual growth of
10.8 per cent on average for the period of 2005 to 2010. Transport & Communication
sector was the highest contributor with 27.5 per cent, followed by Wholesale & Retail
Trade and Finance & Insurance sector registering 22.2 per cent and 18.2 per cent
respectively.

Primary industry was valued at RM68.2 billion in 2010 (2005: RM45.0 billion). The
annual growth rate recorded by this industry was 8.7 per cent on average for the
period of 2005 to 2010. The biggest contributor was Agriculture, Fishery & Forestry
sector with 72.8 per cent (2005: 50.9 per cent), followed by Mining & Quarrying
sector with 27.2 per cent.

1.2.3 Value Added

The total value added in 2010 was RM805.2 billion (2005: RM509.3 billion),
increased at the rate of 9.6 per cent on average. The main contributor was the
tertiary industry which posted 50.2 per cent, followed by secondary industry 29.1 per
cent and primary industry 20.6 per cent, as shown in Table C and Chart C.

In 2010, tertiary industry contributed RM404.3 billion (2005: RM218.7 billion). The
average annual growth of value added increased 13.1 per cent for the period of 2005
to 2010. Wholesale & Retail Trade sector was the main contributor registered at 27.8
per cent (2005: 24.3 per cent). The second highest contributor was Finance &
Insurance sector which increased 18.3 per cent in 2010 (2005: 17.3 per cent). The
value added for Government Services sector increased 17.4 per cent (2005: 15.5 per
cent).

The value added of secondary industry in 2010 was RM234.6 billion (2005: RM181.2
billion) increased by 5.3 per cent on average for the period of 2005 to 2010.
Manufacturing sector accounted for 78.8 per cent in 2010 (2005: 83.6 per cent)
followed by Construction sector with 11.9 per cent (2005: 8.7 per cent).

The primary industry recorded RM166.2 billion in 2010 (2005: RM109.4 billion). The
annual value added growth increased 8.7 per cent on average for the period of 2005
to 2010. The major contribution was from the Mining & Quarrying sector which
registered 53.7 per cent (2005: 66.9 per cent), followed by Agriculture, Fishery &
Forestry sector with 46.3 per cent (2005: 33.1 per cent).
