A Partnership Missionary Outreach to the Peoples of Poland, Belarus & Ukraine

20 YEARS OF GMRM'S MINISTRY

With the beginning of the year of 1997, GfViRM

enters Its twentieth year of Christian ministry in
Central and Eastern Europe. However, even

Jesus Christ in these countries of our origin:

Belarus, Poland and Ukraine. We knew the people
and we knew the languages. The challenges of life
in these places were familiar to us and we were

es growing stronger, new congregations started,

tons of Christian literature printed and distributed,
the Gospel being preached on local radio stations,
Bible-teaching in schools and seminaries devel
oped, children and youth work encouraged and
various kinds of local missionary outreach con
ducted by local believers.
This must be pleasing to our heavenly Father,
and we thank God that we can be a part of this
great spiritual awakening that is occurring in lands
that so recently were still closed to the Gospel
message. We look forward to new challenges and
God's blessings as we continue to work with your
help and encouragement throughout the year of
1997. May it be so until Jesus comes!
One new and growing phase of GMRM's min
istry is helping and encouraging young Christian

students from the countries where we are involved,

before this time, we were involved in similar mis

sionary outreach, but done under different names
and different organizational structures. For
instance, George Repetski was working with John

K. Huk through Toronto Christian Mission. George

Bajenski had his own small mission organization
called "Ring the Bells-Polish Mission." But God
brought us together for there was one strong
desire in our heartsnot to build another mission

organization, but to build the Church of our Lord

as they prepare for Christian service. Presently,

several of them are studying in various colleges in
the USA and Canada. This program was initiated
by GMRM's Board of Directors in February of 1989
shortly after the death of Benjamin Bajenski. Thus,
over the last seven years we have been able to
assist such international students through the
Benjamin Bajenski Memorial Fund. However, it
solely depends on the contributions from con
cerned individuals. We encourage you, dear
friends, to help us serve these fine future young
Christian leaders. Contributions to this fund (with
memorial designation) may be forwarded to;

My situation is special because I don't study in

secular attitude I find everywhere. That is why the
support of GMRM became so important to me. I
appreciate even more the fact that Vera and
George Bajenski are personal friends of my par

Although I'm in foreign country, Poland is still
present. Although I'm far away from my home

not take place in my life until I was 16. Then, when
it finally happened, it turned my life by a 180
degrees. Since then my main focus has been to be
like Christ and to take with me to heaven as many
people as I can.
God allowed me to come to the USA and to

attend Word of Life Bible Institute in New York, as

While still in America my dream is to attend a

theology. After receiving my Master's degree, I
want to go back to Poland and be used by God in
a full-time ministry. I desire to be an evangelist and
a youth speaker, proclaiming the evidences for
Christianity and why Jesus is the only way to God,
fulfillment and happiness. Tom Otremba, Liberty

I was 13 years oid when I heard that one of my
close cousins, Benjamin Bajenski, had an accident
and passed away. I knew that Ben was a Christian

A few months after Ben's death I was baptized,

professing my faith in the Savior publicly. Also,

PARTNERSHIP IN RADIO

The city of Ostroda in the northeast region of Poland should be known to

the readers of 'The Crier" from our previous mission reports of activities
at the Ostroda Camp Christian, the local church and the Christian
senior citizens' home that are all located in that city. And now, there
is another permanent landmark in the heart of the city of which you
will hear from us from time to time. This is Radio Mazuryl (The
word "Mazury" refers to the geographical region of northeast
ern Poland in which Ostroda is one of the major cities.)
A few years ago we tried to revive a state-owned AM radio

station in the city but it did not last long. Now God offers
this new opportunity for our service.

There are two things that make Radio Mazury unique

special. First, it is the only private radio station
in Poland that is owned by a non-Catholic,

JjMHH

Protestant Christian organization. Mirek and

Ewa B., members of the Pulawska Street
Christian Church in Warsaw are the owners

^^^^^^^and directors of this station. From the

beginning Global Missionary Radio was

Second, the location is of partic-

ular significance. Radio Ma-

heart of the city of Ostroda

God's love among all people. Of course,
our greatest desire is to have listeners

way.

As we had mentioned earlier, this

the city was still called Ostrude, and the

whole region was under German (East
Prussian) administration. Over the last
50 or more years it was rather rundown
and an extremely neglected city land
mark. The roof was in complete ruin but
the tower's foundation and

brick walls will stay for another 100

years.

Now, however, this old water tower

has a new owner and a new designa

months. However, the challenge of
doing restorative work on this tower and
supplying the studio with adequate
technical equipment continues. One
thing Is certain, our involvement in this
project is good and worthy. At this time

the station has a most pressing

immediate need, namely, a mixing

Warsaw, a Swiss product made by

such equipment. This Is a Model 916

GMRM CAMP OPPORTUNITIES IN 1997

Spring and summer are quickly com

ing upon us and we are thinking about
our upcoming camp season. We con
sider this type of ministry very vital to
the churches with which we labour

because we are dealing here with youth

that will become the church leaders of
tomorrow. If we can influence them for

Christ now, they will live for the Lord in

adult life and become responsible
church

members

and

dedicated

Christian workers within the congrega

tions that they attend. This year GMRM
will participate in various ways in

Christian youth camps in Belarus,

Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine.

From May 25 - June 15 Ostroda,

Poland, will become the center for two

groups of Jewish children from Belarus,

and Ukraine, to gather for Christian
camp. Some 150 children are expected
to come. As an outgrowth of our Jewish
outreach ministry in Warsaw, Poland,
Kazik Barchuk has been able to arrange
for children of Jewish parents in Belarus
and Ukraine to come and hear about

Jesus Christ, their Messiah. However,

they will not be able to cover their camp

living expenses, thus we will be respon
sible for their living needs while in

Ostroda.

In the country of Lithuania we have

become aware of a new growing church
in a small city not too far from Vilnius
called Solechniki. This church wishes to
draw children and their families from the

neighborhood and have asked us to

help them run a camp. We agreed to
assist them with finances and with pro
gram ideas and personnel. Thus, we
are committed to see that this camp will
take place.
During the last week of May our
coworkers in the city of Lutsk, Ukraine,
plan to conduct a camp specifically for
the children that live in the city's orphanage. This will be a wonderful opportunity
to effect the lives of these children that

either have no parents or, if they do,

cannot live with them for different rea

sons. For two years in a row GMRM has

provided partial financial support for
their summer youth ministries. We
would like to do the same this year.
Last year for the first time we assist
ed a group of children workers in the

city of Nikolayev in southern Ulcraine.

The funds that GI^/IRM provided allowed

GOD'S FAITHFULNESS IN 25 YEARS OF MINISTRY

"Because of the Lord's great love we are

Our God is a faithful God. He remains
true to His word. I have found this to be true

over the past 25 years of ministry. Just

recently Lucille, my kind wife, organized an
evening celebrating our 25 years of ChristIan ministry. Guests were invited, we remi
nisced together, praised God for his great

that a million people. We sensed the great

need to reach out to this part of the world
with the Gospel of Christ. As we returned to
Canada we felt convinced that God had led

us to our new ministry with others in

Toronto.

For many years thereafter I worked in

close association with Brother Huk and

My first training ground for ministry was

at home. My folks came from Belarus
where they had become believers in Jesus.
During our teenage years we visited Slavic

By 1976 TCM's main office had moved
to Indianapolis, IN, and the Russian radio

office. We formed Global Missionary Radio
Ministries and continued the radio pro

begun preparing our "Good News"
Belarusian radio program that was broad

For about 3 years our Belarusian pro

WHAT AWAITS US THIS SUMMER

eral situation we are facing this summer in
countries of Central and East Europe. Bela

with the traditional Orthodox Church and

other organized church unions. However,

Bible-believing Christians feel some un-

comfortable pressure from authorities as

new restrictions are imposed on churches.
Politically and economically, Belarus has
developed closer ties with Russia, at the
same time, she is becoming increasingly
isolated from other neighbours, especially
Ukraine, Lithuania and Poland. And it is in
these countries that GMRM will continue to

concentrate its ministries throughout this

Keeping the above in mind, GMRM will

be visiting several churches in Belarus this
summer, bringing them encouragement
and Biblical messages of remaining stead
fast in the Lord during these difficult days.
Once again we will be assisting a church in
Kobryn as they conduct a vacation Bible
school and camp program for their youth.
What is new and exciting this summer,
however, is that we are entering into an
extensive mission program in the countiy of

the full-time involvement of Andrew Koryt-

Lithuania. As we mentioned in our previous

issue of 'The Crier," we will be working with

a group of believers in the city of Solechniki

that is located in the southwestern region of
Lithuania. George Bajenski will be there in
late May, then George Repetski in late
June, and in July we bring a bus load of
Polish musicians, evangelist and children's
workers for evangelistic meetings and chil
dren's camp. We pray this evangelistic
effort will encourage and help local believ
ers in establishing a firm foundation for a
new church in this city. This will be the first
non-Catholic, nor Orthodox, but Bible-

believing Christian Church in this city with

kowski, our young coworker. From the mid

dle of May until September there will be a
full schedule of camp activities in Ostrbda.
First, we will have a camp for Jewish chil
dren; an adult camp; a church conference;
a Bible camp for high school-aged young
people with an emphasis on teaching the
English language; junior Bible camp for two
weeks; a youth Bible and basketball camp;
Bible, music and drama camp; youth con
ference and Bible camp for singles.
This is all very exciting and important,
but the Lord is preparing for us something
even more challenging this summer. We
never had something like this
before. Just think, parents of some hundred
Jewish children from far away places in
Belarus, Ukraine and Russia are commit

ting their children to our care for three

weeks of Bible camp in Ostr6da. We will be
eating, resting, playing, singing and teach
ing the Bible stories about their Messiah,
another Jewish boy, Yeshua, the Son of

I cannot help but think right now about a

recent viewing of the film, "Schlndler's List."
Do you remember Mr. Schindler and his
desperate cry when the war was over and
his Jewish friends, prisoners were set free.
When he realized how precious the life of
even one person Is and that It could not be
compared to gold, money or any other per
sonal possession, he cried: "I could have
gotten more people out... If only I had more
money... but I threw away so much money;
if I just... I didn't do enough." Then pointing
to his car, he continued: 'This car... why did

I keep this car? It was worth ten more peo

'This ring... two more people, or at least
one... I could have gotten four more per

spiritual application. We are dealing here

with something much more seriousdeath
or life with Christ Jesus. Yes, it will cost us

something! GMRM's summer ministry this

year in Belarus, Ukraine, Lithuania and
Poland will cost approximately $15,000, not
counting these special Jewish children who
will come from far away to be with us at our
Bible Camp in Poland, it will cost $10 per
child per day. Friends, the amount of chil

We cannot name all the special children who have

touched our hearts, especially in the two youth
camps which we attended. There were boys who

to conduct Christian services in Ukraine, Belarus and

gave us gifts, and orphans who needed plenty of

hugsand we never tired of giving that to them. One
boy from the orphanage, who at times lives with his
grandmother, said excitedly to her: "I've found my

weren't for keeping a diary, we could easily forget

and incidents are etched on our hearts. We'll share
some of these "treasured memories."

Following one concert-preaching service, a lady

with tears of joy related: "My husband who is an
unbeliever came to church for the first time tonight.

His reaction to it all was very positive. Please pray for

him. His name is Anatoli."

While singing in a prison, we could not decipher

through facial expressions if any of the Inmates were
hungrily listening, but afterward they eagerly accept

mother was overjoyed to see the lad so happy. She
promised to attend church regularly with him.
Parents (mostly non-believers) attended a final
program and were impressed favourably. The camps
are a good means for reaching new people for the
Lord. The good-byes on the final day were hard
plenty of tears because our hearts were involved.
It was the same at the Lithuanian youth camp.

Certain ones quickly touched our hearts. There was

little freckle-faced Igor whose expression would
never have made you think that he is an orphan.
Igor's father (now in prison) had murdered his moth

his father's imprisonment. There were some older

we and George Repetski arrived, the service was

already in progress. We don't like to disrupt some
body's preaching as we are escorted to the front. The
program was packed with music groups and preach

We thought: "Why did they rush us here when there
was already an abundance of guest speakers and
singers?" The hour was late when we were intro

Golgotha. "It's not the nails which held you, Jesus, on

The two years were a positive growing experience

As a young man Deema entered the armed ser

of communism, the commander found Deema's New
Testament and said: 'This will be confiscated."

At that moment Deema thought of the verses: "Do

not worry about how or what you should answer or

what you should say." (Luke 12:11,12). Although

Deema had entered the room with fear, now he

spoke with confidence. He asked the officer: "Are you

a communist?"

The officer proudly patted his shirt pocket which

held his communist card and answered: "Of course."

Then Deema asked: "Do you ever leave your card

at home?"

"No, I always carry it next to my heart."

Then Deema pointed to the New Testament: 'This
is my symbol of allegiance. I too carry it next to my
heart."

"Alright, you may have the book back after your

two years of service," stated the officer.

Deema held his ground: "You have the power to

take it from me, but it will affect the way I serve my
country and you."

The officer, now on the defensive, bargained:

"We'll keep the book safe in a guarded room.
Whenever you'd like, you may come and read it
beneath the picture of Lenin."
"I need it with me at all times," Deema insisted

OUR MINISTRY AS AN EVANGELISTIC TEAM
IN UKRAINE, BELARUS AND LITHUANIA

We thank the Lord for the many opportunities that

he gave the singing Rostvit Twins (Janice and Faye)

and me (George Repetski) to minister in three coun

triesUkraine, Belarus and Lithuania. We spent the

first week at a day camp for children of non-believing

families in the city of Lutsk. During the following three
weeks we traveled about Belarus and visited 20 con

gregations. Lithuania proved to be a unique experi

ence as we visited 3 churches and spent a week in
children's camp in a staunchly Catholic area.

Having visited so many churches, many special

moments come to mind. For example, children at the

camps became dear to each one of us. Once you

see them every day, their unique personalities etch

themselves into your memory. It is simply over

whelming to see how eagerly the children come to

hear the Bible stories, sing the songs, play their

hearts out during game period. Praise the Lord,
many made first-time commitments to accept Christ

as their Savior. How they need our prayers keeping

in mind the fact that they do not live in Christian
Bible-believing homes. Pray that the local Christians
will maintain contact with these new believers and

help them develop more fully into becoming true fol

praise the Lord that the camp ended well with no inci

new work and most that come are children of non-

Throughout Belarus I met people who remem

listened quietly as the Rostvits sang and presented
the Gospel using their puppets and slides. Following
the meeting several girls stayed back and sang for us
as the adults fed us before our trip back to our tem
porary home in the city of Mogilev. We've included a

Sunday. This surprised me. Apparently they're re

playing some past radio talks.

Today's presidential regime in Belarus is very dic

tatorial and is putting much pressure on evangelical
churches. We believe this is partly a result of the

Orthodox Church working closely with the govern

ment to curtail evangelistic activities. In spite of new
restrictions, we were invited to sing and preach
before a group of 50 prison inmates, a classroom
filled with young school children and hospital work
ers. This is now officially against the law in Belarus.
Local churches are struggling with such issues.
Please pray for those non-believers that heard the

message of Christ that they will respond to the mes

sage of Christ and begin following him.
As the Rostvits and I traveled to various churches

we went to one village congregation in Belarus that

we found rather interesting. I fully expected to preach

being at this church I had to quickly change my mes

picture of this church with the children standing in

front of it. Indeed, what a joy and privilege to have
served our Lord in congregations such as this one.

George Bajenski continues to conduct his ministry

in Poland throughout the summer and fall months.
During June and July he was heavily involved in the
program of Ostrbda Camp Christian. He has already
visited several cities of Poland with different groups
of Christians from the USA and with Janice and Faye
Rostvit. One significant outreach in which George
participated is during a week of evangelistic meetings
in Lithuania together with a group of musicians and
singers from Misslo Musica of Poland. He arranged
for evangelistic meetings in various cities of
Lithuania. Missio Musica also provided music for our
grand opening of the camp in Lithuania. During
August and September George will continue his min
istry in Poland visiting many churches with groups
from the USA. One significant phase of GMRM's out
reach will be the coming of Joni and Friends, as they
will be speaking in Warsaw and other cities present
ing the Gospel and talking about ministry to the dis
abled in Poland. George will be fully involved in this

effort. His wife, Vera, will be joining George during

the month of September.

Jewish Biblical history. During the first days the name
of Jesus was mentioned just as the Messiah, but as
instruction from the New Testament increased, more

their conversations with our Polish personnel as the
Lord and Saviour. They heard the preaching of the
Gospel within the light of Jewish history and its fulfill

TO JEWISH CHILDREN

Talk about a unique God-given outreach! This one

certainly is. In past issues of "The Crier" we have
been telling you about our outreach to Jewish people
in Poland through the efforts of our good friend and
coworker, Kazik Barczuk. He resides in Warsaw and

began a Christian outreach to people of Jewish

background. As a result of his contacts with Jewish
organizations Kazik arranged to have a group of
Jewish ladies come from Belarus and spend some
time at the Ostr6da Camp Christian last year and

Sabbath which included the drinking of wine and

breaking of bread signifying Christ and his sacrificial
death. This was followed by a time of celebration
which included singing, dancing and playing.
We believe that such a time of teaching will bring
spiritual fruit. We already know that several of the
those that attended Ostr6da Camp last year have
given their lives and hearts to the Lord. Please pray
that others will follow their examples and come to
know Jesus as their Messiah, Savior, Lord and

SUMMER END REFLECTIONS

September and October is a time when

we review our GMM ministries in Europe

and ask the Lord that the good seeds of the

Living Word sown by us during the summer
might bring a multiple harvest. For this is
true joy when we can selflessly give our
best to the Master, knowing that our true
treasures are laid up in heaven (Matt.
6:19-20).
We dream already now of this beautiful
time when we will see Jesus, when we will

hear his resounding voice: "Weil done,

good and faithful servant, come into the
kingdom prepared for you from the founda
tion of the earth" (Matt. 25:34). But we are
also eager to see the rest of the family who
is already therethose who came to know
the Lord as a result of camps organized by
us, evangelistic meetings, radio programs
and other mission activities. It will be worth

it all when we see Jesusmore than any

thing this world can offer us. What a joy it

will be to hear such words of thanks: "It was

through your life, your testimony, your

preaching, singing, sharing, giving and

inviting me that I am here today" (1 Thess.
2:19).
I thank God for allowing us to share the
Gospel this summer at Ostroda with over a
hundred Jewish children and adults from

Belarus, Russia and Poland. Please

remember Frankie and Anthonina in your

prayers who are finding it difficult to forgive

for all that has happened to their loved ones
during the Holocaust. Pray also for Igor, a

uation is difficult. We pray for a group of

eager basketball players and a team of taikwon-doo enthusiasts. They spent 10 days

with us at our camp in Ostroda. We pray for

homeless Valery who worked so hard with
us throughout the summer. Then a group of
believers from Lidzbark needs our prayers.

They actively witness for the Lord In their

city and are now ready to start their first
Christian Church in their city. Also, please
pray for the witness of young professional
Christian musicians of Missio Musica in

Poland with whom we ministered in Poland,

Lithuania and Belarus. We also are praying

for a growing church in Warsaw that had

started in September and continues to
exceed 500 in attendance at their Sunday
worship services. God is so good and faith
ful. We just humbly bow before him and
say: "Thank you. Lord." And we thank you,
friends, for remembering us in your prayers
and your financial contributions.

parental love and care, a child dies. But

His parents did care for Him. He "grew
and became strong: he was filled with wis

(Luke 2:40). We are told by John that "the
Word became flesh and made his dwelling
among us. We have seen his glory, the
glory of the One and Only, who came from
the Father, full of grace and truth" (John
1:14).
Life is worth living for us because
Jesus was born as a baby and, by this, He
became like one of us. Not only did He
reveal God to us, but also became "sin"

for us on Golgotha's cross. This opened

the way for us to have direct access to the
throne room of God. He became our "high
priest" before God the Father on our
behalf. We can now approach God's
throne confidently and present our needs
to Him. But this is not ail. Because Jesus

came the first time, we have the blessed

In 1 Tim. 3:16 the Apostle Paul stated:
"God was manifest in the flesh". God took
on human form and skin. The word that is

applied to Christ is "Emmanuel"God

with us (Matthew 1:23).
We hear this message so often, that it
somehow becomes "old hat"~hardly
noticed. Yet, the profundity of it is beyond
measure or comparison. There is nothing
like it on planet earth. That God, the
Creator or the Universe, life and mankind,

But that is what happened when Jesus
came as a baby, born in the humble town
of Bethlehem.

In

Christ God

became vulnerable.

Jesus was fully dependent on his earthy

hope that He will come again and take us

up to be with Him for ever. Apostle Paul
wrote that we "wait for the blessed hope
the glorious appearing of our great God
and Saviour, Jesus Christ" (Titus 2:13).
Apostle Peter reminds us that "He has

given us new birth into a living hope... into

an inheritance that can never perish, spoil
or fadekept in heaven for you" (1 Peter
1:3-4). Life is meaningful because Jesus
came, helps us in our needs and gives us
hope for the future.
Lucille and I wish to express our deep
est thanks for supporting us of GMM by
your prayers and giving. You have made it
possible for us to share the blessed hope
of Christ's coming with many over the past

greater joy and anticipation that we look
forward to His second coming. This time,
when Jesus, the Lion of Judah and the

King of kings, will come, we want to be

ready to welcome Him, not as the first time
when He was forgotten, despised and
rejected. We know that when He comes
again, He will be fully vindicated. He will
receive glory and honor. Every knee shall
bow before Him, every tongue shall con
fess Him. We want to be there!

In addition, we know that when He

comes all hurt, hatred and injustice will be

done away with. No more separationall

of God's family will be reunited. Can you

imagine such a Christian celebration?

Friends, this is exactly what Vera's

we will be remembering Jesus' birth, let
