By NEIL SPERRY

Dear Neil: I have weeds

that grow between my wood

fence and a chain link fence.

They have some kind of little

pixie fl owers on them. I get

rid of the plants, but they keep

coming back. What could I

use that would be better?

It sounds like they are

broadleafed weeds (that’s

the category of weeds that

are not grasses). You could

use a broadleafed weedkiller

containing 2,4-d. It will be a

spray that you would care-

fully apply with a pump

sprayer. Put it on through

the chain link fence, and ap-

ply it specifi cally to the foli-

age of the weeds. It needs

to be warm (approaching

70 degrees F), and it should

not rain for 48 hours af-

ter you spray. It will take a

week or two, but it will kill

the weeds. If you can break

the cycle early enough in the

season that this year’s weeds

can’t go to seed, you should

be able to eliminate them.

For the record, once you use

a sprayer for any type of

weedkiller, you should never

use it to apply insecticides or

fungicides. It’s too diffi cult to

rinse out the residues. Mark

it specifi cally for weedkiller

use.

Dear Neil: Why is my live

oak losing its leaves so early?

Normally that doesn’t hap-

pen until late winter.

Of course, it could be due

to something exotic, but far

and away the most common

cause this year has been left-

over effects of all the rains in

late spring and early sum-

mer. We had widespread im-

pact from fungal leaf diseas-

es. Hollies, oaks and many

of our other stalwart plants

suffered. Things should be

fi ne come spring.

Dear Neil: You mentioned

peonies in a recent column.

I have noticed, while visit-

ing relatives at the time they

were blooming, that they are

fragrant in Iowa and not in

Washington. Is that unusu-

al?

It probably has a lot more

to do with the varieties that

were being grown or where

in their fl owering cycle they

were when you saw them.

Fragrance of almost any

group of fl owers will vary

from variety to variety. Ros-

es are the classic example.

You can smell some varieties

as soon as you enter the gar-

den. Others require much

closer olfactory inspection.

Also, fragrant fl owers will

have their best aromas early

in the lives of the individu-

al fl owers and early in the

morning as well.

Dear Neil: We are trying

to eliminate a row of old-

fashioned nandinas that

are growing too close to our

house. We tried pulling them

up, and we have applied

Round-Up, diesel oil and 2,

4-d. Nothing has killed them

out completely, and they’re so

thick we can’t get a rototiller

into them. What can we do?

Pretty good testimonial

as to why nandinas are so

popular where we do want

them. The best method is

one that you mentioned,

and that would be the same

broadleafed weedkiller 2, 4-

d that we mentioned earlier,

applied as a foliar spray to

active new growth in mid-

spring. Wait until May, then

spray at the recommended

rate. You’ll still have those

massive roots to contend

with, but at least you’ll have

killed the top growth. You

might try a really heavy-

duty rototiller. Beware of

any utility lines that might

run into your house through

their bed.

Dear Neil: I have a large

oak tree that is close to my

drive. One of the tree’s roots

has lifted the drive by about

5 inches. Can I safely remove

that root in order to replace

that elevated portion of my

drive?

Absolutely. The tree will

recover, assuming it suffers

at all. While you have the

driveway torn up you might

check for any other smaller

roots that may be waiting

their turn to do your drive

harm. Cut a trench along the

side of the drive and install

some type of root barrier to

keep additional roots from

causing a problem. You could

also install interlocking con-

crete pavers that would al-

low you easier access to the

soil without breaking solid

pieces of concrete.

Dear Neil: I have new

blackberry plants that have

grown very well. They were

planted last winter. Should

they be pruned now?

Oh, no! Blackberries pro-

duce fruit on canes that were

produced the preceding year.

Once they bear fruit, how-

ever, those canes will never

bear again. That makes

early June the best time to

cut the canes that have just

borne fruit back completely

to the ground. “Tip-prune”

the new canes this spring to

Important Talk

Discussing fi nancial, legal

and long-term care decisions

with older parents can be dif-

fi cult and awkward, especially

if you’ve never done it before.

Many seniors consider fi nan-

have no interest in discussing

them, even with their kids.

To help with this the MetLife

talks with parents a little eas-

ier, starting with:

1. Don’t put it off: It’s best

to initiate the conversation

while your parents are still in

good health.

2. Team up: Involve your

siblings and other fam-

ily members in the discus-

sion with your parents. This

can help you head off possible

hard feelings. Plus, with fam-

ily members involved, your

folks will know everyone is

concerned, not just you.

3. Explain your intentions:

Let your parents know that

you are starting this discus-

sion because you’re concerned

and you want to make sure

you do the right things as they

age.

4. Don’t take over: Your par-

ents still have the need and

right to make their own de-

cisions. Try not to take that

sense of control away from

them.

5. Agree to disagree: You

and your parents may dis-

agree with each other on what

they may need, but don’t force

your opinion on them. Unless

their health or safety is on the

line, respect their decisions.

6. Communicate clearly:

Try to avoid offering advice.

Instead, focus on presenting

them with options. Include

them in the discussion by ask-

ing for their ideas. Instead of

telling them what to do, try to

express your concerns.

7. Ask about important

documents: Know where your

parents’ insurance policies,

LACTOSE INTOLERANCE

When a child is lactose intolerant, he or she will usually end up with stomach cramps, gas, and diarrhea within 30 minutes of eating a milk product. In lactose intolerant people, the body does not adequately di- gest the main sugar (lactose) in milk and milk products. It can be man- aged with diet modifi cations and/or some food supplements. If you sus- pect your child is lactose intolerant, schedule an appointment with your pediatrician. He or she can run a simple breath test, as well as rule out any other health conditions that could be causing the problems. If your child is lactose intolerant, make sure he or she gets enough calcium from other non-dairy sources.

Lactose Intolerance is of special concern to many parents. Speak with an experienced doctor at LOVETTE PEDIATRICS. Our offi ce has helped many children over the years and you can count on us to provide careful assessment of your situation. Please call (940) 627-8044 for an appointment. Our offi ce is located at 2014 Ben Merritt Drive, Suite B, Decatur. For your convenience, we’re open M -Th 8am to 5pm and F 8am to noon. Healthy Futures Start Here. We welcome walk-ins and will take great care of your child.

“First Days,” a newborn/prenatal class, is now offered at Wise Regional Health System. Class held every third Thursday of each month. Call 940-626-1229 to register.

An 8-ounce glass of milk contains 300 milligrams of calcium. It is recommended that children between the ages of 9 and 18 get 1,300 milligrams of calcium per day.

NEW INSIGHT INTO WOMEN’S
HEART ATTACKS
The fi rst thing women should remind themselves about heart disease is that
it is the leading cause of death in women. Just as importantly, women should
heed the landmark Women’s Ischemia Syndrome Evaluation (WISE), which
suggests that many women have a form of heart disease called “coronary
microvascular dysfunction.” This fi nding helps explain why heart disease
in women is not detected by standard diagnostic procedures and, thus,
goes unrecognized and untreated. While standard protocol identifi es only
coronary-artery obstruction, many women suffer from improper dilation of
smaller blood vessels that feed the heart muscle but cannot accommodate
increased blood fl ow. This is one reason why so few women have the classic
crushing chest pain that signals coronary artery disease.
At WISE OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY P.A., we are there for
you when it’s time to make those important healthcare decisions. Whether
its routine pap tests and mammograms or questions about heart disease, our
caring staff is here to help. For further information, call 940-626-8008. Our
offi ce is conveniently located at 1713 South Fm 51, Ste. 201, Decatur.
New patients are welcome.
Wishing everyone a healthy and
prosperous New Year.
Women are nine times more likely to succumb to heart disease
