The 10th annual Wise
County Christmas Bird
Count was on a cold, windy
day this year. That didn’t
stop us from seeing lots of
good birds! Unfortunately,
it was more quality than
quantity. Although we saw
several rare species, all
groups noted low numbers
of all birds, from cardinals
to sparrows to ducks.
My group included Kathy
Saucier, Charles Randklev,
Ben Lundeen and my mom.
The bird count is based on a
15-mile diameter circle. We
drove the roads and hiked
on the LBJ National Grass-
lands in the northeastern
section of the count area. The
morning started well with
small flocks of sparrows and
cardinals along the roadside
near Greenwood.
While driving down Farm
Road 730, I thought I saw a
woodpecker on a dead tree
by the road. We safely pulled
off and looked back. It was

round residents in our area,
but they have been less com-
mon and are listed on the
Audubon Society WatchList
as a declining and vulner-
able species (http://web1.
audubon.org/science/spe-
cies/watchlist/). The imma-
ture is mostly brown, with
white wing patches (like the
adult’s white wing patches).
This individual had some
red feathers starting to
show on its head.
On top of a hill, also along
the highway, another bird
caught our collective eyes.
This time it was a small
hawk. After scrutinizing it
for a moment, we learned
that it was a Merlin. This
small gray falcon is a rare
winter visitor here. Usually
we only see a few each win-
ter. It was formerly called the
“pigeon hawk”, much in the
same way that the American
Kestrel is colloquially called
“sparrow hawk”.
On Decatur Road near
Unit 71 of the LBJ National
Grasslands, we encountered
a big flock of American Rob-
ins, Cedar Waxwings and
Eastern Bluebirds. They
were feeding on the blue-
berries of cedar trees. While
admiring and attempting to
estimate the many berry-
eating birds, I was shocked
to see a rosy-pink bird: a
male Purple Finch! I hadn’t
seen one of them since the
winter of 2004-05. These
lovely finches are irregular
winter visitors in our area.
We got out of the car on
Unit 71 to hike down into
the woods. It was cold and
windy, and we did not find
much for our efforts. We
had hoped to see kinglets
or creepers in the tall trees
along a ravine, but it was so
windy that even if they were
present, we could not have

plications for the Citizen Forester 2008
training class.
The Citizen Forester program presents
an opportunity for individuals to become
skilled at planting, pruning and main-
