Long’s entry, “Holding On,” is

Cities set state tax rebate records

Every city in Wise County
except three set a record in
2007 for sales tax rebates.
Bridgeport lead the way
with more than $3.6 mil-
lion in rebates, surpassing
the city’s previous record of
almost $2.8 million, set in
2006. Bridgeport’s rebates
have more than tripled in
just five years.
Decatur earned a record
$3.5 million, an increase
over the city’s previous re-
cord of almost $3.2 million
in 2006. Decatur has been on
a gradual, steady increase
since the city started collect-
ing sales tax in 1984. The
city hit the $1 million mark
10 years later, in 1994.
The city of New Fair-
view adopted a sales tax in
mid-1998. That year, the
city earned $365 in sales
tax rebates from the state.
The following year, the city
qualified for more than
$5,000. Five years ago, the
city had $14,708 in rebates.
That number jumped to
$165,840 in 2005, increas-
ing to $178,642 in 2006 and
$371,392 last year.
The city of Chico had
$118,900 in rebates just five
years ago. Last year, the
city’s share of the tax was
$463,018. Growth has been
steady in the cities of Au-
rora and Boyd. In Paradise,
which received $82,090 last
year, the growth has been
gradual the past three years.
In 2004, Paradise earned
$65,960 and then fell slightly
in 2005 to $57,791. Newark
also experienced a slight de-
cline in 2005, when the city
earned $51,600, compared
to $54,927 the year before.
The $65,256 rebated to the
city last year was a record.
Sales taxes were down in
the cities of Lake Bridge-
port, Runaway Bay and Al-
vord last year. Lake Bridge-
port earned $26,090, down
from the $30,690 received
in 2006. The largest rebate
received by the city was
$31,122, in 2001. Runaway
Bay’s top rebate came in
1999, when the city earned
$83,972. In 2007, Run-
away Bay received $61,074,
down from the 2006 total of
$64,872.

sales tax in 1984. The only

Wolf vying for pro rodeo career

Andrea Wolf was three-
years-old when she rode her
first horse. She didn’t ride
far that day, just as far as her
mom’s pocket change would
take her. Whether that me-
chanical horse in front of
Wal-Mart inspired her to a
lifelong love of horses is un-
known, but even now at 31,
Andrea still centers her life
around horses.
She is a member of the
Professional Women’s Barrel
Racing Association and her
goal for 2008 is to qualify for
the Texas Circuit Finals and
the Heartland Tour Finals.
“The goal of most competi-
tors is to make the National
Finals Rodeo but my goal is
to make the Texas Circuit
Finals,” she said. “I’ll go to
as many rodeos as I can.
Eighty is the limit and most
of the finalists make 50 to
60.”
The circuit finals is a more
realistic goal for Wolf, who
has a family and a fulltime
job.
“My husband, Steve, is
real supportive of me and
what I’m doing,” she said. “I
also have an understanding
boss.”
A graduate of Austin
Community College, Wolf is
a physical therapy assistant
at Wise Regional Health
System in Decatur. She
works in aquatic and outpa-
tient therapy and also does
home health. She and Steve
live in Decatur.
Wolf learned to ride from
her mother, Janet Rowe,
who now lives in Kentucky.
“I took dressage and jump-
ing lessons and as I got older,
I wanted to do speed events,”
said Wolf. “I was on the Bow-
ie High School rodeo team
and made the North Texas
High School Rodeo Associa-
tion finals in 1993 and ‘94. I
also made the state finals in
cutting one year.”
Last May, Wolf bought her
Professional Women’s Bar-
rel Racing Association per-
mit. In July, she headed for
Kansas and won more than
half the amount needed to
fulfill the permit and com-
pleted permit qualifications
by winning the Mesquite
Championship Rodeo later
that summer. The 2007 pro
rodeo season ended Sept.
30, with the exception of the
Texas Stampede in Dallas.
“I was blessed with a good
start for the 2008 season
by placing at Marble Falls,
Pasadena, Bellville and Se-
quin,” she said. Those fin-
ishes put her 13th in the
overall standings.
The new year started in
Odessa, followed by Denver
and Fort Worth.
Wolf calls her horse, Sun-
day, “amazing.”
“She was a futurity horse
and several years ago, she
suffered a hoof injury and I
was told that I would never
ride her again,” Wolf contin-
ued.
Wolf stayed off her for two
years but was back com-
peting on her again after a

“Now we are competing at
the pro level and winning
money to boot,” said Wolf.
“This just shows you what
a little hard work and lots
of prayers can do. I thank
God every time I climb on

healed.
“She tries to do everything

easy to train.”

tice lately. We will get better at our offense
and making layups. They were able to extend
the offensive leader for the Greyhounds with
a team-high 14 points. Nathan Garrett added
nine points and T.J. Epting added seven more.
Zane Perkins finished with six points, while
Tommy Repogle had five, Omar Gomez and
Michael Fuller had four each and Blake James

It’s inevitable! Almost all
men develop some prostate
enlargement if they live
long enough. In fact, pros-
tate gland enlargement is so
common it affects about half
of all men over age 50, and
90 percent of men in their
70s and 80s. But the good
news is an increasing num-
ber of medications and sur-
gical options are now avail-
able, making it easier than
ever to treat it. Here’s what
you should know.
Enlarged Prostate
The medical term for an
enlarged prostate is be-
nign prostatic hyperplasia
or BPH - a natural occur-
rence in middle-aged and
older men. What happens
is, as the prostate enlarges,
it can squeeze down on the
urethra (the tube through
which urine passes out of
the body) and cause urinary
problems. Do you have BPH?
Common symptoms include:
the frequent need to urinate
(especially at night); sudden
urge to urinate; a weak or
slow urine stream; difficulty
starting urination; stopping
and starting again while uri-
nating; dribbling after uri-
nating; straining to urinate;

toms of BPH and prostate
cancer are the same, most
men with BPH don’t develop
prostate cancer, and BPH
does not increase the chance

land Journal of Medicine,
found that saw palmetto did
no better than a placebo pill
in relieving symptoms. The
herbal supplement Pygeum,
however, has shown promis-
ing results.

This winter, the NICE!
(Natives Instead of Com-
mon Exotics!) program is
highlighting Possumhaw
holly, Ilex decidua.
It is a small tree that
grows 15-25 feet tall that
can reach 15 feet in diam-
eter. Possumhaw is native
to the eastern U.S. from
Florida to Maryland, west
to Texas and Mexico. Unlike
many hollies, Possumhaw
is deciduous – when leaves
drop in the fall, the female
trees are revealed to be cov-
ered with berries, which can
range from yellow to orange
to bright red.
Plant Possumhaw in full
sun to shade. This plant will
tolerate all North Texas soil
types, but the soil must be
well-drained or only mar-
ginally moist. Trees should
be spaced 10 feet apart and
should be watered when
planted. During the first
growing season, Possumhaw
should be watered every
two-to-three weeks. Once
established, this species is
extremely drought tolerant.
There are a number of
named Possumhaw culti-
vars including Warren’s
Red, Council Fire and Byer’s
Golden – these do not breed
