The Rant
Jake Kleinschmidt/Managing Editor

I
hate Curling
I think instead of Curling
it could be called “the game
British people play when they cannot
play shuffle board on their yachts in
the winter.”
Honestly, who would invent such
a game, and I say game because I am
not about to start calling it a sport.
Well, apparently like any other
strange thing, it comes from Europe,
namely, Scotland. And like all things
ridiculous, the British have stolen it
and claimed it as their own. Pushing
rocks on ice started as early 1551, and
the earliest rock pushing club was
established in 1716 in Scotland, and
America was able to avoid pushing
rocks on ice until 1830, when the
first American rock pusher club was
created here.
One could also call it marbles on
ice, because the objective apparently
is to get your rocks closest to the
center, and knock the other team’s
rocks out of the ring. So take marbles,
pool, sweeping, and hockey, and you
get something called pushing rocks
on ice.
Believe me, this sport is intense.
After watching a few matches of
it, and watching people scream
and yell, and jump up and down, it
makes me believe that getting into
an argument with a woman that does
nothing but push rocks all day would
be a dangerous choice. The physical
condition of the competitor seems
to make little to no difference in the
outcome. Old, young, very big, and
very small all seem to be able to push
the rocks and sweep with the brooms.
I tried to get interested, to watch
the sport and see why it would be so
fun, but no matter what I tried to do,
nothing could keep me interested. It’s
finally a game that is less entertaining
than baseball, and ties with golf.
To make the sport more
entertaining, I offer the following
suggestions.
•Replace the rock with a piece of
seal meat, fresh.
•Add a polar bear, unchained at
the starting point
•Survive while you are placed
between the meat and the polar bear.
This would be much more
entertaining than watching what they
do now. Then, the screaming and
yelling would all be justified and
one would be able to actually call it
a sport.
The most common argument in
favor of the sport is “You just don’t
understand how the game is meant to
be played.”
I know how the game is played.
Just like I said above, it’s pushing
rocks down a “sheet” of ice where
you try to knock the other stones
out of the “hog line” so that yours
are closest to the center and not out
of bounds. The point of sweeping is
to get rid of the “pebble” so that it
runs smoother. And whoever has the
hammer, or last stone has a massive
advantage. I get it. It is still just an
awfully boring game that should be
played with land mines instead of
granite stones with plastic underneath
them.
Curling, I hate you for your
boring game. Curling, you’re not a
sport. Curling, why are you in the
Olympics? Seriously, how did you
pull that one off? Good job.
