Race toward park

may cause logjam
With Triple Crown hero American Pharoah racing
at the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park Sunday,
officials are bracing for a potential traffic nightmare.
Lt. Mike Kelly, traffic safety coordinator of the
Oceanport Police Department, said the force is preparing for the largest crowd in Monmouth Park history, in
the neighborhood of 60,000 spectators, almost double
the attendance of 35,093 for last years race.
All of those people will have to get in and out on secondary roads near the racetrack, which is expected to
create a logjam on the roads.
People are going to have to be patient, Kelly said,
Its not like theyre just going to be able to jump on the
roadways and go where theyre going.
Still, Kelly said authorities are very well prepared to handle the crowds.

billion, and Senate President Stephen Sweeney has a

new plan for paying it: a low-interest loan from Washington.
Sweeney, D-Gloucester, says the federal government should help states fix their pension shortfalls,
which are approaching $1 trillion nationally, by creating a pension debt restructuring program.
Voters in a state would have to approve participating
in the plan, and states would have to agree to make required payments into their retirement systems to ensure they wont rack up the same debts again. Loans
would be repaid over 30 years. They should have an interest rate of 1 percent to 2 percent, Sweeney suggested.

Maybe it was after the Belmont

it was in the late 1990s, when Monmouth Park officials began building a relationship with trainer Bob
Baffert.
Better yet, look back three decades ago, when
they lured Spend A Buck to the Haskell Invitational
and turned it into an event, before Bet Twice, Alysheba and Lost Code turned the race into a midsum-
