July 23, 2015 marked the last day of the

week-long celebration of the National
Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation
Week at the SPED Center of Dona Juana
Elementary School.
A short program was held after which the
SPED pupils and their parents lined up
for their turns at the photo booth which
was sponsored by RC Holy Spirit. The
SPED teachers, called Voltes V by

school principal Mr Alarico L Ramos for

their energy and commitment, set up a
mini salon and patiently made up each
SPED pupil. The children and their parents enjoyed donning funny hats and accessories and gamely posed.
Present during the culminating activity of
the SPED Center were WC President
Angel Castro, PP Marcia Salvador, Chair
Ric Salvador and Rtn Jerry Sy.

Disaster awareness and preparedness forums held in two more villages for the protection of residents in case of earthquake and fire
In collaboration with the Quezon City Red Cross, RC
Holy Spirit coordinated the holding of Disaster Preparedness Seminars in Don Enrique Heights and BF Homes
QC on July 25 and 26, respectively.
Mr Lloyd L Sapla, Head of QC Red Cross Disaster Management Unit as well as its Emergency Response Unit,
conducted the seminars. He presented a study of the
geological hazards faced by the country, being in the Pacific Rim of Fire and at the Earthquake Belt. He also
showed the findings of the Metro Manila Earthquake Impact Reduction Survey on the possibility of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake and its grim effects. He then discussed
lengthily practical preparations and actions to take before, during and after an earthquake. Drills were held to

practice the attendees on what to do during an earthquake, using the DUCK, COVER and HOLD actions.
Thirty-seven (37) homeowners attended the forum in Don
Enrique Heights, while 73 were present during the seminar at BF Homes QC. The seminars were coordinated
by IPP Marites Nepomuceno with the Quezon City Red
Cross and the homeowners associations of the villages.
A similar seminar is being arranged for the Isidora Hills
homeowners association.
Two weeks ago, a similar disaster preparedness forum
presented by the Red Cross was organized by Holy Spirit
for the Don Antonio Heights Homeowners Association.

Interactors of Holy Spirit National High School launch series of

disaster preparedness briefings for elementary school pupils
While grown-up staff of Red Cross and RC Holy
Spirit Rotarians hold Disaster Preparedness forums
with subdivision officers and homeowners, officers
& members of the INTERACT CLUB OF HOLY
SPIRIT NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL began a series
of Disaster Preparedness briefings for younger
grade school pupils last 23 July 2015 in neighbouring Dona Juana Elementary School.
During the SPED program on July 23, 2015, officers of
the Interact Club of Holy Spirit National High School
came to help cheer up the SPED children and also to
conduct a short orientation on Earthquake Disaster Preparedness. They spoke before the SPED pupils, parents and teachers on what to do before, during and after

an earthquake, based on guidelines and tips from the

PHIVOLCS and the Red Cross.
After demonstrating the DUCK, COVER and HOLD actions, and with the guidance of PP Marcia Salvador and
the schools coordinator for Disaster Risk Reduction and
Management, Mr Arsenio Agluba, the Interactors led the
SPED pupils and teachers in an earthquake drill.
Upon Mr Aglubas request, the Interactors led by President Jannelle Larbio visited two (2) classrooms of Grade
VI students and did the same disaster preparedness
talk, demo and drill. They could have gone to more
classrooms, but it was time for them to go back to their
own classes. A schedule would be arranged to cover
more elementary school pupils.

The latest Oriental medical relief mission last Sunday, July 19,
2015 served 40 patients living in the Payatas dumpsite areas.
Of the 40 patients served, two patients were administered acupuncture treatment.
Rtr Aileen Mesias of RaC Holy Spirit assisted Dr Bong and the
patients.
While most of the patients served by the missions complained of muscle pains and ailments like common colds, fever, coughing, and itchiness, a few were extraordinary cases.
For example, Aling Rose, a 52-year old cigarette vendor, continues
miraculous recovery from the effects of stroke that she had suffered
last October 2013. She has been improving after being served by Oriental medical care of Rotary since April 2014.
The 2 to 3 hour sessions of Oriental medical care missions are performed by PP Dr. Eui Bong Jung of RC Holy Spirit and Korean youth
volunteers of the Sion Oriental Medical Mission. When necessary,
other Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors assist during missions.
A mission typically involves free consultation, free herbal medicines
and vitamin supplements. Free acupuncture is administered by Dr
Bong based on patients condition.
Korea-based partners in these missions are Korea INs Pharm Inc. and
Seoul Apgujeong Church. Now on its 5th year, this continuing program
constitutes part of community service and international cooperation &
understanding initiatives of RC Holy Spirit.

WHAT IS ORIENTAL MEDICINE?

Korean medicine (Hangul: , Hanja: ) refers to the traditional medical care that originated
in ancient Imperial China and was further developed and practiced in Korea. Traditional Chinese
medicine includes forms of herbal medicine, acupuncture, massage (Tui na), exercise (qigong), and
dietary therapy. It is primarily used as a complementary alternative medicine approach.

MESSAGE

Earthquake Forum...
We are all aware or have heard of a possible BIG ONE that could hit our country during our
lifetime. Are we aware, that we are just a few kilometers away from an earthquake fault ?
Our club, the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit is privileged to partner with the Philippine National Red
Cross in reaching out to communities to help spread awareness and understanding of this
threat.
It is good for us to know the basic answers to the WHAT? WHY? HOW? WHERE? To know
and understand is the start of a meaningful ACTION. To Plan, Prepare. The answer as to the
WHEN? Is by our God. And so , we pray.
We continue to coordinate with the different homeowners associations within Brgy. Holy Spirit.
Next in our schedule is with Isidora Hills. We shall also gather the leaders and coordinators of
the different marginalized groups from different areas within the barangay for another forum
and practical tips on how to handle themselves and be able to help others. They will then cascade what they learn to their members and neighbors.
To the board of trustees and members of Don Antonio Heights, Don Enrique Heights and BF
Homes, thank you for giving us the opportunity to be of service thru the forum.
Life is a gift from God, what we do with it is our offering to Him... May we all allow Him to guide
us.

Rotary News - NO WILD POLIO CASE IN NIGERIA FOR ONE YEAR

Where in the world is NIGERIA ?

Population - about 175 million.
Has the 7th largest population in the world.
LAGOS is the biggest city with a population of
15 million.
Today, 24 July 2015, marks one year since Nigeria last reported a polio case caused by wild poliovirus, putting the
country on the brink of eradicating the paralyzing disease.
The last case was reported on 24 July 2014 in the northern
state of Kano. If no cases are reported in the coming weeks,
the World Health Organization is expected to remove Nigeria from the list of countries where polio is endemic, leaving
just two: Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Nigeria is the last polio-endemic country in Africa. The continent is poised to reach its own first full year without any illness from the virus on 11 August.
Every Rotarian in the world should be proud of this
achievement, says Rotary International President K.R. Ravindran. We made history. We have set Africa on course for
a polio-free future. But we have not yet reached our goal of
a polio-free world. Raising funds and awareness and advocating with your government are more crucial than ever.
Progress in Nigeria has come from many measures, including strong domestic and international financing, the commitment of thousands of health workers, and new strategies
that reached children who had not been immunized earlier
because of a lack of security in the northern states.
Rotarys commitment has been the number one reason for
the recent success in Nigeria, says Dr. Tunji Funsho, chair
of Rotarys Nigeria PolioPlus Committee. We have infected
political leaders with this commitment. The government has
demonstrated this with political support and financial and
human resources. And
that went down the line
from the federal level, to
the state, to the local
governments.
Nigeria has increased
its domestic funding for
polio eradication almost
every year since 2012
and has allocated $80

million for the effort this year.

Funsho also applauds religious leaders who championed
the vaccination efforts to families in their communities.
Despite the historic gains in Nigeria, health experts are cautious about declaring victory. Funsho says the Global Polio
Eradication Initative partners must strengthen routine immunization especially in hard-to-reach areas, in addition to
boosting sensitive surveillance to prevent resurgence of the
disease. If no new cases are reported in the next two years,
Nigeria, along with the entire Africa region, will be certified
polio-free.
The virus can be introduced from anywhere where it is still
endemic, particularly now in Afghanistan and Pakistan, into
areas that havent had polio in years, Funsho says. It is
important we keep the immunity level in Nigeria to at least
90 percent.
For instance, Syria experienced a sudden outbreak of the
disease when 35 cases were reported in December 2013.
None had been reported there since 1999. Immunizations
become imperative for history not to repeat itself in Nigeria,
says Funsho.
In June, Rotary announced $19 million in grants for continued polio eradication activities in Africa, including almost
$10 million for Nigeria. Since 1985, when Rotary launched
PolioPlus, the program that supports the organizations polio
eradication efforts, its worldwide monetary contributions to
the cause have exceeded $1.4 billion.
Weve come a long way and have never been so close to
eradicating polio in Nigeria and around the world, but its not
a time to fully celebrate, says Funsho. We have some grueling years ahead of us before WHO can certify Nigeria and
Africa polio-free.

Principles that Guide Rotary

The Object of Rotary

The Four-Way Test

First formulated in 1910, the Object of Rotary is to encourage and

foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

Of the things we think, say or do

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the
recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;
FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill,
and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional
persons united in the ideal of service.

Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER
FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

ROTARIANS PLEDGE
I am a Rotarian
I will always uphold the TRUTH.
I am a Rotarian
I will always strive to be FAIR
in all of my dealings with my fellowmen.

5 Avenues of Service
Based on Object of Rotary, the Five Avenues of Service are Rotarys philosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based:

Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the

effective functioning of the club.
Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their
vocations and to practice high ethical standards.

I am a Rotarian
I will always endeavor to build
GOODWILL and UNDERSTANDING
in my community,
among my countrymen
and people of all nations.

International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotarys

humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding & peace.

I am a Rotarian
I will always seek to promote
the greatest good
for the greatest number of people
in the spirit of ROTARY SERVICE.

Youth Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth

and young adults through leadership development activities, service
projects, and exchange programs.

I am a Rotarian
I will always uphold
the Rotary International Motto,

Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community.

SERVICE ABOVE SELF.

Rotary Code of Conduct

As a Rotarian, I will
1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviors and activities
2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary
3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others
4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings
5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society
6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community
7. Honor the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavor or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians
8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship
