Big Ideas:
Language study facilitates recognition of linguistic patterns which, in turn, supports the process of language acquisition. One
can gain new insights about self and others by comparing and contrasting target languages and cultures.
Unit Goals and Objectives:

Students will be able to engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange
opinions about food. More specifically, students will be able to: speak about foods they like and dislike, read menus and order
food, and compare what they typically eat to what is typically eaten in France.

Unit Summary:
This unit will focus on food in general, food preferences and introduce helpful vocabulary to use in restaurants. Students will
learn French vocabulary for foods that they eat here in the United States, as well as typical foods in French speaking countries.
They will be able to express which foods they like and dislike, what they eat in typical meals and what people in France eat. In
addition, they will learn to read restaurant menus, and share menus that they create themselves. They will also create a
shopping list and plan where to get the necessary ingredients.

Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level:
The class will discuss food preferences
and be introduced to the verbs to eat and

Lesson Activities:
Review student menus and compare to restaurant menus
found online
Pair students, one is a waiter, or counter worker and the
other student orders food.
The main activity of this lesson is to create a Graphic
Organizer that showcases four simple meals that you will
shop for and prepare for the guests at your home in
Grenoble, France.
