This is a 185 bed private hospital which gives services to private and insurance

patients as well as those that attend the hospital coming from Spanish NHS, with
which exists an agreement and which represents 50% of assistance.

This is a Hospital that focuses on surgical procedures and acute patients as well
as traffic related, work accident related units and also sports federation and
professional football team care.
The health center covers practically all medical and surgical specialties, and at the
present time the hospital has attained a paper-less environment -Extranet SAP
Enterprise Portal-.
The Radiology Department is a young and forward-looking department covering
all the major subspecialties in a busy GH setting.
The Department has a 1.5T Phillips Gyroscan Intera MRI Scanner, installed in
January 2002. A helical CT Toshiba scanner, two fluoroscope rooms-one fully
digital- , two state-of-the-art ultrasound machines(Phillips-Envisor- and ATL HDI
5500) , a high resolution Senographe and orthopantomographe .A new 64-slice
CT and a Bone mineral densitometry Hologic(installation under way).
We form a team of 4 radiologists working with HP work-stations under HIS-PACS
and RIS environment -GE Medical Systems-Centricity Radiology RA 600 and
Kodak PACS Link System-.
Description of Duties and Details of Skills
Those pertaining to a general Radiologist with wide experience in all related areas
with core skills in ultrasound, MRI, CT and fluoroscopy, and with special interest in
musculo-skeletal MRI and all type of US examinations.
I have 10 clinical sessions per week and home-based on-call duties are 1 out of 3
weeks.
80% are outpatients, and 20% inpatients.
Workload: typically every day I report 18-20 MRIs: 60% musculo-skeletal , 25%
neurological system and 15 % others: liver, pancreas, vascular,
gynaecological, paediatric.....
10 CTs: cranial, neck, chest, abdominal....
3-5 Bone mineral densitometries.
10-15 mammographies -50% screening and 50% symptomatic- with US-FNAB
if needed.
10-15 US examinations: 2 Doppler -cerebrovascular or peripheral- ,
50% abdominal , 1-2 transrectal with or without prostate biopsy, musculoskeletal , thyroid , testicle ,paediatric-hip ....
Eventually barium colorectal and upper G.I. studies (3-5 per week),
IVPs (1-3 per week) , prostate transrectal biopsies (1-3 per week),
hysterosalpingographies (1-2 per week) and occasionally MCU-micturating cystouretherogram- (1-2 per month).
In addition to breast FNAB , other FNABs (liver , thyroid.) in variable number ,
over 5 every week , with X-Ray guided , CT-guided or stereotactic technique.
When necessary, drain placements and nephrostomies, as well as sialographies
and galactographies.

I have developed a keen interest in all MRI imaging and Sports Injury Imaging
(MRI and US).
I carry out evaluation radiology -labour and traffic accidents- : 5% of workload.
Weekly, I have multi-disciplinary meetings with oncologists, neurologists,
surgeons -general, urologic, neurology, orthopaedic- , internal medicine
specialists and pathologists. As well, when necessary, I have meetings with
accident and emergency departments and the intensive care unit .I cover the
high-dependency unit when they need it.
About a 5% of time is dedicated to urgent cases and 0.5% with acutely ill
patients.
In general my work, and especially my current work, is like the English concept of
Consultants: autonomous and without supervision.
