Dear Reader,
The following are taken from a recent Watch SA bulletin:

1 - At the recent Police and Community Engagement

Forum held in Willunga, police became aware of community
concern regarding the prevalence of un roadworthy vehicles
within the South Coast Local Service Area. This concern led
local police to conduct a traffic safety campaign aimed at
vehicles which pose a danger to road users including those
driving or travelling in those vehicles themselves. As we
enter the winter months this campaign has concentrated on
vehicle lighting and tyres. As part of Operation Reckless,
South Coast Police have, since 1 May, 2015 issued defect
notices on 179 vehicles. The owners of these vehicles now
face the task of not only undertaking repairs but also having
the defect cleared so that the vehicle can be driven on roads
again. It would have been far simpler (and less expensive) if
those owners had simply maintained their vehicles to the
appropriate standard.
The number of vehicles found to have defects is alarming and
serves as a wake-up call for local motorists to ensure that
their vehicles are fit for the road and especially so as we
enter the winter months. The support of the local community
is also acknowledged in bringing to police attention this
concern.
2 - The intersection of Main South and Aldinga Road was
assessed during the drafting of the Main South Road - Road
Management Plan. The plan identified two options to
improve this intersection, one being a roundabout and the
other (more short term option) is the installation of a
'seagull' treatment, installing a raised island at the Junction
to provide additional channelisation for the right turn

Aldinga Bay Art Community Group
is proud to be holding an art exhibition on

Saturday 27th June between 9am and 5pm.

Aldinga Beach B-7 ages 8 - 12 years and Christies
Beach High School 13 to 18 years students will be
showcasing their artistic talents and we invite all their
family and friends and school friends and teachers to
come along and support them.
On the day there will be music by the students, judges for
the artwork, peoples choice award and prizes.
This exhibition will also be including some of the special
needs students as well.
So come along to the Aldinga Beach Shopping Centre,
Pridham Boulevard, Aldinga Beach and support our kids,
their school and our community.

Willunga Railway centenary DVD now available.

The Willunga Railway Line DVD is a collection of
historical scenes of railway operations recorded by
Adrian Thomas in the 1960s during the later days of the
Willunga line. It was especially produced by Andrew
Thomas to commemorate the Centenary of the Willunga line in 2015. Running time is approximately 55
minutes. It can be purchased for $30 from the Willunga
Court House Museum in High Street.

Opening Times for the Court House and Slate Museums during winter.
During winter months (June, July and August) the Museums will be closed on Tuesdays. Normal opening times will be
from 1-4pm on Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays, plus 11am to 4pm on the 2nd Saturday of the month. Groups are

Willunga Slate Carvings: Tracing unknown treasures of the nineteenth century with guest speaker Paddy
OToole on Sunday 21st June, 2pm at The Hub, St Peters Tce. Willunga.
Hear the story of Willungas slate carvers and their families and the surprising variety of carved items they created,
including mantle-pieces, sculptures, relief and headstones.
Paddy OToole, a member of Willunga National Trust, is researching this fascinating feature of Willunga slate. She and her
co-researcher, Mark Staniforth, recently discovered a practice piece of slate being used as a retaining wall in the garden
of an early Willunga home. Theyd love to hear about more examples!

Slate Heritage next to a pizza oven.

An important piece of history has been found by members of the National
Trust in Willunga. Willunga, famous today for the farmers market and gourmet
Slate splitting, Bill Meverley and John
produce, was a major slate producer in the nineteenth century. A lesser-known
Kernick at Australian Slate Quarries,
feature of Willunga slate quarrying was the creation of slate arts and crafts such
Willunga, c 1921, from Martin Dunstan
as headstones, mantle-pieces, sculptures and reliefs.
A recent auction of a property formerly owned by William Hawken, who was a significant slate carver and monumental mason in Willunga during the nineteenth century, has brought to light a slate practice piece believed to have been
carved by Hawkens teenage son Thomas. For some years the practice piece was part of the surround of an outdoor pizza
oven on the property. Both the old and the new owners of the property have generously agreed to donate the slate piece to
the Willunga Branch of the National Trust where it will be displayed at the Slate Museum. The discovery is one of the first
objects found as part of the new Slate Carving Identification Project.

JUDY
Very often when a parent leaves the home a young child
can struggle to stay on track as they grow. Judy had her
share of difficulties along the way to be sure, but discovered a secret early in life that gave her the needed stability
when things got tough.
At age 16 Judy wanted to 'get saved'. She longed to. She
said, 'I had to, I wanted to, but I didn't know how to'. Her
background in a correspondence Sunday school had not
prepared her for 'altar calls' and she just didn't understand
how or where to respond. But, after a couple of weeks
she plucked up the courage, a Salvation Army Officer
sitting next to her pointed the way; Judy made her peace
with God and discovered His amazing love.
So much so that she was virtually euphoric and sang all
the way to school for the next month or so. Now, years
later Judy declares: 'Its the most wonderful thing that has
ever happened to me. Jesus died for my sins so I could be
with Him for ever; and He really came into my life, and
gradually changed me - to become a better me.'

To 'get saved' all she had to do was ask, let go and trust.
And that's like driving a tram - which she did in Melbourne when some serious issues prompted a change of
vocation from church work. Judy points out that to drive a
tram you don't have to steer. You just stay on board and
it takes you to your destination.

WARM NIGHTS AND WINTER MATINEES

AT THE MOVIES
Winter is a great time to feel the warmth, the love and the
vibe at a unique local experience Cinemallunga.
Patrons are commenting on how much fun they are
having, enjoying the music, the singing, the dress-ups,
the food and the audience participation that makes
Cinemallunga so much more than a movie. Our June
lineup should be another cracker as we complete our
Monty Python series with 'The Meaning of Life'.
Come along dressed as your favourite Python character,
enjoy the pre-show and interval Python entertainment, as
well as our Sausage Sizzle, snacks and bar service.

from 6:30 on Sat June 20th to the Willunga Show Hall.

Our crew of trusty volunteers will be sweeping out the
popcorn and doubling up the next day for a classic all
ages movie 'The Lion King'. This is an ideal time to grab
the children or grandkids and enjoy an old-style movie
matinee while the rain pours down outside. African
dress-ups are highly encouraged as is singing along to the
unique sounds of the 'Jambo Jam Jungle Band' and all
the terrific songs from the movie. Come along and you'll
feel the love from 2pm Sunday June 21st at the Willunga

TRAILER BUILD COMPLETE.
After nearly two years the purpose built trailer the group
so desperately needs to cart around their kit when they
attend various functions, to put on their popular
demonstrations, is complete.
Im sure the group are grateful to Mario, the volunteer
who did most of the work and his forgiving wife for
being a trailer-widow and putting up with not having
access to half their back yard.

Green waste and cardboard / paper - Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) legislation bans all councils state wide from
sending these materials to landfill.
As of 1 September 2012 computers and televisions will also be part of this ban. Therefore these materials can no longer be
accepted as part of our hard waste collection.
The collection point is the Southern Waste Resource Management on Bakewell Road Seaford Rise (the Council dump off
South Road N of the bridge).
There is no cost. All you need to do is take your Ewaste to the appropriate tip and they will direct you to the Ewaste section.
You leave your stuff near two containers and exit the tip depositing the card they issue you with. This card will take you off
their computer.
This can be done any day of the week.

Fluorescent light tubes (this includes Compact Fluorescent lights now widely being used to replace incandescent globes)
contain mercury.
If disposed of in landfill (through your garbage bin) this can leach into the soil and water table with disastrous results.
They should be disposed of properly through recycling. Do not put them in your rubbish bin. Collection points are available
at Mitre 10 stores and the Willunga Environment Centre.

Aging:
The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.
Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me! I want people to know why I look this way.
I've travelled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

Tony Smith, Foundation and Life Member started bowling for ABBC even before the Club and Greens were
established around 1988.
For the first two years, Tony and his fellow bowlers used
the Willunga greens in order to compete in the Southern
Association.

But, like any animal, they still have their needs. They
might seem like theyll be fine with the house scraps, or the
back paddock, but did you know:

Farm pets should be vaccinated just like dogs and

cats?
Sheep, cows and alpacas, as well as other species,
need regular worming?
(For example, Haemonchus worms can actually
cause sudden death in very healthy, fat and fit
looking animals, especially sheep)
That farm pets should have mineral supplements at
certain times of the year?
(For example, alpacas need a Vitamin D injection
at 8 weeks, 6 months, and 12 months of age, then
once a year in winter)
That our region is known for trace mineral
deficiencies;
So just grazing on the grass in your paddock and
getting some hay might not be enough it could lead
to cobalt, copper or selenium deficiency. Every farm
animal species have their own feed requirements!
That prescribing laws for prescription medication in
farm animals require a farm visit every 12 months?
An annual health visit will meet these requirements
and allow us to dispense medication if required

The Get Together Club

A club exists in Aldinga Beach for adults with a disability
and their families.
The group encourages friendship, fun, connection and
inspiration.
It is the only group of its kind in the southern area.
The first meeting held at the Aldinga Life Care Hall was a
great success, with families sharing a meal, playing
games, and getting to know each other.
A variety of activities are planned for the monthly group
including singing, painting, puppet making, and guest
chefs. Ideas for activities are welcome and encouraged.
The Get Together Club has received a Community Grant
from the City of Onkaparinga and is also supported by
Minda Incorporated, Carer Support and Disability
SA. New members are always welcome.
The Get Together Club is held on the first Friday of each
month, at the Aldinga Life Care Hall, Pridham Blvd,
Aldinga Beach from 6.30 8.30pm.

Remembering Mum's Clothesline

There is one thing that's left out.
We had a long wooden pole (clothes pole (we called them
props)) that was used to push the clotheslines up
so that longer items (sheets/pants/etc.) didn't brush the
ground and get dirty.
I can hear my mother now...
THE BASIC RULES FOR CLOTHESLINES:
(If you don't even know what clotheslines are, better skip
this.)
1. You had to hang the socks by the toes... NOT the top.
2. You hung pants by the BOTTOM/cuffs... NOT the
waistbands.
3. You had to WASH the clothesline(s) before hanging
any clothes - walk the entire length of each line with a
damp cloth around the lines.
4. You had to hang the clothes in a certain order, and
always hang "whites" with "whites," and hang them first.
5. You NEVER hung a shirt by the shoulders - always by
the tail! What would the neighbours think?
6. Wash day on a Monday! NEVER hang clothes on the
weekend, or on Sunday, for Heaven's sake!
7. Hang the sheets and towels on the OUTSIDE lines so
you could hide your "unmentionables" in the middle
(perverts & busybodies, y'know!)
8. It didn't matter if it was sub-zero weather... clothes
would "freeze-dry."
9. ALWAYS gather the clothes pins when taking down
dry clothes! Pins left on the lines were "tacky"!
10. If you were efficient, you would line the clothes up so
that each item did not need two clothes pins, but shared
one of the clothes pins with the next washed item.
11. Clothes off of the line before dinner time, neatly
folded in the clothes basket, and ready to be ironed.
12. IRONED??!! Well, that's a whole OTHER subject!
And now a POEM...
A clothesline was a news forecast, To neighbours passing
by,
There were no secrets you could keep, When clothes were
hung to dry.
It also was a friendly link, For neighbours always knew
If company had stopped on by, To spend a night or two.
For then you'd see the "fancy sheets", And towels upon
the line;
You'd see the "company table cloths", With intricate designs.
The line announced a baby's birth, From folks who lived
inside,
As brand new infant clothes were hung, So carefully with
pride!
The ages of the children could, So readily be known
By watching how the sizes changed, You'd know how
much they'd grown!

faced recent serious health challenges.
A sumptuous Devonshire Morning Tea, lots

assist members of Zonta Noarlunga Southern Vales Club, who produce at least 30
breast cushions per month, providing comfort for women who have had recent breast
surgery.

patients, and how the breast cushions are
