SAP Certification: How to Approach and Pass

a SAP Certification
Posted by Ravi Sankar Venna Mar 22, 2012
Me, after passing Six SAP Certifications, I thought it is time for me to share my experiences, tips and ideas
with the user community on passing a SAP Certification. SAP Certification is a tensed affair not because
of its toughness, but, because of the money involved in it (gambling on one day cricket match
). This is
particularly true, in case if you have also attended SAP Training at SAP Education or SAP Authorised Training
Institutes. There are many people who have invested everything for just a Certificate. Me also one of such
bunch of jokers (my wife says !!!
) who invests everything in education / certification, and at the end of
the day, what you get is a peace of paper. However, the value of certification will come along with you and
definitely recognised your efforts in the long run. There are many people still blame the certification process
itself, because they feel that SAP has not tested their knowledge properly or they might have failed in one
of their SAP Certifications or they may feel SAP Certification is a waste of money. Probably, this blog is not
for so called intelligent people. I know the importance of hands on experience, but at the same time your
fundamentals must be clear to work on a system. I have seen people who are having very good knowledge and
5 end to end implementations under their belt, but failed. I cannot blame their knowledge, I feel, there is a GAP
in approach in attempting SAP Certification. This blog is for those who are really motivated to crack the SAP
Certification at any cost and prove themselves to add one more A4 size paper to the list of their certificates
I would like to summarize some my personal experiences, tips and ideas, may be helpful in approaching and
cracking SAP Certification.
Identify your strengths: Before writing a certification first know your strengths. If you want to write a
certification in a particular area, you should know whether you have worked in any of those areas and gained
any functional knowledge / domain knowledge / end user experience / configuration experience / coding
experience / training etc. Note that everybody cannot get all the opportunities in all the above areas. But, you
should able to Identify your strengths with respect to these areas, then decide which Certification you are
required to attempt.
Understand SAP Certification Policies: Unfortunately, SAP is having different type of policies with reference
to SAP Certification in different countries. I had to travel from India to Malaysia in order to write my SAP BW
Certification
. Dictionary meaning says Policy means, the rules are same for every one. But, unfortunately,
SAP Education policy change from country to country, person to person and organisation to organisation. They
are very complex, layman like me cannot understand
. First contact your local SAP Education Team and
understand what is their policy applicable for your case and get a written confirmation that you are eligible to
write the certification. Sometimes, it may so happen that you are eligible to write SAP Certification on day 1 and
surprisingly may not be eligible on day 2.
Formal Training: If you are really new to an area, but intended to write SAP Certification, you need to attend
the formal training. In some countries, SAP says, you must get trained from SAP Education / SAP Authorised
Training Partner. But, in other countries, you can register yourself and write the exam. If you are fortunate

SAP Certification: How to Approach and Pass a SAP Certification

enough to afford the money, then, it is recommended to get some sort of formal training. There may be
some exceptional people who has written some Certifications without formal training. But, please note all
the certification you cannot adopt the same approach. Some of the Certifications really test your ability and
conceptual knowledge. Please note that unless you are formally trained, you cannot reach the level of passing
the Certification Exam. If you pass such certifications without having any knowledge and training, then you are
a star
Plan in advance: You must plan in advance. At least couple of months are really required from the date of
start of your formal training and attempting the certification. If you are privileged to get a formal training from
SAP, you would get lot of new concepts every day and will have less time to practice and study, then your next
day starts for new movie
. Therefore, hardly you get any time to master the things. Since, you have gone
through every page in detail, probably, you may in a better position position to attempt the examination.
Exercises: At the end of the each chapter, there used to be exercises, but do not worry if you are not able to
complete them. In my whole life, I could not complete all the exercises in a book (little incompetent !!! LOL
).
Please note that the exercises are given only to get clarity on the theoretical and conceptual knowledge. They
are not intended to make you master or test your hands on exercises. Therefore, do not put much stress even
if you cannot complete them.
After Training - Before Examination: I would say this is the real crucial stage. During the training period, you
never had chance to revise anything. But, this is the period where you will really put the concepts into your
mind.
Read each Certification Curriculum book for not less than FIVE times, very RELIGIOUSLY, before
going to examination. First time, it would take longer period, but the more number of times you read,
the time would be reduced. You must keep a notes and note down the important points. Meanwhile,
you also highlight any important points with marker and note some questions with pencil. But, all my
Certification books are filled with different marker colours, so could not read anything
Give more importance to chapters with +++ or ++ ratings in the syllabus. You may expect more
number of questions out of these chapters.
You are not advised to memorise the things, but, try to read in order to understand the concepts.
Because, in certification, SAP is trying to test your conceptual knowledge, but not your memory.
Try to answer the questions given at the end of the each chapter.
Practice number of questions during this period. There are number of yahoo / google groups, where
you can find number of sample questions. Try to attempt them. Do not worry, if you are only able
to correct few in your first attempt. Even me used to get few correct answers only. If it is wrong,
understand why it is wrong, if it is correct, why it is correct, this is the only way, you can clear the
conceptual understanding, rather than blindly remembering the answers.
There are number of pictures / graphs that are being given in the Certification material. Please do not
look them as nice looking coloured pictures. Try to analyse them in functional / technical perspective.
Hopefully, you will find lot of meaning from them. Then read the underlying text in conjunction with
those pictures. You will see much and better confidence view.
If you have any time try to go through help.sap.com, where the concepts are written in crystal clear
language. If you find any time and also go through some of the threads on SDN, that would be a
bonus.
Day before examination:
Know the address of your examination center. Otherwise, you may get panic in searching for the
center tomorrow morning

SAP Certification: How to Approach and Pass a SAP Certification

Go to bed little early.
Do not read too much the whole night, it may not help, moreover, you may be sleepy in the
examination.
On the day of examination:
Get up little early and have relaxed bath, take adequate breakfast.
See if you have time and can rush through pages, but not spend too much time here, you will forget
going to exam.
Ensure that you have identity card (passport / driving license) or admission ticket, pen / pencil etc.
Ensure that you reach half an hour in advance to the examination time. One time, I could not reach
the examination center due to traffic and I am forced to reschedule my examination.
Whoever be the person, there will be definitely some tension boiling inside. But, try to keep yourself
as much relaxed as possible. Just think, even if you do not pass, it is not the end of the world, still
there is a tomorrow. Be calm.
In the Examination Hall:
Before coming to the examination, you must have enquired the pattern of the examination. In earlier pattern,
you can still get partial credit for partially correct questions. However, for new pattern, SAP only will award
marks if all your answers / sub answers are correct in a question. Even if you make one sub-question incorrect,
you will not get any marks for the total question. Therefore, your concepts must be crystal clear, you cannot
take chances to put lotteries in the examination center

, whereas in old pattern, many people used to put

lotteries for unknown questions (including me

), as you were not going to loose anything. No negative
marking is there in either current or old pattern of valuation.
Ensure you have completed all the formalities, like filling the form containing the name, contact
details, address (where you should get your certificate) etc.
Use elimination technique - First try to identify the wrong questions, which you can identify very
easily, then finally you will reach the right answers.
Concentrate on Single Answered Questions - For certain questions are called single answered
questions, which will have radio buttons, only one question will is the correct answer. I heard that they
have higher weightage, but not sure. Ensure that you reach the correct answer by using elimination
technique.
Try to attempt the easy questions first - Try to attempt the easy questions first, then this will give you
confidence and keep you in better frame of mind.
Mark the questions - If you cannot answer the question completely, then put them as "Marked
question", then at the end you can easily identify such questions and complete the answers. Even if
you do not put as "Marked Questions", still you can come back and complete them, it would waste
your valuable time.

Take few minutes break - Go to wash room and come back, your mind may be recharged.
Do not worry much about the time - You should usually get ample time. Every time, I used to get time
to go through all the questions 3 to 4 times. Therefore, in my opinion, time will not be a constraint,
unless somebody spends more than an hour on a single question
Give last ten minutes for re-look at all questions - At this point of time, you do not have the time to
read the question, only look at the question with your eyes and ensure that you have answered all
questions. So, go through in this fashion for all the questions.
Relax - If you are confident, then you can click submit button, if you are shivering, just sit, relax and
close your eyes, the system will take your session and issue the results. If you pass you will see
Congratulations, otherwise, you will see your failed message. You can note down the marks obtained
chapter wise on a plain paper.

SAP Certification: How to Approach and Pass a SAP Certification

Even if you pass or fail, do not much worry about it, calm / relax and come out of the examination
hall.
After the Examination:
You should get your hard copy of the certificate within 4 - 6 weeks of time from the date of your
Certification.
If not contact your Local / Global SAP Education Team, they should be able to help you out.
Contact SAP Education Team for password of your S ID. This you can use in order visit Service
Market Place (https://service.sap.com). Do not share this User ID and Password with others.
Contact SAP Education Team for your Certification Logo, which you can use on your CV.
Earlier SAP used to send S ID cards. I got for my three certifications, but not for other three. But, I do
not know where I misplaced

Hopefully, I believe that I have covered most important points and will be useful for SAP Certification
aspirants. This is the approach I used to follow. If you have any better approach, you are always welcome with
suggestions and updates.
All the best.
Best Regards,
Ravi
PS: Please do not waste your money on bogus web sites, who are selling the questions / useless materials.

No problem Karthik.
If they are so confident, can they give the same guarantee in writing. If you do not get a job for any reason
whatsoever, will the Institute is ready to refund the whole money paid without asking any further questions. You
should clearly know the marketing tricks of the Institutes.
Please note it is only placement assistance, but NOT job guarantee. Any SAP Education Partner luring the
candidates by way of "Job Guarantee" is against the SAP policies.

Hello Karthik,
Certification is not compulsory to get a job. Being a fresher it only gives knowledge to basic fundamentals of
configuration / business processes. SAP Certification is NOT a guaranteed gateway for job. Please note there
are still many consultants in the market looking for their job.
Employers look beyond Certification. You must have Education / Business Process Knowledge /
Configuration / Domain Knowledge / Communication / Soft Skills / Cultural Fit / Team Work etc.

Certification is one of the ingredients of the candidate. It is not the the sole one to get you a SAP Job. I
sincerely advise, you set your expectations correct before going for certification. You CANNOT blame SAP
Certification, if you do not get a job.
Hope this helps.

Hi Dinesh,
Evaluation is your eligibility criteria, whether you worked with SAP Partner, X Numbers of years of
implementation / support experience, letter from your employer etc. They are not going to judge your
knowledge to sit. It would only be tested in the exam.

Hellow Sir:
Happy to hear a word like this.
But want to ensure the same.
"Evaluation Process" means what you really mean to say. Their scope is to Evaluate knowledge of the
candidate in particular area or else again there also evaluating eligibility criteria's.
If eligibility criteria, then i fail there ?
Pls clarify. I'll be greatful.
Also i'll try to speak with them.

There are many people written if the fulfill the criteria. There are other options to contact.
Either through "call" or "chat" or "contact us". If you pass their evaluation process, you should be able to write
the exam without training, even in India.

Its very difficult to get a certification (associate level), even you have 5 years exp even then you have have
to pay Rs. 3,50000.00/- including training & taxes and then if you try to contact directly to SAP website
they are not responding , i have tried 5 times even the number which they have given to contact is fake
(+1800-872-1727). Actually if you go by the criteria of SAP you have to pay just pay Rs. 40,000.00/- including
of taxes, why i should i have to pay for training even if i am fulfilling the criteria. Please Guide.

Hi Ravi,
I am planning to give the SAP FI associate certification exam here in Canada, and am just now starting to
look for material on the internet to help be study. I have 7/8 years of Financial Accounting experience hence
i wanted to learn SAP and go into the consulting field. Currently i am registered with a website that will go
through the FICO module so that i can get a feel of the software, how it works, how to implement it and some
end-user stuff as well.
Your post was very helpful and gave me the vibe that i need to study with material that is up-to-date and
preferably from SAP itself.
My issue is i have searched the SAP website and cannot find anywhere if i an D/L or even have the option to
buy the book that gets me ready for the SAP FI certification. Is there even anything like this on the website or
do i have to take the SAP Courses online, which can be very expensive.
If there are providers that have books that i can buy to study for the SAP FI exam can you please let me know,
or guide me in the right direction will be very helpful.
thanks much.

Hi Hillary,
The best way is to read, read, read and again read. :-)
This is what I followed. First it took 4 days to complete a book, next time, 3 days, 2 days, 1 day, hours. Every
time you find something new when you read the materials. There are some diagrams in in the materials, which
speaks volumes, we may have to analyze those diagrams with creative minds :-)
Please prepare your own notes for each paragraph.
Mark it if there is anything important, you may have to remember some important program names / codes /
length of the fields etc.
Use Markers if there are any important things to be highlighted.
If you have some doubt, please check and look at the system.
But, the important thing, read as many times as possible, so meticulously and religiously. I believe this is the
key to success and please remember SAP Certification is NOT a test for your memory, it is a test for your basic
and fundamental knowledge of your SAP area.

Ravi

Hi Rahul,
PP is more tightly integrated with CO module.
It is good to have knowledge in multiple modules and however, you should stick to your core module. You
cannot be a consultant in multiple modules.
As PP and SD will have their own different directions, it would not really much help you.
CO on the other hand is tightly integrated with PP, particularly where there is a product costing.

If you are working for Infosys and have relevant experience, then please contact SAP India.
They would advise you regarding the evaluation process to be followed.
If you are not working at Infosys and does not have requisite experience, then you need to attend training from
SAP / Authorised Training Centers. Without which you cannot appear the SAP Certification.
Hope this helps.

Hi Nithin,
As long as you believe, then it would surely be a right move. Do not much worry about salary. Even while doing
your BI, you can still appear Prince2, PMP type of courses.
Unless you training SAP / SAP Authorised Training Centers, you would not be allowed to sit for SAP
Certification, if you are in India. When you register for the training, they would give you the certification
material.
Meanwhile, please also check the curriculum at
training.sap.com
You can also select which certification, you would like to see do is also available at the above link.

Thanks Ravi for quick and positive response.
I need your help to remove my confusion. As I told you that I am having 10 years of IT experence which
includes development and testing but that is not with much learning because never got any project where
there is learning. As a result,my profile is not getting shortlisted and I am not able to switch to new company to
grow my career.
Afraid of following risks :
1.Will it be right move to switch BI after 10 years?Because at this stage,I shoult try for project manager position
by
getting managment related certification
2.I have to start from zero and compromise with package which will impact my family.
Now,you will ask me then what motivates you to go for BI.Below analysis forcing me to go for BI.
1.My present automation testing of sap modules like FI,SD and MM made me fall in love with sap
screens.Firstly decided to go for sap BI but consultants told me that MBA/CA degree required for
that. So,decided to go for SAP BI which is technical and I love to be technical.I am studying BI at home and
enjoying reading.
2.yes package will be low but I think in next 4 years,I will be able to compensate package with 14
years.Because after certification,I will prepare resume at experience of 4 years and in next 4 yrs,it will be total 8
yrs which will give me high package.
3.As far as posititon is considered,I will not get good position but for me today, learning and package is
important which I will get in coming years.
4.I will get good onsite also in BI.
Please guide me whether I am in right direction or not.I need your hep because for me,your suggestions
matters more than my friends and family.
If I am thinking right then provide me following:
1.From where to get the BI certification details like which certification to select?
2.you talked about SAP partner in your answer, how to get the details of sap partner?
3.Which material I have to read for 4-5 times?is this material provided to me after I enroll for certification?
Waiting for your reply.
Thankful you to be part of this forum.

Hi Nitin,
If you are really passionate about SAP BI, that is sufficient.
BI still has lot of potential. Once you are into BI, then you will have the options to learn BOBJ and HANA, which
are currently having good opportunities in the market. Therefore, it is not a bad decision to learn SAP BI.
Getting first job may difficult, but not impossible. However, you should not much worry about it.
If you go through this blog, you should know how to pass a certification. Understanding the concept and
reading the materials for at least 5 times, religiously, should make you pass the exam. Ultimately, persistence
is the key.
Do not give up.
All the best.

Hello ravi sir ....i have read almost ur all blogs n u have described all the things very perfectlyyy....Sir need
ur suggestion as i have rite now completed my B.E degree in IT ...n as i am fresher was searching for job
for software testing or developer in india as all job seekers do ....bt at that time someone told me about sap
before that i was not having any idea what is SAP about n all...bt i took a litlle bit interest to find actually what
it is i went some links first on google slowly i came to know about it...then i came to know about SCN i started
reading some blogs n trying to understand what it is all about....finally i watched you tube videos of SAP
strategies modules what are there motos of company etc....finally all mixed information came to mind bt i tried
to understand from nothing to something all modules n All SAP technologies in shorter form not in details.....i
really got interested in finding all d related stuffs about SAP ...so i spend most of the time to search on internet
whatever i can get information from videos SCN etc....bt my main query is that as i am getting very interetsed
in learning in this SAP bt as i am fresher is it possible to become SAP consultant after getting knowledge about
particular module from a well known institute ...i would tell you frankly as i am not that much strong at financial
that i can pay for authorised institutes of SAP...but i am trying to find out best training center where i can learn
the module n clear out my ideas....so the question arises in my mind as i am fresher no domain experience in
SAP or any company ..is it possible for me to choose this way to become SAP consultant...from expert views
certification is not essential i will think about certification in future ...right now my mind is only thinking how to
enter this SAP world because i am much excited to learn it....
Also when i call to different institues for BW module training they suggest me to go for ABAP module because i
am fresher so only 1 module is available for me...else need some domain experience......is it correct???,.....SIr
please clear my doubts i really want to enter this SAP world....

In SAP materials, every page will have a diagram. I would always visualise that diagram when reading.
Wherever, there is no diagram, I would draw my own diagram and visualise. This visualisation would help to

SAP Certification: How to Approach and Pass a SAP Certification

In the current pattern, multiple choice questions would asked, at the same they would mention how many
correct questions are there. You cannot select more than the correct answers mentioned in the question.
Always try to identify the wrong answer first, then you can easily reach the right answer.
You should know the level at which it is created, that is more important and the relation with others.
You need to prepare a list something like this to get the relations between various master data is correct:
Linkage between various Finance & Controlling Master Data
Hope this helps you.

Ravi,
I must say this is something anyone planning to take up certifications must read. A lot naysayers. But I must
say this is exactly what our instructor used to say. Yes, you need to read the material multiple times, number
of times differs from person to person. Solve as many questions from webites, you only need to worry about
bogus websites if you have to pay.
After preparing for my exam, i dint touch my material on the day of the exam, went in, took a deep breath and I
am proud to say that I aced it.
It always helps if you have some one who has taken this route to explain it to new comers. Especially those
who paid a truckload and are now tensed up.
Good read,

If you are going for CRM, I would expect you to have some basic SD knowledge and business process
understanding, though it is not mandatory, but handy.
SD - More number of consultants - More opportunities
CRM - Compared to SD, less number of consultants - Limited Opportunities
I would always prefer to have SD + CRM skills. Please do not limit to a single module in your career.

Hi Nidhi,
Not sure which module you are preparing for.
I know some of my friends who failed two to three times, but that does not stop them from becoming the
established consultants.
Please do not spend any money on these websites, join some yahoo groups where you may get some practice
questions. But, the questions in exam are totally different.
My suggestions;
a) Read - Read - Read meticulously the curriculum books for not less than 5 times (each line by line and word
by word)
b) Prepare notes against each line

Generated by Jive on 2015-06-25+02:00

26

SAP Certification: How to Approach and Pass a SAP Certification

c) Note important points or tips in the curriculum books

d) Understand the basics well
e) Do not afford to skip any chapters
f) Daily read minimum 4 hours - maximum is up to you
g) if you get any sample questions - try to practice them
h) Use elimination technique - always try to identify the wrong answers, then you will easily find the right
answers
i) never try to rush and select the question in the first read - try to read 2 to 3 times and imagine what they are
asking, then select it
j) if you have any doubt on any answer, mark them, later point of exam, you can review them
h) ensure you have answered all questions, as there are no negative questions
If you follow all these points religiously, I do not see any reason why you cannot pass your exam.
All the best.

However, at time it is discretion of the SAP and they may even allow you for a higher version due to different

There is no training available for professional exam. Only you might be trained on associate exam. So, you can
only appear associate exam, if you are in India. I do not much bother whether it is associate or professional.
People may ask for certification, I would not personally waste my money by taking extra risk of attending

Hi John,
I believe you are talking about the material versions, I am not much concerned about the latest materials,
as almost all the versions contain the same contents, except minor changes. Any material would suffice the
reading, but if you have latest material, that is a bonus.
For certification, you need to visit
training.sap.com
and search for the available certifications. You would find the certification / curriculum / pass marks etc.
I would normally not recommend professional certification, unless you have 10+ years of strong knowledge in
that particular area.
Regards,
Ravi

Hi Bhagya
Please go with CO module as there are many people with FI.
However it is always good to know fundamentals of FI.
I am sure there are many mentors on SCN should be able to help you.
All the best.
Kind Regards
Ravi

I have experience in different industries. I am very strong in accounting concepts and can understand the
business process, like how various functions/departments are inter-related in any organisation. I have good
presentation skills and by nature I find myself good in logical and analytic skills. I love accounting. 10 years ago
I went for SAP-FICO training, but do not remember anything, except that I was able to understand the subject
at that point of time. As you mentioned, financial commitments did not allow me to take up a starting salary
then. But now, I have saved for a living and can have a break or lower salary for few/3 years. I want to pursue
my passion. Muscat is a long way to go on technology. I would be back in India... actually want to have travel
opportunity. If only I get a mentor............ wow!

Thanks. I am feeling better.

SAP Certification: How to Approach and Pass a SAP Certification

The only thing probably the salary would be a constraint at least for initial stages of your SAP career. I am not
sure how the SAP market in Muscat. But, yes, with your 20 years of finance experience, surely it would value
added in the coming days. Once you have few years of SAP FICO, then you can also look into BPC etc., where
they have more demand in the market.
Kind Regards,
Ravi

Hi Bhagya Lakshmi,
I am not sure you are in which position in your current job. If you are already earning good and in a senior
position, probably, it may not be much wise to become a SAP consultant. But, that does not mean that
you should not learn SAP. Particularly, SAP FICO market is very competitive, as number of certified and
experienced people around. You can always take a calculated risk even at this stage. But, if you are selected
as SAP consultant then probably, you need to work with / under people who are having less experience than
you. You need to get ready for that.
Kind Regards,
Ravi
