Introduction to the Visual and Performing Arts is a course offered only to members of the Arts Learning

commonalities that exist in all arts endeavors, the artist as citizen and the concurrent responsibilities, and the
almost infinite possibilities opened in the market place by the study of the arts. The course will also include guest
lectures by resident and visiting artist/scholars and field experiences, such as attending exhibits and performances
with pre- and post-event discussions.

Course Goals and Objectives:

To broaden understanding of the arts as a whole (most arts students arrive at universities with an understanding
of only one artistic discipline)
To understand the commonalities that exist in the arts disciplines
To explore the history and nature of creativity
To understand the artist as citizen and the students opportunity to be a positive force at JMU and in society
To build an interdisciplinary arts community at JMU and beyond

Attendance
It is mandatory that you attend lectures and venue visits scheduled during your class time or participate in group
discussion of those events.
Required performances will take place outside of your normally scheduled class time. As they usually require the
purchase of a ticket (it should total no more than $44 total for the semester), you will need to document that your
attendance with a photograph of you and your ticket at the performance emailed to your professor or posted on
Canvas with your reflection.
What if I have to miss a class or performance?
If an emergency arises where you must miss an assigned performance or class period you must document this
with both instructors via email. You will be assigned an alternative activity WITH a 3-5 pages response paper in
lieu of class participation and discussion to be turned in through Canvas.

Academic Honesty:
Making references to the work of others strengthens your own work by granting you greater authority and by
showing that you are part of a discussion located within an intellectual community. When you make references to
the ideas of others, it is essential to provide proper attribution and citation. Failing to do so is considered
academic dishonesty, as is copying or paraphrasing someone elses work without giving credit to the original. The
result of plagiarism or other forms of academic dishonesty will lead to consequences ranging from failure on an
assignment to failure in the course to dismissal from the university. Because the disciplines of the Humanities and
Arts value collaborative work, you will be encouraged to share ideas and to include the ideas of others in your
papers, but you must use proper citation. Please ask if you are in doubt about the use of a citation. Honest
mistakes can always be corrected or prevented. The JMU Honor Code is available at
http://www.jmu.edu/honor/code.shtml.

Disability Accommodations:
If you need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability, you should contact the Office of Disability
Services (Wilson Hall, Room 107, www.jmu.edu/ods, 540-568-6705), if you have not previously done so. Disability
Services will provide you with an Access Plan Letter that will verify your need for services and make
recommendations for accommodations to be used in the classroom. Once you have presented us with this letter,
we will sit down with you and review the course requirements, your disability characteristics, and your requested
accommodations to develop an individualized plan, appropriate for ARTS 100E.

Inclement Weather Policies:
