Chapter 12.9
INTRODUCTION
This chapter describes the Aria Pick Modules first introduced on the NCR
Personas 86 Dispenser described in Chapter 12.8, Bill Alignment Dispensers.
The single and double Aria Pick Modules are interchangeable
replacements for the 56XX single and double pick modules described in
Chapter 12.6, The 56XX Enhanced Currency Dispenser.
Differences between the Aria and 56XX pick modules are as follows:
z The Aria pick module vertical transport drives the notes between a single
set of belts and skidplates rather than the shaft and pinch wheels of the
56XX type
z No gulp feed detection on Aria
z No low temperature detection on Aria
z Aria transport sensors are hard wired into the harness.
COMPATIBILITY
The Aria single and double pick modules are interchangeable with the 56XX
Enhanced Currency dispenser pick modules but cannot be used with the
H-8010- 56XX-XX-08 and H-8010-56XX-XX-08 (IE) presenters.
NOTE: 1. Where there is a mixture of Aria and 56XX type pick modules,
then the Aria type must always be the bottom pick module.
NOTE: 2. When an Aria Pick Module is present in a 56XX Enhanced
Currency Dispenser the presenter timing must be advanced one tooth, see
Adjustments.

MECHANICAL DESCRIPTION
There are two types of Aria pick module; the single pick module holds one
currency cassette, and the double pick module holds two cassettes, one above
the other.
The Aria single pick module is shown in the illustration below.
The Aria double pick module is shown in the following two illustrations:

pick module timing relationship that the stacker wheel type of presenter does,
however, the Aria pick modules should still be set in the same way to ensure
clean delivery of the bills from the cassette into the pick module transport.
Pick Timing
The pick shaft gets its oscillating motion from the gear segment attached to a
crank which is driven by a cam follower riding in a track in the cluster drive
cam. The cluster drive is driven from the transport through an idler gear. The
pick arms move continuously between a position where the pick vacuum cups
are above the D wheels to where the vacuum cups are pushing the currency
back into the cassette.
Attached to the cluster drive cam is a plastic disk printed with timing
marks. A cut out section of the disk forms a timing arc which is detected by an
optical switch and is used (ANDed with a signal from the currency dispenser
control board) to produce the electrical pulses that energize and de-energize
the pick solenoid valve. The solenoid valve is energized following a transition
through sensor clear to sensor blocked and it remains energized while the
segment on the disk is obscuring the optical sensor. This time corresponds to
the time when the pick arms are just reversing away from the currency in the
cassette until they are above the D wheels.
When the solenoid valve is de-energized it closes off the pump section of
tubing. The tubing to the pick arm vents to atmosphere via backflow through
the de-energized solenoid. The note drops off the suction cups and is gripped
by the D wheels and pinch rolls.
The letter D and numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4 printed on the timing disk are
used to set and check the timing of individual pick modules and this
adjustment is described in the Service Aids section of this chapter.
Pick Sensor
The pick sensor consists of two assemblies hard wired to the pick harness. A
photo-transistor is on one assembly and an infra-red light emitting diode is on
the other. The light emitting diode is in the same assembly as the cassette low
sensor (see next section). The pick sensor and the LED are attached so that
they look across the path of the notes between the pick mechanism and the
transport. When a note blocks the light path, it is detected. The pick sensor
output is converted into note width by monitoring the number of interrupts
while the sensor is blocked with the interrupts generated by the main
transport timing disk on the presenter. A difference of plus 3 or minus 5
timing wheel ticks in width from the known width of the currency (stored in
NVRAM) will cause the note to be rejected to the purge bin and the pick to be
attempted three more times.
12.9-6
Keyplate
Reed Switch
and Pick LED
Assembly
The cassette low sensor consists of a reed switch attached to the pick module
keyplate. The assembly also houses the pick LED. The reed switch is held on a
bracket which projects into the open door of the cassette. It operates when a
permanent magnet attached to the cassette currency pusher mechanism
approaches the front of the cassette as the currency is dispensed. In the
plastic cassette, the position of this magnet can be set in two positions to
actuate the switch when 75 50 or 200 50 notes are left in the cassette.
Gulp Feed Detector
The Aria pick modules do not have a gulp feed detector. If Aria and 56XX pick
modules are mixed and a gulp feed occurs on the 56XX type, then the signal is
still passed via the Aria modules to the Currency Dispenser Control Board
where it will immediately stop the dispenser main motor.
NOTE: Gulp Feed Detect is not supported by the New Interior Dispenser
Control Board.
Low Temperature Thermistor
The Aria pick modules do not have a low temperature thermistor. The pick
harness provides a short to ground on pins 3 and 5 of connector J5 so that the
TEMP_OUT- signal to the P86 Currency Dispenser Control Board always
indicates high (above 10 deg. C) temperatures.
A low temperature signal from a 56XX Pick Module fitted to the P86
Currency Dispenser will still be passed to the P86 Currency Dispenser
Control Board where it will cause the software to allow a longer time for the
main motor to create a vacuum before sending the PICK signal, as before (see
Chapter 12.6 - Thermistor).
Low Temperature Detection is not supported by the New Interior
Dispenser Control Board.
The Pick Module Transport
In the pick module transport the D-Wheel shaft and the pinch wheel shaft are
driven through a gear train. The gear train of the top pick module meshes
with the gear train of the presenter. In the Aria double pick module, the gear
train of the second pick position is driven by a toothed belt from the top

module.
Notes are driven from the D-Wheel/pinch wheel shafts into plastic note
guides that deflect them into the vertical transport. The vertical transport
consists of three belts stretched between an upper (driven) shaft and a lower
idler shaft. These belts press the notes against smooth plastic skid plates
while driving them upwards into, either the transport of a higher pick module
or the presenter transport. The top shaft of the pick module vertical transport
is driven by a toothed belt from a pulley wheel fixed to the D-Wheel shaft.
Main Motor and Vacuum Pump
The dispenser main motor drives the LVDT transport and all pick modules via
toothed timing belts. It also drives the vacuum pump to provide a vacuum to
the pick line via 6 mm bore tubing. A vacuum reservoir is located near the
pump to improve the system vacuum, and an air filter in the tubing above the
first pick module protects the pump from damage caused by ingress of grit
particles.
Motor Control Circuit
The motor control circuits are located on the dispenser control board. These
circuits include: the drive circuits for the main motor, the presenter transport
motor, the bill alignment motor, and the clamp motor.
12.9-8
ELECTRICAL DESCRIPTION
The components described in this section are those that achieve the control of
the pick modules of the dispenser either by converting firmware commands
into electrical signals or by sensing an event in the pick modules and
producing an equivalent electrical response. The components are described
under the headings:
The Single Pick Interface board acts as an interface between the actuators
and sensors in the Currency Dispenser Single Pick Module and the Currency
Dispenser Control board.
This board is a mixed technology board using Surface Mount Technology
(SMT) and Plated Through Hole (PTH) components. A ribbon cable harness
connects the board to cascaded Pick Interface boards in two, three, or four cassette dispensers. All the control lines from the Dispenser Control board, and
the sensor information returning to that board, are routed via a parallel bus
interface. Signals between cascaded Pick Interface boards are boosted where
necessary.

The output signals of the decode logic on one Single Pick Interface Board
are the signals SEL1 and SEL1-.
SEL1- enables the bus drivers for the appropriate pick module (sheet 4).
These drivers output the information relating to the currency cassette and
pick module temperature (see the Data Bus section).
SEL 1 enables the appropriate pick valve solenoid (sheet 3).
Pick Valve Solenoid Operation
The PICK signal is output from the Currency Dispenser Control Board and is
fed to logic controlling the pick valve solenoid. The pick valve solenoid driver
is enabled when PICK is high, SEL1 is high, DISABLE- is high, and the
output of the voltage comparator for the pickarm optotransmissive switch
changes from low to high (sheet 3).
Sensor LEDs Enable
LEDON is output from the Currency Dispenser Control Board. When set high,
it enables all LEDs associated with pick module pick sensors (sheets 5 and 6).
Pick Module Magnetic Reed Switches
Four magnetically operated reed switches are mounted on the underside of
the Single Pick Interface Board (sheet 4). They are placed to correspond to the
positions of the identification magnets on the side of the currency cassette. If,
for example, a magnet is alongside the reed switch SW1, in either of the
individual pick modules, the line CAS_ID1_OUT- is set low. The same applies
to CAS_ID2_OUT-, CAS_ID3_OUT-, and CAS_ID4_OUT-.
In this way, the cassettes inserted in the Single Pick Module can be identified according to the type of currency contained.
A further reed switch is mounted close to the pick arm in the pick module.
This switch is operated by a magnet inside the currency cassette. The magnet
moves as the stack of currency bills is dispensed and it operates the reed
switch when the cassette reaches a low state (nearly empty). The signal
CASLOW_OUT- becomes low (sheet 4) if the currency cassette in the Single
Pick Module reaches the low state.

OPTICAL SENSORS
Optical sensors in the Single Pick Module are:
12.9-14
z LED_PICK1+ provides a voltage to the LED anode from the +12 V supply
via a pnp transistor (enabled by the LED_ON signal) and a 280R limiting
resistance (sheet 6). The LED cathode is connected to ground return at
connector J3.
z SEN1+ connects the optical transistor collector to the +12 V supply via a
1k0 resistor which limits the current in the event of a short circuit to
ground (sheet 6).
z SEN1- provides a return from the optical transistor emitter to the 20k
gain setting resistor (sheet 5). This gives a voltage proportional to the
light incident upon the optical transistor, from the LED assembly.
THERMISTOR
Aria pick modules do not have the low temperature sensing thermistor. The
signal TEMP1 is connected to ground at pin 6 of connector J2 so producing an
output from the voltage comparator of logic 1, representing a normal
operating temperature.
When Aria and 56XX pick modules are used together then a low
temperature signal from a thermistor in a 56XX pick module would be passed
via the Aria to the control board. When a low temperature signal is seen the
software allows a longer time for the main motor to create the vacuum before
sending the PICK signal. An indication of the low temperature condition is
also seen in the M-DATA returned to level 1 diagnostic tests.

The output signals of the decode logic on one Double Pick Interface board
are the signals SEL1, SEL1-, SEL2, and SEL2-.
SEL1- and SEL2- enable the bus drivers for the appropriate pick unit
(sheet 4). These drivers output the information relating to the currency cassette and pick unit temperature (see the Data Bus section).
SEL 1 and SEL2 enable the appropriate pick valve solenoids (sheet 3).
Pick Valve Solenoid Operation
The PICK signal is output from the Enhanced Currency Dispenser Control
board and is fed to logic controlling the pick valve solenoid (sheet 3). The pick
valve solenoid driver for the first pick unit is enabled when PICK is high,
SEL1 is high, DISABLE- is high, and the output of the voltage comparator for
the Pickarm1 optotransmissive switch changes from low to high (sheet 3). The
pick valve solenoid driver for the second pick unit is enabled when PICK is
high, SEL2 is high, DISABLE- is high, and the output of the voltage
comparator for the Pickarm2 optotransmissive switch changes from low to
high (sheet 3).
Sensor LEDs Enable
LEDON is output from the Enhanced Currency Dispenser Control board and
is repowered on the Pick Interface board (sheet 5). As LED_ON_OUT, it
enables all the LEDs associated with the pick module sensors (sheets 6 and 8).
Pick Unit Magnetic Reed Switches
Eight magnetically operated reed switches (sheet 4) are mounted on the
underside of the Double Pick Interface board. They are placed in two groups of
four to correspond to the positions of the identification magnets on the side of
the currency cassettes. Switches SW1, SW2, SW3 and SW4 are in the upper
pick unit, and switches SW5, SW6, SW7 and SW8 are in the lower. If, for
example, a magnet is alongside the reed switch SW1, in the top pick unit
either of the individual pick units, the line CAS_ID1_OUT- is set low. The
same applies to CAS_ID2_OUT-, CAS_ID3_OUT-, and CAS_ID4_OUT-.

Optical sensors in the Double Pick Module are:
z VLV1_24V provides a connection from one terminal of the first pick unit
solenoid to the +24 V supply via connector J5, pin 14, and an on-board 1 A

ated with the PICK command from the Currency Dispenser Control board
(see the section Pick Valve Solenoid Operation).
VLV2_24V and VLV2_ON- A are used for the second pick unit solenoid.
THERMISTOR
There is no low temperature thermistor in the Aria pick module, however, the
circuit still exists on the double pick interface board (sheet 4). The TEMP1
and TEMP2 signals on pins 3 and 19 of connector J5 are connected directly to
ground by the Aria pick module harness. This simulates a low resistance
thermistor causing a logic 1 output from the voltage comparator so that the
signal TEMP_OUT to the Control Board always indicates normal operating
temperature.
If 56XX pick modules are used together with Aria pick modules, then a
low temperature indication from a thermistor in one of the 56XX type will be
passed via the Aria pick module to the Dispenser Control Board and will cause
software to run the main motor for a longer time, to generate the vacuum,
before the PICK signal is generated. An indication of the low temperature
condition is also seen in the M-DATA returned to level 1 diagnostic tests.

SERVICE AIDS
The following sections contain information relevant to the servicing and
operating procedures of the pick modules.
ADJUSTMENTS
PICK MODULE TIMING
Dispensers that use the bill alignment mechanism to form the note stack (the
P86 and NID) do not require any timing relationship to be set between the
action of the pick modules and the presenter. When Aria pick modules are
used in dispensers with stacker wheels (56XX) then there is an additional
adjustment to presenter timing.
With both types of presenter the pick module to pick module relationship
does, however, still require to be set. The adjustment procedures in this
section are described for single and double pick modules. The aim of these
procedures is to attach correctly timed pick modules below the presenter with
the timing disks of the pick units aligned to the timing marks 1, 2, 3, and 4,
reading from the topmost pick module to the bottom.
56XX dispensers may be built in 1, 2, 3 and 4 high configurations while
the P86 Currency Dispenser and NID are built only 2, 3 and 4 high:

1. Position the teeth mesh between the drive segment and pick line so that
the upper tooth of the drive segment is above the upper tooth of the pick
line.
2. Take off and retain the 26T idler gear (Part Number 445-0633190) directly
below the pick line (left side of the module looking from the currency cassette). See the following illustration:
12.9-30
3. Rotate the gears of the pick module transport until the pick D wheel is
free of its mating tension wheel.
4. Rotate the drive cluster in a clockwise direction until the D timing mark
on the timing disk lines up with the timing sensor body.
5. Rotate the gears of the pick module transport until the interrupted part of
the pick D wheels is away from the pick arms. Turn the gears until a gap
of from 0.5 mm 0.5 mm (0.02 in. 0.02 in.) exists between the leading
edges of the pick D wheels and the tension wheels as shown in the first figure above.
6. Replace the idler gear removed in step 2. Be careful not to dislodge the setting.
7. Carry out steps 1 to 6 on the lower pick unit.
Double Pick Module Pick Unit Relationship
When the internal timing of both pick units of the double pick module has
been set, the pick units have to be locked in a fixed timing relationship.
Proceed as follows:
1. Rotate the gear train of the upper pick unit to move the timing disk in a
clockwise direction until the 1 timing mark on the drive cluster timing
disk lines up with the timing sensor body.
CAUTION
Always rotate the gear train in its normal direction of travel.
The pick timing disks should turn clockwise. Do not move the
gear train backwards and forwards.
2. Rotate the gear train of the lower pick unit until the 2 timing mark on the
drive cluster timing disk lines up with the timing sensor body.
3. Place the timing belt (removed in the procedure Separating the Pick
Units of the Double Pick Module) around the pulley wheel of the lower
pick position and put it on as many teeth as possible of the pulley wheel of
the upper pick position, taking care not to dislodge the settings. Turn the
upper gear train in the normal direction of travel (see Caution above) to
ride the timing belt fully on to the pulley wheel.

Presenter Timing
NOTE: The Personas 86 dispenser and the NID do not require any timing
relationship to be set between the action of the pick modules and the
presenter.
When Aria pick modules are used on a stacker wheel dispenser (56XX type)
then the presenter must be set as follows:
NOTE: 1. The bill transport arrangements vary in the front access, rear
access and through-the-wall presenters but the location of the presenter
timing gears is constant.
NOTE: 2. When the Aria Double Pick Module is present in a 56XX Enhanced
Currency Dispenser installed in NCR 56XX ATMs, the presenter timing
must be advanced one tooth.
1. Remove the circlip retaining the stacker line gear (1) and disengage the
gear from the idler gear, without removing it from the hex on the shaft.
2. Rotate the stacker line gear (1) to a position where any of its twelve trian-
12.9-32
gular timing marks (3) is next to the timing stud (2) in the frame.
3. Advance the stacker line gear (1) one tooth (see Note 2 above).
4. Re-engage the gear and refit the circlip.
Pick Module To Presenter Timing
Once the pick modules have been prepared, as in the previous procedures, the
pick modules can be assembled with a presenter to produce the complete
currency dispenser. There are no timing adjustments to the presenter.
CAUTION
The dispenser is heavy. Get help to lift it.

z Check that the reed switch housing is not cracked (replace if necessary)
NOTE: A note low condition may not be identified if the read switch housing
is damaged.
z Inspect the pick lines for broken nozzles. Replace the pick line if broken,
cracked or bent
z Check and replace suction cups if necessary. Read the Suction Cups section shown over
z Lower usage ATMs (150 dispense operations daily, 1 bill per pick module
per operation); replace suction cups annually
z Medium usage ATMs (250 dispense operations daily, 2 bill per pick module per operation); replace suction cups every six months
z Higher usage ATMs (350 dispense operations daily, 3 bill per pick module
per operation); replace suction cups every three months.

Presenter Assembly
z Look to see if the air filter above the top pick module is contaminated with
dust, and replace it if it is (Part No. 445-0612449).
NOTE: Annual replacement of the filter is recommended. When you disturb
the air filter some dust will drop down the tubing to the lowest pick module. Disconnect the tube from the lowest pick solenoid and clean the dust
from the tube and solenoid.
z Measure the vacuum above and below the in-line air filter. The minimum
acceptable vacuum is 19 in. Hg /650 mbar. Both readings must be identical; replace the air filter if the two readings are not the same
z Strip and clean the pump if the vacuum level is low
NOTE: To maximise ATM availability, the pump should be replaced and the
original pump should be taken to a repair centre.

LUBRICATION
This section describes the lubrication of the pick module during component
replacement.
LUBRICANT TYPE
The following lubricants are recommended:
Lubricant
Type
For No.2 General Purpose Oil any one of the following lubricants can be
used:
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
The following general instructions must be observed:
1. Use clean lubricants from properly labelled containers.
2. Satisfactory operation of mechanical components depends upon proper
lubrication. Follow the specific lubrication instructions in the following
paragraphs in detail.
3. Avoid excessive lubrication. Apply only that amount which will provide a
thin coating on the entire bearing area or surface, unless otherwise specified.
4. All parts to be lubricated must be free from dust, corrosion and metal
chips.
5. Lubricate bearing areas and surfaces during assembly, unless conditions
caused by subsequent handling are detrimental (for example, accumulation of chips, grit, and so on) to the proper operation of the part. In those
cases lubrication should be applied after assembly.
6. Apply lubricants using the most convenient method when none is specified, that is by brushing, dipping, or oil can. Spraying is not recommended.
7. Lubricate all spring hooks and spring studs with lubricant B.
8. Working clipped or riveted assemblies should not be lubricated before riveting but only after all processes, handling, or storage involving exposure
to dirt or serious atmospheric contamination are past.
9. On assemblies that have shafts on which one or more moving parts are
assembled, lubricate both the shaft and the hub areas on each part with
the specified lubricant.
10. Lubricants can cause serious deterioration of rubber. Avoid contamination
of drive belts and drive rolls.
CAUTION
Make sure that no lubricant spills on to the teeth of
gears as this may impair their performance.
