Filtertechnik is the filtration division of Hydrotechnik UK Ltd.

It was created in 2000 to cater for industry demand for filtration supply and expertise. Filtertechnik
is an independent supplier of filter products and has access to all major filter brands. This means
that we will always supply the right filter for the right application rather than compromise on
effectiveness and efficiency.
We are industry leaders in predictive maintenance through contamination control as a means of
improving filtration and production and achieving significant company savings.

Filtertechniks Aim
Our aim is to form progressive working partnerships with major companies from which they will
benefit through implementation of a customised managed filtration programme using contamination
control and relevant technical and filtration products to ultimately achieve better filtration and
therefore improved production and quality.

CONTAMINATION
Contamination causes failures in hydraulic and lube systems
Over 80% of all hydraulic system failures are caused by contaminants in the fluid. Even when no immediate failures occur,
high contamination levels can sharply decrease operating efficiency.
Contamination is defined as any substance which is foreign to a fluid system and damaging to its performance.
Contamination can exist as a gas, liquid or solid. Solid contamination, generally referred to as particulate contamination,
comes in all sizes and shapes and is normally abrasive. High contaminant levels accelerate component wear and decrease
service life. Worn components, in turn contribute to inefficient system operation, seizure of parts, higher fluid
temperatures, leakage, and loss of control.
All of these phenomena are the result of direct mechanical action between the contaminants and the system components.
Contamination can also act as a catalyst to accelerate oxidation of the fluid and spur the chemical breakdown of its
constituents.

High carbon content

causes wear and leads to
expensive breakdowns

Visible particulate is a
major contaminant that
causes plant failures

80% of all hydraulic &

lubrication failures are
caused by water or particulate
contamination

Burnt oil additive

package damaged,
capable of being
cleaned allowing
new additive
package to be added

This oil appears clean,

however, particles under 40
micron are not visible to the
naked eye

When viewed under a microscope (200x)

there are major wear contaminants

All the above problems can be rectified using filtration!

Filtertechniks range of off-line kidney filter systems for portable or permanent fixture
All filters remove large amounts of water and particulate ingress.
Clean down to 1 micron ISO 13/11/8 NAS class 2

fabric provides maximum

Crush-protective center tube.

In March 2000, Schroeder replaced its S media with a new generation synthetic Excellent (Z) Media. At every level of
filtration from 1 to 25 , the Z media has significantly outperformed its predecessor.
The special class of micro-glass and other fibers used in Z media are manufactured with utmost precision, to specific
thicknesses and densities, and bonded with select resins to create material with extra fine passages. No other filter media
can provide the benefits of Schroeders Excellent Z media: maximum dirt-holding capacity, superior particle capture,
minimum pressure drop, high flow rate and low operating cost. The typical multiple layer construction (shown in Figure 11)
has evolved from comprehensive laboratory testing to provide extended element life and system protection.
Each successive layer performs a distinct and necessary function. The outermost layer is designed to maintain element
integrity. Beyond this layer is a polypropylene scrim, offering coarse filtration and protection for the more delicate filtering
layers within. Multiple sheets of fine filtering media follow, providing intricate passageways for the entrapment of dirt
particles. Together, the various layers of filter media provide the ideal combination for peak filtration performance.

Table 13 shows the ISO 4572 and ISO 16889 absolute ratings and filtration ratios (Betas) for SchroederZ media elemens
Z1, Z3, Z5, Z10 and Z25, while Table 14(a) provides a comparison of the old S-media to the new Excellent Z media. Figures
12(a) and (b) depict the information in Tables 14(a) and (b) graphically and provide corresponding % efficiencies.
The numbers contained in the tables are simply specific data points from the plots for the respective media shown. The
filtration ratio (Beta) is shown on the left side and the equivalent particle capture efficiency (%) is shown on the right for
particle sizes shown across the bottom. The absolute rating (in Table 13) indicates the particle size at which the filtration
ratio for the element is greater than a given number.
Example of absolute rating per ISO 4572. Schroeder Z1 media has an absolute rating of 1.0 for a Beta of 200; this can be
written as 1 200. In other words, Z1 media is 99.5% efficient at capturing particles that are 1 micron in size and larger. Per
the new ISO 16889, the efficiency is stated with x(c) 75, 100, 200, 1000.

FLUID ANALYSIS
Laboratory fluid analysis
Fluid analysis service

Filtertechnik provides a fluid analysis service as a support for its filtration and test & data logging customers.
The analysis service enables customers to take their own fluid samples using bottles pre-cleaned to ISO 3722 standards,
and post them off in a bottle (pre-labelled bottle and box provided).
The customer fills in a form giving facts such as machine identification, serial number, fluid type etc, so as to help build a
historical database of cleanliness for the same machine. Results are then e-mailed back to the customer in 2-3 working
days in a pdf format. Alternatively, results may be posted by Royal Mail or accessed via the web.
Results sheets show the latest ISO 4406:1999 4/6/14 micron (c) coding (e.g. 18/14/11) using APC equipment calibrated
in accordance with ISO 11171. The reports also give valuable information on the condition of the oil e.g. water
contamination, metal content etc. Subsequent reports for the same machine build up a monitoring history and these are
displayed graphically over time, thus providing a trend analysis.
The cost of the service includes the bottle, label & identification sheet and full report. Alternatively, Filtertechnik can offer
a full oil cleanliness monitoring package whereby Filtertechnik's engineers visit to take the samples and provide advice on
interpreting sample results.

WATER REMOVAL
80% of all hydraulic failure is due to contamination

Water removal
(breathers & elements)
A major source of hydraulic and
lubrication problems

Contamination in oil is caused by both water and solid particulate.

Contamination is harmful to oil and the system component parts that it
lubricates.
The presence of water in oil will lead to breakdowns which can be extremely
costly for a company just think of the cost of downtime, the loss of
production, the cost of repair and replacement of expensive parts, as well
as administration costs.

However, the cost of removing water from your oil need not be
significant and it is in fact a cost-saving exercise as it will greatly
reduce the number of breakdowns your system will experience
and increase productivity and reliability.
Filtertechnik offers a range of water removal methods suitable for
all types of systems and levels of contamination.

WATER REMOVAL
Schroeder SVD vacuum dehydrators
The all new SVD Vacuum dehydrator units are designed to remove free and dissolved water from hydraulic or lubricating
oils and then further dry and filter oil down to below 100ppm water and one micron particle size. The figures quoted in
the sizing table here are the SVD capabilities for removing free water. Touch panel control display, and optional on-line
particle counter. Large capacity filtration and optional heaters make these units a powerful unit for taking control of
serious water and contamination issues.

Centrifuge and condensation methods typically only remove free water.

The SVD, which uses vacuum dehydration, can remove both free water
and dissolved water from the oil, as well as dissolved gasses. In
addition, solid contaminants are also removed by highly efficient
membrane elements. The SVD is intended to be used on large hydraulic
and lubricating circuits that have a minimal 1,000 gallon reservoir.
Negative effects of water in hydraulic oil:
 Depletion of additives

 Increased acidity of oil

 Reduction in lubricity

 Accelerated aging of components

Envelope dimensions will change in

future models. Contact factory for details

When connected to the hydraulic reservoir of a system with

wet oil, the SVD unit draws down oil in its chamber. Oil
slowly cascades down the reactor chamber. Water is
separated in the form of vapour and is removed by the
vacuum pump. This vapour can be released into the
atmosphere or condensed into a separate reservoir. The
purified oil is drained from the reactor chamber through a
pump back to the system reservoir at a continuous flow
rate. The oil is now dry and free of water (within the
specifications provided).
Removes 100% of free and over 90% of dissolved

water and as well as 100% of free and over 90% of

dissolved gases.

FLUSHING
Hot Oil Flushing Service
Hot oil flushing is ideal for troublesome systems or where large amounts of contamination have been introduced to a
machine. The rigs we use are the latest in flushing technology. These are very portable hot oil pulsation units designed to
work on any system with up to 180mm (7") inside diameter pipework.
On-board Particle Counters ensure the correct ISO / NAS cleanliness is reached. Flushing is carried out until the target
results are achieved. On board filtration cleans down to NAS 5, ISO 14/11 or better. All results are documented and
traceable to national standards.
Rigs can be hired out with a service engineer. Alternatively we can supply standard flushing rigs for sale or we can build
special flushing units for end of production line flushing of machinery or components.
Machines can be supplied to perform both flushing and pressure testing in one unit
Flushing is ideal for:
any system not running correctly due to contamination
 mobile plant or machines
 machine tools

new plant installations prior to commissioning

any system following a major overhaul

systems with performance problems, wear, sticking valves etc.

Laminar flow normal hydraulic system design will NOT FLUSH a system as a Reynolds number greater than 3000 needs
to be generated. Hydraulic systems are sized to give laminar flow in most conditions.
Turbulent flow with a Reynolds value above 3000 flow becomes turbulent and is therefore ideal for flushing.
Filtertechnik use a hot oil to ensure that viscosity and Reynolds numbers are maintained.

Laminar flow Not effective

Laminar flow is not effective in the flushing process and

results in contaminant and particulate clinging to the
inner-bore

Turbulent flow Totally effective

Turbulent flow is effective in removing

particulate and contaminant from the inner
bore.

FLUSHING
Hot oil Flushing rigs
High flow hot oil flushing unit OTS.200.200.7.ACMU.SS316
This model is driven by two 415V, 15kW, 3ph, 50Hz, IP56 rated electrical motors - mounted to pumps with flow rate of
200 l/min at 35 bar. A third vane pump with circulation flow of 7 l/min at 150 bar is fitted in tandem for pulsation effect up
to 600 l/min. The flushing range of the unit is 1 to 7 depending on fluid viscosity, temperature and pipe length.
Cleanliness levels better than ISO 4406 14/11 or Nas 1638 Class 5 will be achieved. The unit is integrated with a PC9000
particle monitor.
The pulsation is built up in the system through a 10 litre accumulator which is pressurised through the 7 l/min 150 bar
vane pump. The stored volume from the accumulator is then injected into the low pressure flushing circuit in a control time
and cycle mode. This achieves very high turblent flow during the pulsation mode which can be switched on/off manually.
The pulsation is of particular advantage in systems with high differential pressure. The control panel is fitted with on/off
