HUMAN SERVICE SCENARIO ANALYSIS

Human Service Scenario Analysis

This report will pertain to a human services client which differs from my own personal
background. This human service analysis will cover the case scenario, boundary issues, an
effective working relationship between client and therapist. This paper will also express my
personal communication style, non-verbal communication, the needs and cultural sensitivities,
behaviors and supportive techniques which the client can relate to. This report will finalize with
groups relating to the clients story, and recommendations for the client.
Scenario
Today a 16 year old male walks into our youth housing center. He is comes to our
outreach center for guidance and life learning support, his name is Adam Kieneker. He is
currently suffering from grief, depression, substance abuse, and anger management issues.
Adams parents recently passed away and he is lacking the proper guidance in his current living
situation. Adam is seeking residence within our establishment until he becomes an adult in 14
months because he does not want to be in a foster home, his nationality is Japanese American,
and his practicing religion is Buddhism. In the past few months Adam has made some choices
which from lack of proper judgment have resulted in disciplinary actions; he needs to undergo
counseling. Adam will need to complete an interview process in order to have permanent
housing placement within our establishment until he is of legal age to live on this own.
Self-Disclosure or Boundary Issues
As case managers our interest is to learn and understand as much as possible about our
clients. In getting to know Adam I will make sure that our discussions focus on his life and
experiences, giving the least private information about myself as possible. Having open
communication with Adam is important; to be an active listener, hear what he is saying and
feeling while understanding and having consideration about what he is experiencing. By showing

compassion toward his situation allows me to identify with and focus on his goals he wishes to
accomplish while sustaining a professional relationship.
When working with individuals it is important to outline guidelines and regulations in the
beginning. I know that Adams actions have resulted in a plan of action to help him get his anger
management under control. At times he may feel he is not doing anything wrong, but through
proper guidance and setting boundaries for Adam he will understand what to expect from me as
his case manager, and what our establishment expects from him. I believe in creating a
respectable impression between my clients and the agency I work for. Continuing to be
empathetic to his situation will help Adam increase more control over his anger management
issues (Moore, 2006).
Establishing an Effective Working Relationship
According to Murphy & Dillon (2011), role as helping professionals, we are given a
major responsibility: to fulfill the great trust that clients, their families, and society place in us. A
major purpose of our codes of ethics is to protect the welfare of individuals and groups coming
to us for help (pg. 41). The importance of clarification is high; outlining the purpose of the
sessions is significant to his effective progress and to his personal success of getting the anger
issues under control.
It is important to help him understand the urgency of his actions and to teach him
beneficial methods which will help him maintain a calm behavior around others.
When you challenge Adams behavior patterns, his views, and objectives this will help him
identify, understand, and change his incongruous conduct and actions (McGrath, 2002). It is in
the best interest of Adam to establish an effective working relationship, helping him to develop a
short and long term action plan. The professional relationship must efficiently interchange
toward a constructive path in order to enable an active decree each of the short and long term
goals for Adam (Henson, 1997). I will always encourage Adam to ask questions if seems

confused about our discussions. We have an open door policy, and Adam will be made aware he
can ask for assistance anytime he needs it in order to help him achieve his objectives (Van
Cleave, 2007).
My Personal Communication Style
My communication style with Adam will remain calm and neutral to keep a mild manner
session and surroundings for the client. I will not engage with argumentative behavior because it
would only agitate the client and he would not benefit from his anger in any situation. The
environment will be welcoming to the client and warm communications to encourage the client
to talk about his dilemmas. When Adam arrives, I will greet him with a smile and ask him what
he would like to accomplish from his session for today. Throughout the session, I will maintain
eye contact with Adam, actively listen, and offer suggestions so they client can critically think
out possible situations, and come up with his own proper solutions (Oregon Health Authority,
2014).
Non-Verbal Cues
By asking Adam to share his side of what happened enables me to understand some of
what Adam is feeling. If Adam loses eye contact it is possible he is ashamed of his actions, or he
may be lying about the incident. I will watch for any type of anxious behavior such as fidgeting
which teenagers tend to do when they get nervous. I will reassure Adam in a calm manner, there
is no wrong answers here, because this part of his program he is learning how to overcome anger
issues. During the session, I will keep notes of his answers, actions, facial expressions, and
gestures. It is important to keep descriptive notes on the clients behavior and what they are
talking about; non-verbal and verbal emotions are clearly understood when the conversation
changes while the communicating (Murphy & Dillon, 2011).
Communication Needs/Cultural Sensitivities

HUMAN SERVICE SCENARIO ANALYSIS

There is an age difference between Adam and I, as I introduce myself I will let him know
it is alright to call me by my first name if he is comfortable doing so. This will help him open up
and feel safe to talk with me about his issues. I will respect Adams space and ask him if I can
call him by his first name. During our sessions I will let Adam know that there are times that
nicknames can offend others or make others feel that it is unprofessional, or disrespectful; which
could cause issues between people. Adams culture is important to him when it comes to
respecting his elders, and being helpful to those around him, using the word respectful seems to
get through to him when he starts to get angry, it is like a calm moment to gather his thoughts.
Attending Behaviors and Helping Techniques
When working with Adam, throughout our sessions I will incorporate I am sentence
exercises. This method should help him with formulating questions he might never have asked
himself before. This exercise helps individuals to examine and understand their feelings about
others or themselves. This exercise will enable Adam to start a sensible critical thinking process
while intermingling with his peers.
Groups Related to Scenario & Recommendations
Anger management issues are all around us every day. During Adams sessions a
development plan will detail short and long term goals. First through these individual sessions
Adam will go over his plan which includes group and individual counseling sessions. By
attending group sessions it will help him understand how to communicate, and what patterns he
needs to be aware of to help improve his behavior patterns. At a later time, Adam will attend
classes with his peers developing friendships, and associations with ours in calm, engaging in fun
and enjoyable activities. With the right guidance Adam will learn the much needed
responsibilities of becoming an adult and he will prosper in his transition into becoming a
successful adult. I also recommended that Adam takes a few life learning courses here at the

HUMAN SERVICE SCENARIO ANALYSIS

center to help him transition into adulthood. Resources will be gathered and help will be offered
to Adam for pursuing higher education.
