Im very pleased to have this chance to give a

speech of Street Names: Different Stories. Street is a built
environment in our city. We walk on and along the street every day,
but have we noticed that every street has its own name? Without
naming the street, we cant address or even describe the place we
are staying in to our friends. Dale OHara said that everything has a
name. And behind every name there is a story. Streets are included,
and now Im going to tell you different stories of the street names.
They are Sesame Street and Liu XiaoBo plaza.
For celebrating the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street, this wellknown children TV show set a temporary street name in New York
City in 2009, and the name was called Sesame Street. Sesame
Street is a famous children educational TV program that has taught
us numbers and alphabet in our early age since 1969. It brought us
so many sweet child memories that crossed along generations.
Respecting diversity and loving our neighbors has been teaching
through TV shows and video clips by inviting celebrities and using
Muppets in more than 140 countries. Sesame Street became so
successful that reached the goal of being a landmark by naming
Sesame Street in New York City.
During the program Sesame Street, there were some anecdotes
which can certainly made you laugh. Joan Ganz Cooney, the creator
of Sesame Street said that she was not sure if the show can be
successful in the first season and she only had a very limited
budget. 40years has passed and the Muppets said that they stayed
young by not using hair dye and the life lesson they learnt was that
happy people were very near to them. Arent they funny? Did they
recall some of your childhood memories?
On the other hand, the street where the Chinese embassy in
Washington has been voted to change by the America congress
from 3505 International Place to No.1 Liu XiaoBo plaza. The reason
for changing the street name is really simple but really touches the
nerve of China. The legislators said that they wanted to raise the
awareness of human rights in China by using the Noble Peace Prize
winner- Liu XiaoBos name. As we know, Liu XiaoBo is in jail now and
he needs to stay there for 11 years. You may ask why Liu XiaoBo
won the Noble Peace Prize while he is a prison, thats all because of
his action for ending the Chinese Communist Party to control China.
After sharing above street naming stories with you, I think we both
realize that the street name is not only a name, but also a story of a
person, a company or even a country. Some people may name a
street for remembrance. Some may name a street for showing the
values just like democracy and aiming at political ideal. In my
opinion, Street naming is just a kind of tool to bind the world
together and tell the world the value that the country cares about.

Some of the street names may cause controversy, yet it shows that
the world is full of differences and the street name can still lead us
to the target location. Street naming can teach us the importance of
respecting differences and give a place an identity. We both make a
consensus and learn from the history by knowing the different
stories of the street name.
